THE VERDICT: Austin makes the difference to Saints

Show/hide article…

Four in four and a new lease of life for his team and manager. Charlie Austin has reinvigorated Saints’ season.

Though there will be much understandable frustration at Saints that they again played so well against one of the Premier League big guns and failed to get what they deserved from the game, there are many positives.

Most of those revolve around Austin, either directly or indirectly.

Saints have had a long run of success in recent years playing with a target man type of striker, a focal point for the team.

For whatever reason, it seemed the club wanted to change style, go for something more fashionable, with players trying to get in behind and playing on the shoulder of the last man.

The result has been a lack of goals.

Mauricio Pellegrino has tried combination after combination of his squad, presumably trying to find something that might work.

It eventually led to Austin getting in the side, and they haven’t looked back.

Obviously, four goals in four games is highly significant for Saints, but it is much more than that.

This a squad that know how to play, and play well, with a striker of his type up front.

They look collectively so much more at home with Austin through the middle. They just tick.

And it is bringing the best out of Dusan Tadic, who we all know can be so creative, but loves to play with that sort of player as we saw with his combination with Graziano Pelle.

Austin’s recall came at a time when Saints were struggling, and his four games since have seen a comfortable win over Everton, a late defeat at Man City, when he only had a cameo role, a draw at Bournemouth and the same result against Arsenal.

Saints look happier again, they look more positive.

Despite having played so well against big guns such as Man United, Man City and Arsenal and having been denied one way or another, there are some very good signs there at the moment.

You sense the crowd know that too. From being edgy and anxious they appreciate what is going on, and against Arsenal, though Saints were defensively so solid they were also prepared to go forward too, and it looked so much better for it.

Saints’ positivity paid dividends as they flew out of the traps, taking the lead after just three minutes.

Austin was at the heart of it all, winning a ball from a throw in, and then playing a one-two with Tadic.

The Serbian’s brilliant reverse pass found Austin’s overlapping run on the outside and the clinical finish, as the striker brought it under control before burying it past Petr Cech, was utterly predictable.

What was less predictable was that Saints and Austin would get another fantastic chance just two minutes later which this time they wouldn’t take.

Again it was Tadic with the through ball and Austin in behind but he didn’t connect quite as cleanly as he may have hoped attempting to drill low and across Cech and the keeper was able to save.

Cech was at it again on 28 minutes, this time having to stop from his own player after the ball ricocheted off the shins of Granit Xhaka.

However, that moment was the breaking of largely one-way traffic as Arsenal bossed possession and launched wave after wave of attack.

Saints got pinned back at times, though were very well organised and kept the narrow central channels Arsenal tried to exploit nice and tight, and were encouragingly willing to commit forward on the counter attack.

Fraser Forster did have to make first half saves from Alexandre Lacazette and twice from Aaron Ramsey, most notably producing a superb stop to his left on 32 minutes.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also made a superb last ditch challenge, and Lacazette fired over, but Saints got in at the break with the lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern.

Though it was Arsenal who had most of the ball, it was Saints who created the best openings, and Saints who continued to be so impressively disciplined in every aspect of their play.

Nathan Redmond smashed a strike goalwards eight minutes after the restart but straight at Cech, while the Gunners keeper watched and hoped as Oriol Romeu’s effort from 25 yards moved in the air before clipping the top of the bar and going over.

They also crafted a golden opportunity on the counter attack, with Tadic playing in Ryan Bertrand.

The left back was one-on-one with Cech and lifted the ball past the Arsenal keeper but tamely wide of the far post.

Arsenal were full of intricate passing football, trying to play their way into the net, but the longer the game went on the shorter of ideas they looked, and the more confident Saints became.

It really seemed as though they would get the three points as the best the Gunners could manage was an Alexis Sanchez free kick which was a fairly comfortable save for Forster.

That was until two minutes from time when there was more late heartbreak.

Sanchez lofted in a cross from the right, sub Olivier Giroud got just ahead of Virgil van Dijk and flicked a header into the far corner to equalise.

Despite that, the mood is now one of greater positivity and optimism, and rightly so.

Romeu: ‘Austin’s proved his point’

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu believes Charlie Austin has proved to England manager Gareth Southgate that he’s worthy of a Three Lions call up.

The 28-year-old striker is in hot form, having scored his fourth goal in as many games in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at St Mary’s yesterday.

“Having a striker in that form is very good,” said Romeu. “Charlie is a top striker and we have to just enjoy that and keep feeding him balls, creating more chances and we know he doesn’t need much to score, so that’s a great feeling.”

