Rafael Benitez has told Newcastle to approach each of their remaining nine games as cup finals as they attempt to secure their Premier League status.
The 16th-placed Magpies face Southampton , who are just one place and a single point worse off, at St James’ Park on Saturday knowing victory could prove invaluable to their cause.
However, Benitez is refusing to pile any more pressure than necessary upon his players as they head into a fixture which could have a significant say in their fate.
He said: "Every game is important. This is the most important because it is the next one, but we have to keep going to the end.
"We will be trying to win, but we will be doing that until the last one. Every game is a final for us now.
“Every game against a team that is close to us, I am sure people will say it is a six-point game, but we just have to do our best to get the points and then see where we are in the table. There are still a lot of games to play.”
Southampton’s improvement over the last two months will mean nothing if they fail to secure Premier League safety in their nine remaining games, manager Mauricio Pellegrino has said.
Saints have won just five league matches this season and sit in 17th position, one point above the bottom three.
“Thinking about the next nine games, every single game will be massive,” Pellegrino said. "Because we have to try and do our job as soon as possible, and I think we are ready to compete.
“It is difficult now to say… ‘OK, we are getting better’ because, since January, obviously I think the team lift performance, but now we need to get results - it is reality.”

Rafa Benitez’s side claimed a vital win to climb away from the bottom three, but Saints are heading for trouble.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men has just one win in 17 league games and were outplayed at St James’s Park.
It took Newcastle just 63 seconds to go ahead with a brilliant direct attack.
Jonjo Shelvey, recalled after injury, flipped a great high ball to the edge of the box.
On loan Chelsea star Kenedy took it on his chest and spun in one movement around Cedric Soares.
Kenedy then guided his shot past Alex McCarthy to relieve the pressure.
United were two up by the 28th minute thanks to a wonderful breakaway goal.
Mario Lemina slipped and failed to connect with a shot 18 yards out, and Ayoze Perez raced 60 yards with the ball and slipped it to Dwight Gayle.
The striker sensed Kenedy free on the far post and unselfishly passed rather than shooting, to present the Brazilian with his second of the game.
A week ago Newcastle threw away a two goal lead at Bournemouth after sitting back too deep.
Southampton threw men forward to chase the game after the break leaving the home side to find space in attack.
The third goal came after 55 minutes, when Shelvey toyed with the hapless Saints back four shaping to shoot three times before slipping to Matt Ritchie.
The Scotland international broke his duck for the season recently against Man U, and passed the ball calmly into the net from 18 yards to seal the points.
