Jaïdi: Keep the momentum going

Show/hide article…

Jaïdi’s side, who are now four matches without defeat and have only lost one of their last seven across all competitions, host Norwich City in Premier League 2 on Monday night, ahead of a Premier League Cup last-16 tie with Leicester on Friday.

Having earned a 1-1 draw last week away to Brighton Under-23s, who fielded the likes of Leonardo Ulloa, Beram Kayal and Tim Krul in their starting line-up, Jaïdi explained that confidence is high ahead of another big few days.

“I think we need to carry on this unbeaten period,” said Jaïdi, whose team would leapfrog seventh-placed Norwich in the table with a win.

“We’re playing at home and I said to the boys a draw was good at Brighton, but now we’re playing at home and three points will be a massive objective for us.”

Jaïdi added: “I want us to continue and carry on the hard work and commitment to improve in the rest of the games.”

Reflecting on the hard-fought point earned last week, Jaïdi said: "We faced an experienced team up in Brighton and the boys responded really well to it.

“We stood up to the challenge, as I said after the game. It’s good to keep the confidence up and carry on what we’ve been doing the last couple of weeks, and hopefully we’ll improve and get ourselves more wins.”

Pellegrino believes he can still save Saints

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino still believes he can lead Saints to Premier League survival.

Pellegrino’s side slumped to an awful 3-0 defeat to Newcastle to leave themselves in deep trouble with eight games to go.

Saints don’t play in the league again until the end of the month, with the FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan to come before an international break.

It gives Saints just a little breathing space to try and get things right after a truly horrific performance at St James’ Park. And Pellegrino is adamant that he can revive the attitude of the players and keep them up.

“I am part of the context,” confessed Pellegrino.

“This is the bad face of sport.

“In one side there are winners and the other side there are losers and the loser looks worse than we are.

“Everybody looks we don’t have capacity to play at this level but this is part of our life.

“In the next weekend we have got another opportunity to try to move forward in the FA Cup and still this club and this group of players are in a position that still we are alive.

“We have eight games to go and I think we have a lot of things to show and I think we will do it.

“Overall we have to change, we have to switch on our spirit and compete much better.”

As well as a dreadful result, the defeat at Newcastle called into serious question the spirit and character of the players.

Pellegrino wasn’t pulling any punches after the match and when he asked whether he felt that the players had simply given up, he replied: “Yes, and for me to be honest this for me is the main thing to organise the team, to create the team. The spirit of the team and the attitude of the team is everything.

“We have been talking about this a lot of time from the beginning.

“You can have good players, you can have budget, but without spirit and personality is really difficult to compete.

“This is the minimum that we have to show. If not it will not be easier.

“At this level we have to cope with a different attitude.”

However, Pellegrino wasn’t totally without hope for the future, and is still confident Saints will turn it all around.

“My players realise quickly what they did,” he said.

“They know. They are intelligent.

“Sometimes this is a feeling that we can change overall with our behaviour and not with our talking.”

Spirit key to Southampton’s top-flight survival - Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Spirit and aggression are vital for Southampton’s hopes of turning their fortunes around and avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season, manager Mauricio Pellegrino said.

Southampton, who secured an eighth-placed league finish last season, have won just five of their 30 matches this campaign to sit a point and a place above the relegation zone after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Pellegrino believes that the poor result at St. James’ Park was a reflection of his team’s hopelessness and has urged his players to not give up with eight league games remaining in the season.

“The spirit of the team and the attitude of the team is everything,” Pellegrino said. “You can have good players, you can have budget, but without spirit and personality (it) is really difficult to compete.

“This is the minimum that we have to show. If not it will not be easier.

“At this level we have to cope with a different attitude.”

Southampton, who are winless in their last four league games, will be hoping to get a morale-boosting win when they meet League One (third tier) side Wigan Athletic in their FA Cup quarter-final tie next Sunday.

“In the next weekend we have got another opportunity to try to move forward in the FA Cup and still this club and this group of players are in a position that still we are alive,” Pellegrino is quoted as saying in the Daily Echo.

“We have eight (league) games to go and I think we have a lot of things to show and I think we will do it. Overall we have to change, we have to switch on our spirit and compete much better.”

If second-bottom Stoke City pull off an unlikely upset over league leaders Manchester City on Monday, Southampton will drop into the bottom three ahead of a crucial fixture against 16th-placed West Ham United on March 31.

Mesut Ozil brings up 50 Premier League assists in record time

Show/hide article…

Mesut Ozil became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 assists during Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Watford on Super Sunday, bringing up the milestone on his 141st appearance for the Gunners.

The playmaker hit the half-century in the eighth minute of the Emirates Stadium encounter, with his looping free-kick headed home by Shkodran Mustafi for Arsenal’s 1,000th home goal of the Premier League era.

Ozil beat the assists record previously held by Eric Cantona, who made it to 50 in 143 appearances for Leeds and Manchester United during the 1990s.

In total, 35 players have reached the milestone. Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp was the third-quickest, achieving the feat in his 146th appearance, with Cesc Fabregas (165 appearances) and David Silva (166) making up the rest of the top five.

Manchester United’s Ashley Young (192) is the only other current player in the top 10, behind David Beckham (170), Thierry Henry (174) and Nolberto Solano (178) and ahead of former Liverpool man Steve McManaman (197).

Ozil’s assist was his eighth of the season in the Premier League and came just a few days after he set up both goals in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at the San Siro.

“He’s a quality footballer,” said Jamie Redknapp in the Sky Sports studio.

"When the ball is at his feet you never know what’s going to happen, but you always know he can find the right pass.

“When he gets on it and you give him a little bit of time to play, he can manoeuvre the ball so well.”

Ozil did not add any more assists to his tally against Watford but it did not matter. Henrikh Mkhitaryan set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Arsenal’s second, with Petr Cech saving Troy Deeney’s penalty before the former Borussia Dortmund pair combined again for Arsenal’s third.

Ozil will be aiming to assist the Gunners again when they welcome AC Milan to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

Bednarek in Poland U21 squad

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old centre-half will link up with his international teammates after next Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final away to Wigan, ahead of the game on Tuesday 27th March.

Poland will host Group 3’s bottom-placed side in Lublin, as they look to keep up the pressure on leaders Denmark, who are currently one point and one place ahead of them at the halfway stage.

Each group winner will advance automatically to the 2019 finals, with the four best runners-up from the nine qualifying groups going into the play-offs.