Austin has been called up to the England team once before, but never made it off the bench in friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in May 2015.

Now, Romeu wants to see the former QPR man get another chance on the international stage ahead of the World Cup finals in Russia next summer.

“I see him going there [to the England team], 100 per cent,” said Romeu.

“He’s a good striker. He has the ability to get to so many crosses or getting into the area, he’s a clever footballer.

“He’s ready to go and he’s proved that. Every time he scores his chances. He’s always a danger man.”

Austin made his third start of the Premier League season against the Gunners and once again proved to be a superb focal point for Saints’ attack.

It has made a difference to the team as a whole, with the attack looking better balanced with Austin leading the line.

When asked if he reckons the ex-Burnley man makes other players perform better, Romeu said: “Probably, he’s a clever footballer and he’s a good player in the box. He knows how to hold up those long balls.

“He’s played so many games in this type of football, so he knows what he has to do.”

Austin’s goal was nearly enough to win the game for Saints against Arsenal.

However, a Olivier Giroud header, two minutes from time, saw Mauricio Pellegrino’s men concede a last-gasp goal in successive outings against one of the Premier League’s top six, having also seen Raheem Sterling score a 96th minute winner for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last month.

Romeu says Saints were left angry by the Gunners’ comeback, having missed chances to win it.

“It’s happened again and we were very very angry after the game, because we don’t want to concede like that,” he said.

“I don’t think we’ve done much wrong to deserve that goal because while we were playing I was feeling good.

“I know we were defending and I know we had to defend but I didn’t see them creating easy chances or getting into our box too easily.

“It was a good action for them to score but our attitude in the second and first half was exactly what we have to do.”

The 26-year-old midfielder insists Saints will learn from another late goal.

“Yes, of course, being in this position, it helps you for the next games,” he said.

“The thing we need to try and do is kill the game, get that second goal which will give us more room if there is a mistake, so we don’t drop points.”

He continued: “Right now we feel we dropped two points, but maybe at the beginning of the game a point against one of the best teams in the league would be something nice.

“But we don’t want to go out there thinking we just want one point playing at home, especially when we’re feeling good and, the way we’re feeling now, we want to get three points against everyone.”

Romeu has now urged Saints to push on and get vital points to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

“We need a couple of wins in a row to get back in a good position and get some points,” he said.

“Everything is so tight, as soon as you win you can go higher, but as soon as you lose you can drop places in the table.

“We need a couple of wins in a row and that will give us a good place in the table and that confidence that we need because playing well and not winning is frustrating.”

It’s former Saints manager Claude Puel who brings his in form Leicester City team to St Mary’s next, and Romeu knows it’s a huge match.

The Foxes have just won three games in a row in the Premier League and sit eighth.

“Losing would create a massive gap between them and us and we want to get closer to them and higher,” he said.

“There is no other option than winning.”

He added: “They’ve got some good players and they got quality. I think Puel is a good manager, so it’s good for them.

“It’s just performing well and doing well and being clever with the way they play in the system that works well for them.

“They are getting points now, so it won’t be easy.”

READER LETTER: Here are some questions which Southampton FC needs to answer

Show/hide article…

ALONG with several other supporters, I have sent a letter to Southampton Football Club and had no response.

There are some really serious issues which the club will not comment on.

The board is getting a free ride for decisions which are causing serious harm to our club, moreover there is a massive apparent hypocrisy between statements issued by or on behalf of Ms Liebherr and Mr Krueger and the glaring inconsistencies.

We should like to know the following:

We were told that after the departure of Mr Cortese a financial black hole had been discovered which necessitated a mass player exodus. What level of debt was it, £30m, 40m, 50m for the club’s owner?

We were told that this level of debt was unsustainable. How does the club view £210 million of new debt?

The club’s ex-owner wants to take us to the next level. Why and how is Mr Gao capable of this with five or seven-times more debt than Ms Liebherr?

The Southampton way revolved around a first team half filled with academy players. Why, then, did we sell them?

Southampton Football Club recognises its importance to the community. Why do we still not have an end, are banned from flags and banners and have no encouragement for atmosphere?

The catering and drink is among the worst in the Premier League. Do you realise the importance of a decent pie?

Major income for the bigger clubs is corporate. Why is ours so unbelievably poor and not effectively marketed?

Football is our branded product. Who allowed this degradation?

We were allegedly aiming for the Champions League in five years. Why are we looking at relegation?

Why did we lose Mauricio Pochettino? Ronald Koeman? Claude Puel? and soon Mauricio Pellegrino?

