Another busy day of internationals for Saints’ players

Show/hide article…

Following their 2-2 draw against Scotland in World Cup qualifying, Gareth Southgate’s England face France in a friendly at Stade de France (8pm BST).

Bertrand could be involved after playing the duration of the game at Hampden Park, but the Three Lions boss has already confirmed that Fraser Forster will not feature, with Tom Heaton and Jack Butland set to play a half each in goal.

Elsewhere, Yoshida will lead Japan in their World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Group B. He captained the side in their 1-1 draw with Syria last week at the Ajinomoto Stadium in Chõfu.

The Blue Samurai are currently top of the group, with two other sides also on 16 points.

Finally, Florin Gardos will be hoping to feature for Romania tonight as they face Chile in an international friendly.

Gardos was an unused substitute on Saturday as they lost 3-1 away to Poland in World Cup qualifying.

But he will be hoping to play some part against Juan Antonio Pizzi’s Chile at Cluj Arena (7pm BST), after being called up to the squad to replace Ludogorets defender Cosmic Moti, who was forced to withdraw.

The centre-back has been brought back into the squad by Head Coach Christoph Daum for the first time since June 2015, after a tough time with injury.

Forster record shattered by £30m Pickford

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster is set to be usurped as the most expensive ever British goalkeeper in spectacular fashion after Everton agreed a fee of £30m with Sunderland to sign Jordan Pickford.

Saints stopper Forster had held the record for three years following his £10m switch from Celtic to Saints.

Forster was one of Ronald Koeman’s first signings as Saints boss.

Koeman, now at Everton, is set to shower even more money on a young British stopper when he completes a deal for Pickford.

The Black Cats have accepted an offer from the Merseyside club which could rise to £30m with various add-ons included in the package.

Pickford was one of the few bright spots as Sunderland were relegated last term and he is currently in Poland with England Under-21s.

Signing a new goalkeeper had always looked like a top priority for Toffees boss Koeman this summer.

Last year he brought in fellow Dutchman Maarten Stekelenburg, who he had also signed for Saints, but neither he nor Joel Robles could nail down a regular spot between the posts as they made 19 Premier League starts each.

Everton were linked with Manchester City’s out-of-favour stopper Joe Hart when he was originally deemed surplus to requirements, and they seemed like one of his more obvious suitors again in this window.

However, Koeman has instead moved for the man who may be England’s number one further down the line.

Pickford was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award despite featuring for a team that finished bottom of the top-flight table.

He earned a call-up to England’s senior ranks in October and has represented the country at each of the six youth levels from Under-16 upwards.

Born in the north-east, Pickford came through Sunderland’s academy system and had a series of loan deals with the likes of Preston, Bradford, and Carlisle prior to becoming his boyhood club’s number one last term.

Should the terms of each of the add-ons be met, Pickford would become Everton’s record signing, eclipsing the £28m they shelled out for Romelu Lukaku in 2014.

The fee is short of the £35m Manchester City parted with earlier this summer to land Brazilian stopper Ederson, though Pickford would be far and away the most expensive British goalkeeper ever.

Transfer news: The players entering the final year of their contract at your Premier League club

Show/hide article…

It’s a risky game to play in allowing a player to reach the final season of their contract.

It’s at this stage that the clubs face the possibility of having to cash in on a key player – take Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil as examples – or seeing them leave on a free, to a club of their choosing, the next summer.

With this in mind, we decided to take a look at the players entering the final year of their contract at each Premier League club.

Find out who they are by scrolling through the gallery above.

Why Arsenal must learn from past mistakes and call Alexis Sanchez’s bluff

Show/hide article…

Alexis Sanchez has still not extended his contract and there is little sign that he is about to commit himself to Arsenal. The very public shows of frustration, a training ground spat with team-mates, the vague public statements and now Arsenal’s interest in both Alexandre Lacazette and Kylian Mbappe.

They all point to Sanchez moving towards the exit door and Arsenal trying to source a replacement before any deal is done. It leaves all sides dangling in what amounts to a high-stakes game of poker that is further complicated by the identity of those clubs interested in Sanchez. Bayern Munich, Juventus and to a lesser extent Paris Saint-Germain in Europe but Chelsea and Manchester City from the Premier League.

Arsenal’s understandable preference is for Sanchez to move abroad if he goes at all but, should he wish to remain in England, past history will surely not be lost on him. Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy were both sold to a direct Premier League rival in 2011 and then, in the most comparable situation, Arsenal eventually felt obliged to deal with Manchester United once it became clear that Robin van Persie had only that one destination in his head.

Tottenham eye Ricardo Pereira to replace Man City-bound Kyle Walker

Show/hide article…

Tottenham Hotspur have made Portuguese right-back Ricardo Pereira their top target to replace Manchester City-bound Kyle Walker, but face strong competition for his signature.

City are confident they will land Walker for £40million once the England international returns from duty with Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Spurs have already started the process of trying to replace Walker and Pereira is the number one choice of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pereira has spent the last two seasons on loan at Nice from Porto and the 23-year-old has excelled in French football.

He can play right-back, right-wing back and also fill in at left-back which perfectly fits Pochettino’s plan of trying to sign adaptable players this summer.

Can you help identify this mystery football team?

Show/hide article…

CAN you help identify which football team is pictured here?

Southampton resident Pearl Miller sent this photograph to the Daily Echo hoping to find out.

She believes it was taken sometime before 1910, but cannot be sure.

Her grandfather, Jimmy Woodling, is on the far left of the picture in what she reckons mights be a postman’s uniform.

Harry Woodling, her uncle, is in the middle of the second row.

She says: “I would be very interested if this photograph was of some significance in the football world.”
