Jaidi previews Watford cup trip

Show/hide article…

Victory last week would have all but sealed Saints’ place in the last 16 of the knockout competition only for a late goal to punish a sloppy performance at Staplewood Campus.

With a second bite at the cherry on the way at Vicarage Road, Jaïdi is keen to see an improved showing from his team, particularly in forward positions.

“We didn’t impose ourselves on the game as we usually would,” he said. “My team is normally so good at playing through the lines and creating chances to score but we didn’t do that against Cardiff.”

“I told the boys that we need to react quickly. They had matured well and shown a really good standard of performance in recent games before Friday.”

Two convincing league wins over West Brom and Stoke had preceded that defeat and the U23s coach is expecting his young charges to return to their usual level at a Premier League venue on Thursday afternoon.

“I’m expecting a good level and a high standard game, particularly since it will be played at Vicarage Road.

“We haven’t had a lot of time to turn things round after Cardiff but we’ve made it clear that our end product and movement off the ball needs to be a lot better; Watford have quality players, a lot of younger guys who will be fighting for their places in the squad.

“The boys can’t wait to get out there and play at a larger stage than usual.”

Mauricio Pellegrino demands Southampton courage in relegation scrap

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says his players must be “brave” and “show their character” to survive Premier League relegation.

Following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at St Mary’s, Southampton find themselves one point adrift of safety with only one win since the turn of the year.

With just 11 games remaining in the Premier League season, Pellegrino has demanded his players show their courage and grit to help the club avoid relegation six years after returning to the top flight of English football.

“If the game is going to plan, everything is right, but in some moments the opponent is better than you and it’s unexpected,” Pellegrino told Sky Sports News.

"In this moment you need to be really brave and you have to show your character, to be strong enough to challenge in this situation.

“It’s difficult [to be brave], it’s not easy. But, also it’s a really nice challenge because the most beautiful thing in football is that we are competitive people. If not it’s impossible to be at this level.”

Pellegrino believes the scrap for Premier League survival is a great spectacle for fans and claimed there is more interest from around the world in the relegation fight than the title race.

Five points separate 10th-placed Bournemouth and the relegation zone, with 11 sides seemingly fighting to avoid relegation.

“One of the best things that the Premier League has got is that the competition is really hard and the emotion is there until the end,” said Pellegrino.

“It’s more difficult the situation in the bottom of the table than in the top, because Manchester City is away [with] a lot of points. But in the bottom of the table, every person that I know from different countries, it’s about watching the game from the relegation.”

Austin: My gut says we’ll stay up

Charlie Austin backs Southampton to avoid relegation

Show/hide article…

Southampton have a good enough squad to avoid relegation from the Premier League, says injured striker Charlie Austin.

The 28-year-old had scored five goals in seven games before tearing his hamstring at the end of December.

Southampton are in the bottom three having won just one of eight Premier League games without him since.

Austin told Sky Sports News he is still around five weeks away from returning to first-team action, but has backed his team-mates to pull Southampton out of trouble.

“My gut says we’ve got a good enough squad to stay in the Premier League but I’m under no illusions that in the Premier League you’re given nothing,” he said. “We need to perform now.”

Surviving relegation may be decided in Southampton’s next five matches, according to Austin, with the club facing a tough run of fixtures towards the end of the campaign.

“We don’t want to go to the last day of the season against Manchester City, so hopefully we can get the points we need,” said Austin, who admitted his World Cup chances are probably over due to his injury setback.

“You can’t wait on other results, you need to get the wins and that’s the most important thing for us.”

Claude Puel was sacked as Southampton manager following an eighth-placed finish last season, but Austin believes removing an under-pressure Mauricio Pellegrino is not the answer.

“It’s easy to turn on each other, pointing fingers, blame the manager, blame the board,” he said. "We don’t want any of that, we need to stick together.

"As players sometimes you’ve got to look at yourselves, in house, are we not doing the right things?

"I understand where the fans are coming from but they said this about Claude Puel last year and look what happened.

“We’ve got to get sustainability at the club. That’s how it used to be but first and foremost we need to stay in the Premier League.”