In all honesty does the club think they have performed well?

Jaïdi previews Wolves clash

Show/hide article…

Jaïdi’s youngsters halted Rovers’ ten game unbeaten streak seven days ago, earning their sixth (in all comps) clean sheet of the season, but attention now turns back to PL2 as Staplewood Campus prepares to host its final Under-23s fixture of 2017.

“Yes, great result [against Blackburn], that puts us at the top of the cup group,” Jaïdi reflected.

"The boys showed, most of all, the desire to win and to keep the clean sheet. The most important thing is to keep the momentum, and keep the winning mentality until the end of the year.

"Other clubs will look at us and follow our results or achievements. We look at other teams, their players, to give us an insight of how to deal with them.

“The boys have had a good week in training, for sure. We’ve had a positive few days following the Blackburn win, you can feel the spirit in the changing room.”

The visitors are level on points with Saints in Premier League 2 standings, with victory enough for either club to reach as high as sixth, entering the final league fixture of this calendar year in a week’s time.

Speaking about the strength of tonight’s opposition, and the value of the three points of offer, Jaïdi added: "Wolves have some good individuals, especially strong up front.

"They will go direct at times, especially under pressure, but largely they will try to play out from the back. They show a lot of energy.

“That gives it more of an edge, whoever wins goes above in the table. Hopefully we’ll do our best to come out on top.”

Who has dropped most points from winning positions in Premier League?

Show/hide article…

Wayne Rooney’s second-half penalty at Anfield rescued a point for Everton in Sunday’s Merseyside derby and helped the Blues’ halt their losing run against their rivals.

Liverpool had won the previous three clashes between the two sides and looked set to retain local bragging rights until Dejan Lovren’s foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It was the fourth time Jurgen Klopp’s side have surrendered a lead already this Premier League season. The Reds have led in 12 matches and gone on to win only eight of those games, drawing the other four.

That failure to consolidate winning positions has cost Klopp’s outfit eight points this season. Only four teams have lost more.

West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth could all be 10 points better off, had they not failed to convert a combined 13 leads into victories.

But it is Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle who have lost the most points from winning positions this season.

Joselu’s fourth-minute strike put them in front against Leicester at St James’ Park on Saturday. But for the fourth time this season, Benitez’s side failed to hold onto their lead.

Goals from Riyad Mahrez, Demarai Gray and an own goal from Ayoze Perez ensured Claude Puel’s side left the North East with all three points.

The result means Newcastle have now won only half of the eight matches in which they have taken the lead, drawing one and losing the other three.

A poor run of results has seen Benitez’s side slip to 16th in the Premier League. But at the other end of the table, Chelsea and Manchester City have had no such problems.

Between them, they have led in 25 matches so far this season and gone on to win all of them. City were pegged back to 1-1 by rivals Manchester United on Sunday but a goal from Nicolas Otamendi ensured they took all three points.

United and Tottenham, meanwhile have dropped only two points apiece from the combined 21 games they have led in, while Arsenal have surrendered only three points from 10 winning positions.

Ferry pens first professional deal

Show/hide article…

Ferry, who joined Saints in the summer after progressing through the ranks of Greater Manchester club Bury, has signed a deal that will keep him at St Mary’s until June 2020.

The youngster has made four starts for Southampton’s Under-18s side this season, scoring his maiden goal in a 3-0 victory over Reading.

Pacey and direct, the teenager has made an immediate impact on the left wing of Craig Fleming’s young side, and Ferry has himself been describing the moment he found out about the interest and a potential move to the south coast.

“It is a dream come true,” he began, speaking with elation. "This is something I have always worked towards. A lot of kids when they are younger dream of this. I feel lucky for it to be me.

"My Dad called me in to his office, and even now it still feels surreal. Being at a big club, a Premier League club, I was excited and nervous at the same time. Delighted to come down here, have a look around, and then it all fell in to place.

“I’m away from family and friends, but I feel settled now. I feel a part of the club and it is like I’ve always been here. I feel like this is my home.”

After overcoming some early injury troubles at the beginning of the season, the midfielder has worked his way seamlessly in to the Under-18s setup, but is aiming to get noticed in the higher ranks as his progression at the club continues.

“It was a difficult start with injury, but I’ve made a few starts for the 18s now,” Ferry commented.

"I feel like I’m performing, and gradually improving the more I play. It was especially nice to score a goal, which I dedicated to someone close to me.

“In the future I hope to be able to push on to the 23s, maybe a few appearances there and try to make an impact.”
