There wasn’t enough money in rugby to fall into the trap

Show/hide article…

In all my time in rugby union I’ve never encountered an organised gambling school or gambling culture, one of the obvious reasons being that for decades everybody was amateur and had very little spare cash. Even in the professional era, nobody earns a fortune compared with many other sports.

You read about there being card schools at the back of the bus on old-style Lions tours but I would imagine they were playing for little more than matchsticks or beer vouchers.

Football is a different matter. During my year with Southampton I was surprised how the card schools started up as soon as we pulled out of the car park for an away trip and money was at stake.

I wasn’t in charge of the teams, I had been invited on to the coach by the manager, which I appreciated, and it wasn’t my place to say or do anything. But it didn’t sit well with me.

I like to think I always treated my rugby players as adults but if I had ever discovered a serious gambling ring in any team I was in charge of I would have acted quickly to stamp it out. I’m not a card player or gambler, so I don’t ‘get it’ on that level. But before a game — even the day before — I wouldn’t want my players being diverted down that road.

The extract from Kieron Dyer’s book in Monday’s Sportsmail was startling.

It seems only a small group of England players would participate but the amount of money changing hands was significant and enough, by Dyer’s own admission, to become a distraction to performance. Clearly it’s not a great situation if one player owes a considerable sum of money to another player in the squad. These things fester and get messy.

Theirs was potentially a great team, a generation of incredible players. To get an insight now into what was going on is quite shattering.

These card schools and gambling rings could potentially put pressure on teenagers new to the team to join in. Football is full of very talented young men, but when push comes to shove they are often still naive, with pretty limited life experience.

They are earning huge money very early on in their lives and suddenly there can be a lot of pressure from some very big names and characters within the team to be one of the boys and join in.

In the bigger picture, although England players gambling to this extent and becoming distracted at tournaments is disappointing and alarming, it is only a fraction of the kind of trouble many players, particularly former professionals, find themselves in.

It seems the FA and PFA are coming to terms with how deep gambling runs in the fabric of the game and among fans. Let’s hope the current and future generations are given the chance to learn from those before them.

But what about the other places? Scroll through the gallery to see where the other 19 sides are predicted to finish.

The table, of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt. As we know, anything can happen throughout the season, but it is always fun to speculate.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero tops Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week

Aguero scored four goals during a 5-1 win over Leicester on Saturday, while team-mate Kevin De Bruyne climbed two places up the chart to land the No 3 spot with a hat-trick of assists.

The Argentine’s scintillating performance ousted last week’s table topper Eden Hazard into the runner-up spot - despite the Belgian netting twice during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over West Brom.

Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were both among the top performers after getting on the scoresheet during a 2-0 win at Southampton.

Harry Kane scored the winner against Arsenal to retain his No 6 spot, while Christian Eriksen broke into the top 10 after creating four chances at Wembley.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri hit a customary stunner from distance to salvage a point against Brighton, while James Ward Prowse and Theo Walcott also made the cut.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

The week of action, which this year begins on Monday 26th February, sets out the connection between the club, Saints Foundation and the local community.

Romeu urges Saints not to panic

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has urged Saints not to panic ahead of a massive Premier League survival battle.

The Spanish midfielder, who also insisted manager Mauricio Pellegrino retains the full confidence of the squad, is well aware of just how precarious Saints’ current position is.

They find themselves in the bottom three with 11 games to go in a tightly packed table which is likely to provide one of the most thrilling relegation battles for many years.

Romeu is hoping for stability and calm to allow Saints to navigate their way out of danger.

He said: “We wouldn’t want to panic, and there’s always a solution.

“Of course it’s not nice to see ourselves down in the table, but last week we won, and came up three or four places in the table, which tells you that winning, you’ll get out of that position. But you need to win those games.”

When asked if Pellegrino retains the confidence of his players, Romeu responded: “Yes. It’s not the manager’s problem - we’re the ones playing, and the ones that have to change this.

“It’s conceding many things to the opponent, and when we’re playing away, maybe we’re not defending well enough – set-pieces – and teams are strong in that regard. This season we’ve conceded too many easy goals.

“Then closing the game down - we’ve had too many times when we’ve lost points in the last minutes, so we need to know how to close the games, how to play under pressure, and then we’ll know how to get points.

“It’s going to be very, very tight until the end (of the season). Every point’s going to be important.”

The likes of Crystal Palace and Swansea have staged remarkable revivals to give themselves hopes of surviving, and while Saints’ plight does not look as desperate as those once did, there is inspiration to be had.

However, Romeu remains total focused purely on his club.

“We’re not looking at other teams,” he insisted. “We know they’re going to win games. Every team is well prepared to win against any team in this league.

“We want to win games but we’re not looking at what other teams have done in the past, or if they’ve been struggling and they came up.

“It’ll be tight until the end, every point will be massively important. Getting points is crucial.”

It is quite a turnaround for Saints given their successes over recent years and Romeu reflected: “That’s football. It’s a part of our lives.

“We need to look at what we’re not doing right, and maybe do something else, something better.

“We are here because we deserve to be here, so the end of the season’s going to be crucial.

“We need to put all of our strengths in there to get something.”
