Petr Cech explains where Arsenal went wrong against Man Utd and Southampton

Show/hide article…

Petr Cech urges Arsenal to improve their starts to games

Arsenal fell behind early at Southampton as Charlie Austin gave the hosts a third-minute lead following some indecisive Arsenal defending.

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to head home a late equaliser to earn Arsenal a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

Eight days earlier Arsene Wenger’s side found themselves 2-0 down to Manchester United with just 11 minutes on the clock and went on to lose 3-1 at the Emirates.

Those dropped points leave Arsenal 17 point adrift of leaders Manchester City and a point outside the top four.

And Cech knows the sluggish starts need to be eradicated.

Saints wait on Cedric fitness

Show/hide article…

Saints will make a late decision on whether Cedric Soares will be fit to face Leicester.

The Portuguese right back has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, but was back training with the first team at Staplewood this morning.

Jeremy Pied and Jack Stephens have filled in in his absence, but if he is fit Cedric is likely to come straight back into the side that takes on former Saints boss Claude Puel’s Foxes at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

However, Mauricio Pellegrino will delay a decision for now.

He said: “Everybody is ok. Today Cedric Soares was training with the team 100 per cent and we will decide tomorrow but all of them are ready.

“Today he was playing football, training with his teammates but we have to decide tomorrow whether he can be involved.”

Claude Puel confirms he tried to sign Leicester star at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Leicester boss Claude Puel admits he tried to sign Demarai Gray at Southampton

Gray has established himself as a key part of Puel’s first-team plans since the Frenchman was appointed as Leicester’s new manager in October.

The England Under-21 international has started six of Puel’s seven Premier League games in charge, contributing three goals.

And Puel, who was sacked by Southampton in June despite leading Saints to an eighth-place finish and an EFL Cup final, admits he tried to sign the 21-year-old winger at St Mary’s.

But the 56-year-old is now relieved that he failed in his pursuit as he gets to work with the versatile attacker at the 2015/16 Premier League champions.

“I saw him last season in the Under-21 games and he can play in different positions for me,” Puel told the Leicester Mercury.

U23 Report: Saints 2-4 Wolves

Show/hide article…

Early first-half goals from Tyreke Johnson and Marcus Barnes had put Saints in control but Kourtney Hause’s header halved the deficit before the break and Donovan Wilson levelled just one minute into the second period.

That turned the momentum in favour of the more experienced visitors, and Wilson added his second when he got the telling touch to turn home Morgan Gibbs-White’s low drive before a late effort saw him seal his hat-trick.

Radhi Jaïdi’s young charges started brightly and were rewarded after just three minutes, as Barnes capitalised on a defensive error from Hause to find Johnson on the edge of the box, and his powerful left-footed drive was too much for Harry Burgoyne in the Wolves goal.

And a scintillating start continued inside the 10-minute mark, when Barnes doubled the advantage from close range after Ollie Cook had flicked on Thomas O’Connor’s inviting free-kick.

The visitors looked a threat from Connor Ronan’s set-pieces though, and that helped them get a foothold back in the contest on 27 minutes when his corner delivery was headed home by Hause at the front post.

Jake Hesketh was the next to have a chance when he took in Ben Goodliffe’s clearance before driving towards goal and seeing his shot cannon out off the post.

It was a similarly frenetic start to the second-half, but it was Scott Sellar’s side who seized the initiative this time when Michael Zyro slid an incisive through ball into Wilson, who rounded the onrushing Jack Rose before a calm finish.

The turnaround was complete when Ronan’s corner was cleared as far as Gibbs-White whose powerful low shot from the edge of the box was turned in by Wilson.

Saints midfielder O’Connor did force Burgoyne in to a fine sprawling save late on from his curling left-footed effort, before Barnes hit the crossbar after Hesketh’s low centre had skipped up to him.

Wolves captain Wilson completed his hat-trick in injury time with a fine finish to seal all three points.

