THE MATCH

Southampton vs Watford

Saturday 9th September, 3pm BST

St Mary’s

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Both teams remain unbeaten three games into the Premier League season with identical records; one win and two draws.

The two sides were held to goalless draws by newly-promoted opposition last time out before the international break.

Saints shared the points at Huddersfield, while Watford’s game plan against Brighton was thrown out of the window by the 24th-minute dismissal of defender Miguel Britos.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Mauricio Pellegrino has a fully-fit squad for the visit of Watford.

Virgil van Dijk, who has not played since January 22nd, is back in first-team training, while Matt Targett has overcome a knock.

Watford: Younès Kaboul, Daryl Janmaat and Roberto Pereyra are all back in training after injury, while captain Troy Deeney is nearing full fitness.

Sebastian Prödl (hamstring) is a doubt, but fellow defenders Miguel Britos (suspended) and Craig Cathcart (knee) are definitely missing.

Orestis Karnezis, Molla Waguè and Marvin Zeegelaar are all new arrivals who signed on transfer deadline day, while Nordin Amrabat and Costel Pantilimon both departed on season-long loans.

ONE TO WATCH

Brazilian youngster Richarlison has taken no time to showcase his talent in England.

Making his debut as a substitute on the opening day against Liverpool, the 20-year-old was involved in setting up Watford’s last-gasp equaliser before going one better by scoring in the 2-0 victory at Bournemouth.

An Under-20 international, the winger is seen as quite a coup at £11.2m, having established himself as one of the brightest prospects in South America at former club Fluminense.

Combined with raw talent and an ability to ghost past opponents is an impressive physical stature for one so young that should aid his transition to the Premier League.

New Sensory Room opens at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Saints’ Main Club Sponsor has teamed up with the club to create the facility, which will be open from tomorrow’s home game, against Watford.

The Sensory Room is one of the first in the Premier League and provides a calming environment for fans of all ages with sensory differences, or who may find the atmosphere of a football stadium challenging.

The club has worked with Autism Hampshire to create the space, which it is hoped will enhance the match day experience for existing fans, while also encouraging new supporters and families, who would not previously have considered attending a live game, to visit.

For some time, Southampton’s Supporter Relations Team has worked with families of children with autism spectrum disorder, anxiety and other sensory conditions to make their visits as successful and enjoyable as possible, and the new Sensory Room will provide a calming environment for those fans to experience the club’s matches.

Southampton Football Club’s Managing Director, Toby Steele, said: “This is a very important step for us, and one that we are very proud to have taken in partnership with Virgin Media.

“We are committed to making our games, and St Mary’ Stadium, as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all of our supporters. Our new Sensory Room will provide us with a fantastic space for fans who might otherwise have felt unable to attend.

“We look forward to welcoming supporters into the Sensory Room, and we will continue to work with them, their families and Autism Hampshire to develop it throughout the season, in order to ensure it fully meets the needs of everyone who wishes to use it.”

Brigitte Trafford of Virgin Media said: “We are proud to have funded the Sensory Room at St Mary’s, ensuring better accessibility for fans that need a quiet space.

“Our support of the club extends to the fan experience at St Mary’s Stadium and the Sensory Room is the next step in ensuring that all fans can enjoy home games together with families and carers.”

Any fans who feel they can benefit from the Sensory Room are encouraged to contact our Supporter Relations team on 02380 711980 or supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk.

Places in the Sensory Room will be available for all first-team fixtures, and are subject to availability. Proof of eligibility, in the form of a letter from a doctor/consultant or similar, may be required.

Pellegrino pleased by Saints’ spirit

Show/hide article…

Saints remain unbeaten in the league after a win and two draws in their opening three games before the international break.

And, while that is a good platform from which they can build, Pellegrino has called upon his side to continue to try and learn as they move forward.

“I think that every single game is an opportunity to improve and to learn from the past few games,” Pellegrino said.

“In the Premier League games at home I think we have played well and we have to keep going and push on in the same way.

“The best thing for me is the spirit of the team to learn, to be humble and open-minded from the previous games.”

With many of Southampton’s players having returned from international duty late in the week, preparing for Watford has been a little more complex, but Pellegrino feels Saints are in a good place.

“It hasn’t been a normal week because we’ve had a lot of international players away, so we’ve only been working with 11 players,” he said. "But, at the same time, we’ve been working really hard.

"The question mark is how the international players arrive back, because we have a tough game, but I am happy with the spirit of the players and how we’ve approached this week.

“We have to switch on quickly and be 100 per cent focused on our club to be mentally prepared to play on Saturday.”

Pellegrino: Wide men hold the key

Show/hide article…

The two teams will put identical records on the line in a bid to extend their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.

The Saints boss is wary of the physical threat posed by the Hornets, but is determined to see his players impose their own strengths on the visitors.

“Watford are a tough team. They have fast players in attack and they are good in direct play, with big players on set plays,” Pellegrino said.

“We have to manage the game in our way – to get the ball on the floor, move the ball and try to create problems in wide areas.

“This, for me, will be the key if we are to have a chance.”

The manager was left with only 11 senior players to work with over the international week, but was happy to see one of his absentees – new signing Wesley Hoedt – clock up a few air miles.

The Dutchman is still yet to make his Saints debut, but completed 90 minutes against France and Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying, which will only improve his match fitness.

“For me, it’s good news that he’s played two games for the national team,” Pellegrino added.

“Obviously he needs more time to connect with his team-mates, more time on the training ground and more time playing games, but this is the process.

“Every single player who is with us can help the team grow stronger.”

Butterfield: It’s a good chance to respond

Show/hide article…

The international break allowed Saints an extra week to prepare for the visit of Spurs, and Butterfield believes that the additional time has been beneficial for the whole squad.

“It has been a good opportunity for us to access the season so far,” he started.

“I think there was quite a big contrast between the West Ham and Fulham games. Fulham was a disappointing day for the team and it didn’t feel like us.

“We were quite flat as a group and now we have a great opportunity to respond to that and put into action what we have been working on in training.

“We’ve had a couple of in-house games and seen some very positive performances, so hopefully the boys can progress together now and put in a good performance."

Saints currently sit level on points with Tottenham in the Under-18 Premier League table.

And although Spurs have suffered defeat in their previous two league outings, Butterfield knows the threat that the north London side will pose.

“They are a very talented bunch,” he continued.

“They have individual players that are technically strong and they like to push aggressively from the front, which you expect from a Pochettino type team.

“So it is going to be a tough game, but if we can put into practise what we have been working on then I believe it will be a good test that we can come through positively.”
