Saints are still expecting to complete the signing of Martin Caceres - and hope he will be ready to join Claude Puel’s squad for their pre-Wembley trip to Spain.
The 29-year-old centre half is committed to a move to St Mary’s, with the club confident the deal for the free agent is watertight amid reported interest from Barcelona.
Caceres has had to travel back home to Uruguay after the sudden death of his brother at the weekend.
He was in Italy when he got the news, having had to return there while he waited for a work permit which would allow the formalities of his Saints deal to be completed.
The club had been hoping to confirm his signing at the beginning of this week, but are allowing Caceres time to grieve with his family and refusing to put any pressure on him to move to England at such a difficult time.
Claude Puel has given his squad four days off after the win at Sunderland anyway, which gives extra breathing space in terms of the build-up to Wembley.
The players will reconvene at Staplewood tomorrow for training and a round of media commitments ahead of the League Cup final before heading to Spain on Friday for a few days of intensive training, and it is hoped that Caceres will be in place by then.
Puel has double training sessions planned for each day of the trip as he looks to get his squad into the perfect physical and mental condition to take on Manchester United.
How Caceres fares on the Spain trip will likely decide whether he will be considered for a starting berth at Wembley.
Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida performed admirably in the convincing win over Sunderland and have earned the right in many people’s eyes for the way they played against Liverpool in the semi-final.
However, Caceres, though not having played for more than a year, has considerable qualities and experience, having starred for the likes of Juventus and Barcelona in his career and also having collected a winner’s medal from several major finals.
His presence will come as a welcome boost, even if he doesn’t figure in the final and is therefore around only for the remainder of the Premier League campaign, as the club seek to temporarily replace the injured Virgil van Dijk, who has been their leader on the pitch this season.
A CYCLIST who was left in a critical condition after a collision with a car driven by Saints’ star Charlie Austin has spoken about losing his memory and how the crash has changed his life forever.
Anthony Grey, from Southampton suffered injuries to his head, neck and toes and underwent a five hour operation to insert a metal plate in his damaged spine so he would be able to walk again after he was hit by the footballer’s Bentley.
He says he cannot remember anything about the incident and was desperate to meet the millionaire star and “get some closure” about what happened.
Mr Austin’s Bentley collided with Anthony, who was riding without a helmet, across the traffic lights at the junction of New Road, East Park Terrace and Palmerston Road in Southampton.
Father-of-one Anthony, who lives in the city centre, was issued with a fixed penalty notice for riding through a traffic light on the bicycle, which he bought the day before the incident. Anthony said he had not ridden a bike for years although he had driven a motorcycle.
Charlie Austin voluntarily attended an interview under caution and admitted driving without due care and attention. He now has the option of attending a driver awareness course or court.
“I don’t remember much until the day after. The worst is not knowing,” Anthony said.
“I have what the police said and nothing more. In my head I need to understand what happened and figure it out and the only one who can help me is Charlie Austin.”
Friends have told 37-year-old Anthony, who volunteers for the Hampshire-based charity Naomi House Children’s Hospice, that he had left work and gone home to collect some things before hopping on his bike to go to a friend’s house in Shirley.
“The last thing I remember is leaving work at 4.30pm and the incident was at 5.30pm,” he said.
“I remember coming around and a police officer giving me my rucksack cut in half.
“It was excruciating. I could not move my legs or my upper body at all.
"I had to wear a neck collar and body brace.
“The surgeons have fixed it though and have done an incredible job…I should be in a wheelchair but I am not.”
Anthony had been told that the Saints star got out of his car and helped him while emergency services were on their way.
“I would like to thank him if nothing else,” he said. “I just want to understand how it all happened. I know where I was going and doing but something went horribly wrong.”
Anthony said he would never ride a bicycle again.
“It is just not safe to cycle in Southampton. Cyclists don’t belong on the path with pedestrians and they don’t belong on the roads where everything is just moving too fast.
“Some cyclist just don’t pay respect to the road…I have aways said people should wear safely gear and if they do something wrong while cycling on the road they could be held accountable - police gave me a ticket for running an amber light - this maybe why I was hit I don’t know.
"I don’t blame anyone… We were both there and we both made a mistake.”
Anthony said he still suffered knee and elbow pain although but he was just happy to be alive.
“It has changed my life but I have made it a positive. What choice do I have?
“It has given me a new outlook on life – I feel like I have been given a second chance – although I don’t know if I deserve it.”
Following October’s accident Mr Austin was reported as saying: “I was driving in the city centre of Southampton and had stopped at traffic lights at a junction.
“I moved forward when the lights turned green and it was at that point that a cyclist unexpectedly came across my path and a collision occurred.
“Following a police investigation of the accident, I provided a statement to the Hampshire Constabulary in early 2017 to give them my version of events.”
After the Daily Echo contacted Southampton Football Club, a spokesman said it was to their understanding that contact had been made between both parties.
He added, given it was a personal situation that Charlie had commented on through a statement reported in the national press and that both parties were co-operating with the police, it would be inappropriate to become involved and comment.
The striker, who has scored nine goals this season, and was signed by Saints in January last year for a reported £4 million from Queens Park Rangers.
His career at St Mary’s has been dogged by injury and he is currently on the sidelines since early December due to a shoulder injury and is not due back before April.

