EFL Cup final tickets sold out

Show/hide article…

Saints are heading to the iconic ground on Sunday 26th February for the clash with Manchester United, as they seek a first major trophy since 1976.

Claude Puel’s side will have a huge following for the match, with the club’s supporters set to pack out the West End of Wembley.

It will be Saints’ first trip to the stadium since the 2010 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, when they beat Carlisle United 4-1.

Southampton Football Club would like to once again thank our supporters for their tremendous backing, and we look forward to seeing so many of you at Wembley Stadium.

Doswell: My Sutton United are the Saints of non-league

Show/hide article…

SUTTON United boss Paul Doswell reckons the FA Cup giantkillers are non-league’s answer to Saints.

Doswell, a season-ticket holder in the Itchen Stand, is preparing for the biggest week of his footballing life.

It will begin with Sutton’s televised FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Arsenal this Monday - and end with a trip to Wembley to watch his beloved Saints take on Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.

Arsenal’s visit to Gander Green Lane is the tie of this year’s FA Cup.

But Doswell’s preference would have been for Saints, who lost 5-0 at home to the Gunners in round four.

“I had a lovely text from [Saints director of football] Les Reed after we got the draw - he said he was just sorry they couldn’t have done better against Arsenal!” laughed the former Eastleigh boss, who has managed Sutton for nine years.

“I’ve sort of modelled us a little bit on what Southampton have done,” he continued.

“Bringing young players in, improving them and then letting them move on is not a lot different to what Southampton have done.

“Our budget in the National League probably sits with what Southampton have got in the Premier League.”

Doswell, who manages his £10,000-a-week Sutton squad for free, credits Saints for helping to develop his coaching skills.

“I was very fortunate that when Alan Pardew was manager, the club asked me to help get him a house,” explains the Compton-based property developer.

“He invited me into his training sessions and I picked up loads and loads. He’s a superb coach.”

Pardew will be a guest of Doswell’s at Gander Green Lane on Monday, along with Lawrie McMenemy and Matt Le Tissier.

Whatever the result on Monday, Doswell’s family will end the week with another memorable footballing occasion as Saints prepare to take on Manchester United.

“There’ll be 30 of us - all season-ticket holders, going up by train from Winchester hoping someone will do a Bobby Stokes!”

Doswell will present under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a £300 bottle of red wine, hand-picked by his brother, when the two teams meet on Monday night.

But he has warned the Gunners to prepare for lukewarm showers.

“I thought about putting new shower heads in - for about two seconds,” he smiled. “We haven’t done it for any other teams, but it’s not us being trying be big and clever - it’s because we can’t afford it.”

Don’t miss this week’s Sports Pink for a big interview with Totton-based Sutton Utd cult hero Wayne Shaw

Martin Caceres: Southampton sign ex-Juventus and Barcelona defender

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed former Juventus and Barcelona defender Martin Caceres until the end of the season.

The free agent, who has 68 caps for Uruguay, left Serie A giants Juventus in the summer.

“I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football,” said the 29-year-old, who has not played a game for over a year.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton.”

Caceres also played for Spanish clubs Barcelona and Sevilla, winning La Liga and the Champions League during his time at the Nou Camp.

He made 77 appearances for Italian champions Juve across three spells, winning the Serie A title four times.

However, he has not made a competitive appearance since last February after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon.

He will provide cover for Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who was ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury.

Done Deal: Southampton sign ex-Juventus and Barcelona man Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

Caceres, who was a free agent after leaving Juventus last summer, will bolster Saints’ defensive ranks. The South Coast club sold captain Jose Fonte to West Ham in January and have lost star man Virgil van Dijk to injury. Caceres could make his debut for Southampton in their next match - the EFL Cup final clash with Manchester United at Wembley on February 26.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton” “I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football," he said. "I am looking forward to getting started with my new team-mates. “Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton.

"I am extremely happy to have joined this club.” The Uruguayan international has 68 caps to his name and has turned out for Spanish clubs Barcelona and Sevilla. He won La Liga and the Champions League while at the Nou Camp, and Saints director of football Les Reed is delighted with the signing.

“Recruiting players in January is an extremely difficult task, and this year was a particularly challenging market for centre-backs," he said. “We set out to recruit a high-calibre player in that position during the January window so I am delighted that, following extensive work and persistence, we have now been able to sign Martin Caceres on a short-term contract. “Martin is a great talent, who has played at the very top level and won many trophies and medals. He is a very experienced international player for Uruguay and has enjoyed notable success with both Juventus and Barcelona.

Southampton sign Martin Caceres until end of the season

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed former Juventus and Barcelona defender Martin Caceres on a deal until the end of the season.

Free agent Caceres was able to join Saints outside of the January transfer window after leaving Juventus at the end of last season.

Southampton boss Claude Puel has been keen to sign defensive cover following a long-term injury to Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk and the sale of Jose Fonte to West Ham.

Caceres, who has represented Uruguay on 68 occasions, is relishing the opportunity to get started at his new club ahead of the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

“I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football,” the 29-year-old said. "I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

Les Reed, Southampton’s Executive Director of Football, believes the Uruguayan is a “high-calibre” addition to Puel’s squad.

“Recruiting players in January is an extremely difficult task, and this year was a particularly challenging market for centre-backs,” Reed said.

"We set out to recruit a high-calibre player in that position during the January window so I am delighted that, following extensive work and persistence, we have now been able to sign Martin Caceres on a short-term contract.

"Martin is a great talent, who has played at the very top level and won many trophies and medals. He is a very experienced international player for Uruguay and has enjoyed notable success with both Juventus and Barcelona.

"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he will bring experience, talent and character. He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.

“Two days of extensive medicals and tough fitness tests have further demonstrated his desire and positive personality. I know Martin can’t wait to start playing again. We welcome him to St Mary’s, and his family into our family.”
