Saints playmaker Dušan Tadić played the full 90 minutes for Serbia as they drew 1-1 in FIFA World Cup qualifying against Wales in Belgrade.
The hosts went behind in the first-half after Filip Kostic pulled Burnley striker Sam Vokes back in the box, leaving Aaron Ramsey to coolly convert a paneka penalty to make it 1-0.
Chris Coleman’s men looked to be heading for a victory, until Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled things up with 15 minutes to help register an important point.
Serbia remain top of Group D after six games, having amassed 12 points and a superior goal difference to second-place Republic of Ireland after they drew 1-1 at home to Austria earlier in the day.
Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini scored as Italy thrashed Liechtenstein 5-0 to remain level on points with group leaders Spain.
Italy had 37 shots in a dominant performance but were frustrated until they scored three late goals.
Manager Giampiero Ventura said: "The first half was useful because it taught us that if you try to do too much, you end up doing nothing.
“Everything went well in the second half when our play was more lucid.”
Man of the match Lorenzo Insigne gave Italy the lead with a superb goal, flicking a cross up on to his chest before firing in off the post.
Napoli forward Insigne played Andrea Belotti through to score the second, before substitute Eder volleyed in the third.
Federico Bernardeschi, another substitute, added the fourth with a long-range shot and Gabbiadini turned in Leonardo Spinazzolo’s pass for his first international goal since 2015.
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon did not have to make one save in his 169th appearance as he moved to fifth in the all-time list of international caps.
Italy and Spain both have 16 points, but with only the group winners guaranteed a place at next year’s finals in Russia, one of the European giants are set to be in the play-offs.

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Monaco’s £100m rated striker Kylian Mbappe, according to The Daily Mail.
The Frenchman, 18, is one of the most sought after talents in Europe after a stellar season in the Principality that included a run to the Champions League semi-final.
Mbappe is wanted by a host of clubs - including Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain - and according to The Mail Liverpool have thrown their hat into the ring.
The paper claims that manager Jurgen Klopp has held preliminary talks with the youngster’s agents as he attempts to pull off the transfer coup of the summer.
There are also rumours going around that Liverpool have not given up on signing Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international is believed to be putting the final touches to a new deal at the Emirates, but Liverpool could test the club’s resolve with a £40m offer.