Oriol Romeu says he wants to continue to repay the fans for their support after scooping his third Under Armour Player of the Month award for his January performances.
Romeu edged out Cédric, Shane Long and Maya Yoshida to in the fans’ poll in a month where Saints reached the EFL Cup final.
“I’m really happy because the fans recognise the work of the pitch and it’s something that’s very nice to have,” said Romeu upon receiving his trophy.
“In that month we get into the final and the semi-final against Liverpool was amazing for all of us.
“It was a great experience. The second leg at Anfield was something we always dreamed of. It couldn’t have been any better and now we want to finish that work off.”
After a month that also saw him put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half year deal, Romeu paid tribute to the support he has received.
“It’s very nice to have that support from them and I’m feeling happy here. Having that support from them is amazing and every time I play I really enjoy it,” Romeu said.
“I want to keep having that feeling but I need to keep working so I don’t lose it.
“It’s amazing the way they’ve treated me since I came here and I want to give that love back.”
WHICH Premier League players have truly mastered the art of penalties?
While the likes of Matt Le Tissier and Leighton Baines have been revered for their skills from 12 yards, neither of them make this countdown as they did miss spot-kicks during their Premier League careers.
A Manchester City fans’ favourite tops the list of players to take at least five and score every time, with a Manchester United cult hero close behind.

Gabbiadini has now scored three goals in two games since arriving from Napoli in January.
Indeed, he is the first player to score in his first two Premier League games for Saints since Henri Camara in 2005.
Davis said: “He’s got a lot of quality. After his goal last week when it was a half chance if anything and he stuck it in the top bin and today as well he’s turned on a sixpence and scored as well so he’s got a lot of quality, you can see that.
“His movement is really good and he offers us a good attacking outlet and gives us good competition for places with Longy coming on and scoring and Jay-Rod as well.
“Every goalscorer thrives off scoring goals and nice to see both of them on the score sheet again. There is good competition for places up there, we are well-stocked in that area.”
And despite still adapting to the English game and a new language, the Italian international has taken to things seamlessly, something which Davis feels bodes well for the future.
“He obviously feels confortable out on the training pitch that’s what he is here to do and at the minute he is finding it difficult to communicate because we don’t really have any Italian speakers and he doesn’t speak English so, we’ve got a masseur who is Italian.
“He can translate a bit for him. He seems to have settled in well judging by his performances on the pitch so delighted for him.
“Football is universal anyway. Obviously communication at times helps but as a goal scorer to get off the mark in your first two games, he’s obviously settled in well.”

HE is the one Manchester United who would like nothing more than to play against Saints in the League Cup final.
But, United’s Staplewood academy graduate Luke Shaw is unlikely to face his former club at Wembley, having been ignored and criticised by Jose Mourinho for the majority of this term.
The 21-year-old left-back, who moved to Old Trafford for £30m in 2014, has struggled to make an impression on his comeback season following a horrific double leg break.
Niggling issues have played a part in him falling down the pecking order under Mourinho, but the United manager says there is no problem with the England international.
“He has to work and wait,” Mourinho said. "On Saturday I wanted one defender on the bench and the defender is someone who can play in more than one position.
"(Matteo) Darmian can play left-back, right-back and an emergency central defender for us so my choice was Darmian.
"The only thing I can say is that Luke is working well. He doesn’t have any problem and is working well.
“He is fighting hard. There is no problem with him. He is fighting hard.”
Shaw has made just six Premier League starts this season, with more game time coming in the Europa League and domestic cups.
He appeared in the quarter-final League Cup win over West Ham as well as the last 16 triumph against rivals Manchester City.
However, the former St Mary’s star was left out completely of the squad in the first leg semi-final win over Hull City, and was an unused substitute in the second leg.
And Mourinho seems unlikely to deploy the youngster against the the club where his professional career blossomed at Wembley later this month.
Shaw started regularly for United at the beginning of the season, playing the full match as United defeated Saints 2-0 at Old Trafford in August.
However, he fell out of favour with Mourinho, with the Portuguese boss criticising the defender.
The 54-year-old has previously questioned Shaw after the 3-1 defeat at Watford in September, when the Old Trafford chief insisted the left-back was out of position for one the goals United conceded.
The Portuguese then took another swipe at Shaw, questioning his willingness to play through the pain barrier.

Sam Gallagher suffered a knee injury and was substituted in the first half of Blackburn Rovers’ 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.
Gallagher left the pitch on a stretcher following a collision with Owls midfielder Sam Hutchinson after 37 minutes of play at Hillsbrough.
Blackburn boss Owen Coyle revealed after the match that the 21-year-old needed 12 stitches to a deep cut above Gallagher’s knee as they await further news on the severity of the injury.
Gallagher left the play after Rovers had made it 1-1, but they fell behind just before half time and were unable to recover, although Hope Akpan had a goal disallowed for the visitors. His protest at the match official led to a red card late on, with defeat keeping Blackburn in the Championship’s bottom three.
Following a heavy defeat over the weekend, Jason McCarthy helped Walsall to an impressive point away at promotion chasing Scunthorpe United in League 1.
McCarthy, who was named as the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for January, played the full 90 minutes as the Saddlers kept out the division’s second highest scorers.
Playing at right back, McCarthy set up a chance for Simeon Jackson in the first half which was saved, but the shut out ensured that Walsall remain in 12th place, level on points with Oxford United.
In Spain, Paulo Gazzaniga’s Rayo Vallecano had no midweek game following their defeat at Mallorca over the weekend. They are next in action on Sunday when they host Mirandés in the Segunda División.
