Van Dijk’s under-23s return will be “beneficial”

Show/hide article…

SAINTS Under-23s boss Radhi Jaidi stated that Virgil van Dijk will have benefitted from playing 90 minutes for his young side.

The Dutchman made his return to action for Saints’ academy team in a 4-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium.

Van Dijk had not played since January following a foot ligament injury and his well-documented transfer saga, which saw him exiled from first-team duties while his future was decided during the summer months.

But despite interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, the 26-year-old was not sold in the transfer window and has begun his re-integration back in to life at Saints.

He’s been back in training with Mauricio Pellegrino’s side and last night played his first match for the under-23s.

“It was 90 minutes. He hadn’t played for a long period and 90 minutes will be beneficial for him,” Jaidi said.

The former centre-back Jaidi, who played for Saints between 2009-2012 and stayed on as coach after his retirement, was more concerned over his team’s 4-0 defeat – their third in a row in Premier League 2 Division 1.

He said: “It’s a learning curve for them. It’s a league that we’re new to. The boys need to understand that we’re playing against players who are hungry to beat them and motivated to get any point against us.

“We’re a team that try to play football and the players are adjusted to that but we need to stand up to the challenge at times.

“It’s the little things but it costs us big when we lose them in the game and that’s what happened tonight, especially in the midfield areas where we should have controlled the game better.

“The third goal could have avoided because of an individual mistake, but they’ll learn from it. It’s a learning curve and we’ll try to move forward."

The under-23s boss has seen experienced youngsters like Harrison Reed, Sam Gallagher, Harry Lewis and Olufela Olomola head out on loan for this season.

He believes this will be a big positive for their development, despite leaving him with a very youthful under-23s side at his disposal.

“The boys you mentioned there have reached their maximum level of academy development,” he said.

“They need man challenges, they need man environments and we make sure we help them in that aspect.

“We send them along to get game experience and hopefully they come back experienced men for us and play for the first team.

“That’s the kind of the path we’re looking for. Some players will go straight to the first team, some players will go to experiences here and away.

“Then hopefully they’ll come back as senior boys ready to play senior team.”

Saints fans launch campaign urging officials to introduce standing at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition in a bid to promote safe standing at St Mary’s Stadium.

The campaign is calling for officials to allow fans stand in front of their seats during Southampton FC home matches, which has collected more than 400 signatures in its first few days.

Cllr Andrew Pope, who set up the campaign, said: “I have supported the safe standing campaign for years and now is the time when together we can make sure that it is going to happen across English football.

“All Saints fans that I have asked in Southampton and outside St Mary’s support safe standing.”

Cllr Pope has written to Saints chairman Ralph Krueger to gain support for the campaign.

Clubs in England’s top two divisions have been legally required to have all-seater grounds following the 1990 Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster when 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in 1989.

Currently, more than 25 clubs in England and Wales playing in the Premier League and Football League have backed safe-standing with Manchester City, Aston Villa, Swansea City and Hull City among those in favour.

Royston Smith, MP for Southampton Itchen, said: “It has some merits but it couldn’t be introduced in the way it was in the past and the Hillsborough disaster is an example of the way not to do it. Premier League clubs should have a think about it.”

Cllr Simon Letts, leader of Southampton City Council, said: “I have always been supportive of safe standing, it adds to the atmosphere of football grounds.

“The opportunity to give fans a chance to stand would be welcomed as many fans already stand in a seated area if the relevant safety elements can be demonstrated.”

The Premier League said options were being explored with a survey.

A Department of Culture, Media and Sport spokesman said: “The government currently has no plans to change its position and introduce standing accommodation at grounds covered by the all-seater requirement.”

Saints did not wish to comment.

Van Dijk returns - but Saints are defeated 4-0

Show/hide article…

FINALLY the talking stopped for a moment and Virgil van Dijk returned to playing some actual football for Southampton Football Club – a sight few would have predicted in the summer months.

It was not exactly the ideal return to action with Saints under-23s losing 4-0 against Aston Villa under-23s with him and several other first teamers in the side – although this was mainly a fitness exercise for the centre-back.

The wantaway Dutchman, who played the full match here, may have been wondering why – after pushing so hard for the St Mary’s exit door all summer long – he was turning out for Saints’ under-23s rather than preparing for the start of the Champions League group stages this week.

To play in Europe’s elite tournament was of course one of the reasons why Van Dijk handed in a transfer request last month in the first place, with favoured destination Liverpool and Chelsea both able to offer this to the former Celtic man.

Instead, the 26-year-old, with little option but to return to work for Saints after the club carried out their promise not to sell the central defender, turned out at Walsall’s home ground, the Bescot Stadium –a place more au fait with the nitty-gritty of the Football League than the gloss of the Champions League.

But there was no sulking now – only frustration in defeat – from a player whose transfer saga was national news all summer.

At the start there were encouraging words and a few handshakes shared with his young team-mates before kick-off against their Villa counterparts.

First team coach Eric Black was sent by Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino to run the rule over Van Dijk from the stands and what he’ll likely report back is that the Dutchman may need more time get back to match sharpness.

Almost eight months on the sidelines, first with a foot ligament injury and then due to his transfer saga, has inevitably taken its toll.