Stat Pack: Saints vs Leicester City

Show/hide article…

Southampton have lost just one of their 11 Premier League home games against Leicester (W5 D5), with that loss coming at the Dell in April 2000 (1-2).

Leicester City’s only win at St Mary’s in any competition was in a Championship game in January 2012 (2-0).

Claude Puel is looking to win four successive league games as a manager for the first time since October 2015 while in charge of Nice in the French Ligue 1.

Charlie Austin has scored eight goals in his last 11 Premier League starts for Southampton, including four in his last three games.

Since the start of 2014-15, only five English players have scored more Premier League goals than Charlie Austin (30).

Dušan Tadić provided his 26th Premier League assist for Southampton in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday – only Matt Le Tissier (64) has more for the club in the competition.

Riyad Mahrez has been directly involved in eight goals in 16 appearances in the Premier League this season (four goals and four assists); just one one fewer than in 36 games last season (six goals and three assists).

Demarai Gray has netted three goals in seven Premier League appearances since Claude Puel took charge, after scoring just once in his first 50 games in the competition.

Inside Track: Leicester City

Show/hide article…

How would sum up Leicester City’s season so far?

A real mixed bag. We started with a tough run of fixtures and after defeats to Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, Craig Shakespeare lost his job as City were flirting with a relegation battle. Since Claude Puel has come in there has been a great run of results. There was a sense within the camp that not a lot was wrong when Shakespeare was sacked, but the players have embraced Puel’s new approach and it seems to be a happy ship at the moment.

After three straight wins, what is the mood like at the club?

Buoyant. After all the uncertainty after Shakespeare’s departure, Puel has steadied the ship and results have convinced the players that his methods will work. Any doubts have been dispelled. I think the players quite enjoy the more possession-based approach we are seeing at the moment. Confidence is high and there is a belief they can challenge for European qualification.

What sort of an impact has Claude Puel had since his arrival and has the style of play changed?

He switched to a 4-2-3-1 and the front four of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray has been exciting to watch. Puel arrived with a reputation for playing defensive football because his Saints side didn’t score many goals, although he did lead them to eighth in the table and to the League Cup final, but so far it has been an attacking, fast-paced brand of football that the City fans are enjoying. He is also keen to bring through young players like Gray and Ben Chilwell.

Who will be the key men for Leicester on Wednesday night?

Mahrez and Vardy remain the main men for City. Mahrez’s form has started to return while Vardy needs one more to become the first City player to score 50 Premier League goals. Gray has taken his chance under Puel. He struggled to get a run of games under Claudio Ranieri and Shakespeare, but he has started all but one of Puel’s games in charge and is growing in confidence. Albrighton has been excellent too.

What have you made of Southampton’s form recently and what sort of game are you expecting?

The return of Charlie Austin has been a boost for the Saints but it has been a more challenging season this time than the previous couple of campaigns, but with the crowd behind them on Wednesday, City are expecting a tough game. The performance against Arsenal looked good and they gave Manchester City a good game at the Etihad, so there are promising signs.

Jaïdi reacts to disappointing Wolves result

Show/hide article…

Tyreke Johnson and Marcus Barnes fired Saints in to an early lead, before Wolverhampton’s quality shone through in the second period, as they emerged 4-2 victors.

The visitors fielded an experienced XI, including various players with first-team and international pedigree; notably, three-goal striker Donovan Wilson.

"I’m not very happy with the way we lost tonight, it isn’t at all acceptable, Jaïdi commented. "This is a situation where you are winning 2-0 and we’re in control.

"We’re speaking about managing the game, controlling it. We started to lose concentration and drift down to levels where we’re conceding the play.

"We let them dictate in the second half and they ended up controlling the game. We made really cheap mistakes.

"We prepared for the [experienced] Wolves side, we knew that from the start. There is no excuse in that aspect, you have to step up to the level and match that.

“First 15 minutes we unsettled them, but for the rest of the game we allowed them to get organised. We gifted them goals, which gave them some hope.”
