Puel looks ahead to Wembley

Show/hide article…

Saints’ final game before their Wembley showdown with Manchester United saw them thrash Sunderland 4-0, at the Stadium of Light.

Puel has rewarded his squad with the next couple of days off, before they head back to Staplewood Campus to crank up their preparations for the final in two weeks’ time.

“We can prepare now for the next game with calm and quality,” he said. "For the moment, we will take four days off.

"It is a good reward for all the squad, because we played since the beginning of the season every three days. This is the first time we can have four days off and we can appreciate this.

"Of course, it’s easier to prepare for the final with a good result, with good spirit, with calm and a good attitude.

"It was very important to win this game, but it’s just one game and it will be important to build on this.

"Now we have got to prepare for the final. It’s an exciting game of course, but we are not favourites – that is Manchester United.

“We just have to focus on our play, try to play good football with our spirit, and we will see. In football, and we saw this against Liverpool, all is possible.”

Puel: Tadić’s best of the season

Show/hide article…

Tadić, who was operating in the number ten role, was a constant threat at the Stadium of Light, grabbing one assist, as Saints demolished the Black Cats 4-0.

Puel was delighted with the efforts of the Serbia international, believing it was his finest display of the campaign so far.

“It was a good performance,” he said. "I think it was his best game since the beginning of the season.

"I think right or left, he didn’t give all this possibility, because with the line he stopped the ball without taking the space. I prefer when he can turn and give good assists – good acceleration and good penetration also.

“It’s important he can repeat this performance, because all this gives quality to the squad.”

Saints to head abroad for Wembley preparation

Show/hide article…

Saints will head abroad for a warm weather training camp to prepare for the League Cup final against Manchester United.

Saints have two weeks without a game before the Wembley showpiece following their 4-0 hammering of Sunderland.

Claude Puel has ordered his squad to have four days off to rest and recover with their families before they return to Staplewood in the middle of the week to begin the build-up for Wembley.

Saints will utilise their upcoming fixture free weekend by taking the squad away to Spain for a few days of intensive training as they focus all their efforts on to beating United to win what would be only the club’s second major piece of silverware.

Puel said: “We are going to take first of all these days off we deserve and after we got to make a training camp together to prepare this game and to find good condition also with calm and quality.

“We get to prepare this game and we know it’s a fantastic and exciting game.

“We are not the favourite of course but we know in football all is possible and we see this against Liverpool.

“To win with this result and four goals and with a clean sheet is very good for the confidence and good preparation also for this game.”

Saints will wrap up all media commitments for their players before they head abroad so the squad have more than a week to stay focussed together as a group without any further distractions.

Only Puel himself will face the press in the days leading up to the final, as Saints try to do all they can to give themselves the best chance of victory.

While Saints have time to prepare properly, United have three games before the final, including a Europa League trip to Saint-Etienne just a few days prior to the game.

For Puel the most important thing is to head to Wembley with confidence after the Sunderland victory.

“Sometimes it’s great of course. It was a fantastic game, a good game for my squad,” he smiled.

“It was a difficult game to come here away against this team with confidence with their last results and it would be difficult but with the spirit and attitude and the good concentration we can do a good game.

“It was difficult at the start of the game with the pressure with this team with free kicks and it was important to resist.

“After we do strong work together to defend and attack and to make quality on our play which was important.

“The two centre of the defence and the offensive give the good solution and to work together.

“This is a fantastic game and with all this games lost before it was very important to react and to give a good answer and I hope it is the first game of a good cycle of course.

“It was important to win this game with a fantastic performance and now just to take four days off holidays with their family because we deserve this with all these games without a possibility to recover and after we go to prepare the next game which is a little game.”

Jaidi: Swansea will be a different but difficult challenge

Show/hide article…

The Swans, who top the Premier League 2 Division 2 table, will travel to Staplewood for the tie, having suffered defeat in the reverse fixture.

“We played Swansea before and won 1-0,” started Jaïdi.

“But we know they will be a physical side - we are also expecting some clever movement from the midfielders who are quality and technical players.

“They are a team that are leading their league, so they will confident and used to winning. It will be a different but difficult challenge for our boys.”

Saints currently lead their Premier League Cup group, and Jaïdi is aware of the impact a victory over Swansea would have on his side’s chances to progress.

“We are top of this group with three games to go,” he continued.

“So starting Monday we want to take it step by step, pass this game and win it and then look forward to the final two.

“It’s an important competition for our younger boys and provides more good experience, so why not go as far as we possibly can.”

Sunderland manager David Moyes defends New York bonding trip

Show/hide article…

David Moyes and his Sunderland players will head to New York with their Premier League fightback having come to an abrupt halt against Southampton.

Moyes hopes to foster a new team spirit during a four-day bonding trip to set up his squad for a run-in that will determine which division the club plays its football in next season.

Having seen Sunderland win 4-0 at Crystal Palace, Moyes witnessed a horror show at the Stadium of Light on Saturday as EFL Cup finalists Southampton won by the same score.

But the manager said the defeat would not alter his focus for what he wants to achieve in New York.

He added: “We have got some time together. Look, a lot of teams who are out of the FA Cup are doing different things and we are doing something as well.”

The Sunderland squad will take in basketball and ice hockey games as well as visiting Ground Zero during their time away.