He still commanded and organised the team around him, his voice regularly echoing around the virtually empty Bescot Stadium.

But he was still powerless to stop Saints’ academy side slumping to their third straight Premier League 2 defeat here – and should take part of the blame for the result too.

Jordan Cox with two well-taken finishes in the first half, another by substitute Harvey Knibbs sent Villa on their way, before Callum O’Hare put the gloss on a resounding win for the hosts early in the second period.

That heavy defeat came even with Saints having first teamers Jan Bednarek and Alex McCarthy also in the starting side alongside Van Dijk.

There were certainly signs of rust from Van Dijk, but that is expected after not playing a competitive game since January 22, when he suffered a long-term foot ligament injury against Leicester at St Mary’s in the Premier League.

Ultimately, this was a practice game for the Netherlands international and he’ll likely need a few more of these matches to start to get up to scratch, depending on how quickly Pellegrino will want to get him back to first team action.

He’s a player with class, undoubtedly, and there was good passing and reading of the game at times in this game, but in other parts he looked slightly off the pace.

For the first goal he broke away from his defence to win the ball, but O’Hare was able to ride his tackle and knock the ball to Cox to burst in to the space he’d left open to slot home.

After that he was unable to prevent Cox from firing in at the near post for his brace in the first half and could be accused of giving too much space to O’Hare for his strike on 53 minutes too.

There was communication from the bench to Van Dijk to check whether he wanted to continue in to the second half. Every time he returned with a nod to suggest he was able to carry on.

There were signs of frustration with the game beyond Saints by 53 minutes, he tried one of his meandering runs forward but was dispossessed.

It was a performance not up to usual standards from Van Dijk, but nonetheless a step back towards first team action.

Watch Virgil Van Dijk’s shocking defending in first match since Liverpool transfer saga

Show/hide article…

But those commanding displays appeared to desert him in his first outing for the Saints since the saga.

The Dutchman made his return from injury for Southampton’s U23 clash against Aston Villa last night (September 11).

His calming influence at the back should have shored up any weak links, but instead his side were trounced 4-0.

And it wasn’t just the result that was shocking, with Van Dijk arguably at fault for three out of the four goals.

Van Dijk returns in Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk made his first Southampton appearance since January, but he could not stop his side suffering a 4-0 Premier League 2 Division 2 defeat against Aston Villa at Walsall.

Villa, who had striker Jonathan Kodjia making his comeback from injury, were 2-0 up by the 24th minute thanks to two spectacular efforts from Jordan Cox.

Corey Taylor intercepted Richard Bakary’s backpass three minutes after the interval to increase the lead and Callum O’Hare hit the fourth in the 53rd minute.

The win meant Villa overtook Blackburn Rovers to go second in the table, three points behind leaders Middlesbrough, who they visit in their next match on Friday at Heritage Park.

Southampton, who are now second bottom, three points ahead of Fulham, entertain Stoke City on Monday at their training ground.

Saves of the weekend: David de Gea, Jack Butland, Lukasz Fabianski

Show/hide article…

David de Gea, Jack Butland, Lukasz Fabianski… who made the best save of the weekend in the Premier League?

Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea made a superb reflex stop to deny Jese from close range in a 2-2 draw with Stoke at the bet365 Stadium.

Stoke’s Butland also made a sharp stop later in the match to prevent Kurt Zouma heading into his own net and handing United the victory.

Fabianski pulled off a fantastic diving save to tip away a header from Joselu, although it was not enough to prevent Swansea slipping to a 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle.

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet, Bournemouth’s Asmir Begovic and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois are also included in our selection this week, along with Jordan Pickford (Everton) and Nick Pope (Burnley).

The event will take place at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday 22nd November, with Kelvin Davis and Kenzie Benali returning to present the show, which proved extremely popular when it was held for the first time, earlier this year.

With special guest appearances, the chance to get your hands on some special Southampton FC memorabilia and plenty of laughs, you won’t want to miss being part of the fun!

What’s more, 2017/18 Season Ticket holders and Official Members who buy a ticket will be entered into a competition to win a tour for four people of the club’s Staplewood Campus training ground with Kelvin Davis.

All proceeds made from A Game Of Two Halves will go towards Saints Foundation and the vital work not does in Southampton and the surrounding areas.

Davis: We must channel our anger

Show/hide article…

Saints go into the game looking to get back to winning ways after the 2-0 home defeat to Watford.

And despite their hosts difficult start to the season, which has seen them part company with Frank de Boer after four straight defeats, Davis is expecting a tough test.

“I was a little bit surprised that they’ve made that decision so early on in the season, but we’re expecting a tough game.

“I watched the game against Burnley and they were unfortunate not to take something from that.

“They’ve still got a lot of quality players who can hurt you and Selhurst Park isn’t an easy place to go. The crowd always gets right behind them.

“We’ll be expecting their players, with a new manager potentially coming in, to give their best and try to get themselves out of the position they’re in now.”

Davis added: “It will be a tough game but we’re looking at it from our point of view and we need to improve from Saturday’s game.

“We know we can do a lot better than that. There’s a lot of anger and disappointment with the way we played but we need to stick together now.

“We’ve got a lot more quality than what we showed against Watford and it’s about going out and proving that now.”
