LONDON The Premier League has given Lander Sports owner Gao Jisheng clearance to take over Southampton’s holding company, the Chinese stadium builder said on Friday.

“The company’s owner Mr Gao Jisheng has confirmed that he has obtained a verbal approval from the English Premier League to acquire an 80 percent stake in St Mary’s Football Group Ltd,” Lander said in a statement to the Shenzhen stock exchange.

It added that Gao had yet to receive approval documents.

British media reports have indicated the takeover would cost 190 million pounds.

Lander announced in April it was terminating plans to buy a stake in Southampton after earlier striking a deal with Saints’ owner Katharina Liebherr. It said on Friday that it was not directly involved in the takeover.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Virgil van Dijk branded ‘embarrassing’ by former star

Show/hide article…

John Arne Riise has branded Liverpool’s failed pursuit of Virgil van Dijk and subsequent apology to Southampton as “embarrassing”.

The Reds were forced to offer Saints a dramatic public apology after the south coast side reported them to the Premier League for tapping up, as reported in the Liverpool Echo .

Jurgen Klopp was also made by club bosses to drop his interest in the centre back after the boss had hoped to make a club record deal to sign the Dutchman.

And Riise has been unimpressed with how the events have unfolded and blasted his former club in a Twitter Q&A with fans.

Asked about how the situation, Riise simply tweeted: “Embarrassing”.

Riise was answering questions from fans on Twitter in a quick-fire Q&A session, and also claimed Sturridge should depart Anfield in search of regular game time.

“Think it’s best for him to go where he can play regularly” he responded when asked about the striker’s situation.

The Norwegian won the FA Cup, League Cup and the Champions League during his seven-year stay at Anfield and explained his biggest regret during his time with the Reds was leaving in 2008.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the former left-back revealed his greatest moment as a Liverpool player to be the 2005 Champions League win and said his most cherished goals were those against Manchester United and Everton.

Here’s how Riise responded to fans across Twitter on Friday afternoon…

What positions do LFC need this summer? “Centre-back, striker, left-back”.

Best friend at LFC? “Been lucky. But Hyypia was important for me”.

Best goalkeeper you played with? “Pepe Reina”.

Favourite goal ever scored? " Favorite against Man U, best for Monaco against Bordeaux".

Cédric features for Portugal in Latvia win

Show/hide article…

Cédric played 71 minutes for Portugal as they recorded a 3-0 victory over Latvia in World Cup qualifying.

It took the visitors 41 minutes to break the deadlock, when Cristiano Ronaldo headed home from close range.

And Ronaldo doubled the advantage just after the hour mark with another headed effort, before teeing up Andre Gomes for a decisive third.

The full-back was replaced by Benfica’s Nélson Semedo with 19 minutes left on the clock, as Portugal made it five wins from their six games.

Fernando Santos’ men remain in second place in the group behind Switzerland, who won 2-0 in the Faroe Islands.

Four Saints gear up for Saturday internationals

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand are both included in the England squad to face Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow (5pm BST).

Gareth Southgate’s men will be looking to build on the 13 points amassed from their five games, with four wins and one draw in Group F thus far.

At the same time, Steven Davis will lead out Northern Ireland as they take on Azerbaijan in Group C.

Davis was named among the substitutes for the 1-0 friendly success against New Zealand as Michael O’Neill fielded a more experimental side, but was introduced at the interval.

O’Neill’s side are currently sat in second position of the group with ten points, behind world champions Germany.

Finally, Florin Gardos could also be in line to play for Romania in their World Cup qualifier away to Poland (7.45pm BST).

Romania are currently fourth in Group E, while their hosts are top of the standings at the halfway point.

2016/17 Season Review: March

Show/hide article…

Troy Deeney struck on four minutes to put Claude Puel’s on the back foot, but their response was superb and goals from Dušan Tadić and Nathan Redmond put them 2-1 up going into the interval.

In the second-half, Stefano Okaka had levelled things against the run of play to give the hosts a fighting chance of a point.

But the Hornets were soon stung by the majestic form of Manolo Gabbiadini, who made it six goals in four games when he pounced on a loose ball in the area following Heurelho Gomes’ parry.

The points were secured when Nathan Redmond netted his second of the goal late on, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late goal little more than a consolation.

Not since 1976 had Saints scored so many away goals in successive games and it was the first time since the 2010/2011 campaign that Southampton have scored four times in successive matches, after their 4-0 win over Sunderland.

In a month with just two games, there was immense pride as both James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond earned their first senior England call-ups from Gareth Southgate for their friendly against Germany.

Both would go on to make their debuts for the Three Lions in the 1-0 defeat in Dortmund, with Saints defender Ryan Bertrand also playing 82 minutes. Redmond was introduced just after the hour mark for Adam Lallana, while Ward-Prowse replaced Jake Livermore with eight minutes remaining.

Before that, it was not to be as a spirited display fell just short against the title challengers Tottenham. Puel’s men went to White Hart Lane in search of a third successive away success in the Premier League, but Christian Eriksen’s strike and a contentious Dele Alli penalty proved the difference in a first-half that also saw Saints lose Manolo Gabbiadini to injury.

On 52 minutes, the deficit was halved when Ryan Bertrand’s dangerous low cross worked its way to James Ward-Prowse at the back post, who made no mistake with his control and left-footed shot – but the hosts held on.