Moyes hopes the exercise will further integrate new arrivals Joleon Lescott, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo into the squad and foster a togetherness for the battles ahead.

Speaking about the Southampton game, he said: "Ultimately what you see is the result, and the result was bad.

“But every time we put on a more attacking player it got worse, so for us trying to win the game or do something, it didn’t necessarily make us any better.”

Clean sheet delights Stephens

Show/hide article…

Saints recorded a clean sheet, and scored four goals at the other end, to seal an impressive three points against the Black Cats, who had won by the same scoreline at Crystal Palace a week previous.

Stephens partnered Maya Yoshida at the heart of the defence for the third Premier League game in a row, and was delighted with the shutout.

“That was the aim for Maya and I,” the central defender told southamptonfc.com after Saturday’s game at the Stadium of Light.

“We said before the game that we needed the clean sheet and the whole team played their part in us getting it.

“From the front players right through to Fraser, it was a massive performance from the boys.

“A clean sheet and four goals away from home – there’s not much more you can ask for really.”

At the other end, Manolo Gabbiadini netted twice to take his tally to three goals in two games for Saints, and Stephens was full of praise for the striker.

“It’s been a great start for him and hopefully he will carry on that form,” he added.

“You can’t argue with what he has done so far.

“The second goal came at a really good time, just before the break. I would imagine it really put Sunderland on the back foot.

“The timing more than anything was important, but it was a fantastic goal.”

Gab’s double fires Saints to victory

Show/hide article…

The Italian followed up his debut goal against West Ham last week by striking twice in the first half at the Stadium of Light to lead Saints past the Black Cats, with Jason Denayer’s late own goal and Shane Long’s cool finish in added time adding extra emphasis to the scoreline.

Claude Puel’s side, who had lost six of their previous seven Premier League matches, were excellent value their comfortable win, dominating proceedings in the north east throughout the afternoon.

It marked an ideal result for Saints not just in terms of getting back on track in the top-flight, but also ahead of the showdown with Manchester United, at Wembley Stadium, two weeks tomorrow.

Puel made two changes from the side that lost 3-1 at home to West Ham last time out, as Nathan Redmond and Dušan Tadić returned in place of Jay Rodriguez, who dropped to the bench, and the injured Sofiane Boufal.

Sunderland had the better of the opening stages, without ever seriously threatening.

A misplaced defensive header from Ryan Bertrand provided an opening for Adnan Januzaj on the edge of the box after six minutes, but the Saints defender recovered excellently to block the resulting shot.

Another chance arrived for the Black Cats soon after, as Nathan Redmond fouled Didier Ndong 25 yards out, but Seb Larsson’s free-kick was fired straight into the wall.

Even when Sunderland picked out top scorer Jermain Defoe, via Adnan Januzaj down the inside left, he could only divert the ball wide of the near post.

Saints eventually began to grow into the game, and some good pressing high up the pitch from James Ward-Prowse in the 19th minute saw the ball fall to Gabbiadini in space, just inside the area, but his left-footed snapshot was dragged well wide.

Gabbiadini again provided a threat soon after, as he latched onto a Tadić through ball, turned and picked out Cédric 18 yards out, but he fired his shot well over.

The breakthrough did arrive on the half-hour mark, though, and it was little surprise that it did so through Gabbiadini, who made it two goals in two games for his new club.

It owed plenty to Bertrand, though, as his wicked cross from the left just eluded the diving Lamine Koné, before hitting Gabbiadini and flying past Mannone at the near post.

If that wasn’t already good enough, Gabbiadini then struck again just as the clock ticked onto 45 minutes.

A beautiful piece of play down the right ended with Tadić sliding a pass into the striker, and he completely dumbfounded Koné with a superb turn, before firing a low, right-footed shot past Mannone to send Saints into the interval leading 2-0.

Within three minutes of the restart, the Italian had almost completed his hat-trick, but his left-footed strike from James Ward-Prowse’s in-swinging corner was saved by Mannone.

Saints continued to poke and prod, with Tadić having a low shot well blocked by Koné, before his well-struck shot was turned away by the diving Mannone shortly after the hour mark.

At the other end, Forster was finally tested, as Didier Ndong sent in a low shot from 25 yards in the 66th minute, but the Saints keeper got behind it well and held on.

Back up the pitch Saints went, and they were a whisker away from making it 3-0 when Ward-Prowse teed up a shot from 25 yards and sent it whistling just past the top corner, with Mannone beaten, while the midfielder headed inches wide just moments later.

There would be no hat-trick for Gabbiadini, as he was withdrawn to a standing ovation from the away fans, being replaced by Long in the 73rd minute.

He came close to an immediate impact, meeting Cédric’s right-wing cross and looping a header towards goal, only for Mannone to reach up and tip it over the bar.

The Black Cats keeper kept the score down again ten minutes from time, as he saved from Redmond, before Saints made their second change of the day, swapping the superb Tadić for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

With three minutes left, the visitors added some additional emphasis to the scoreline, as Redmond set Bertrand away down the left and his low ball was diverted in by Sunderland’s Denayer for an own goal to make it 3-0.

And it was 4-0 in added time, as Bertrand picked out Long through the middle, and he exchanged passes with Ward-Prowse, before slotting calmly past Mannone into the bottom corner.
