Sandro Wagner commits future to Hoffenheim despite Southampton links

Germany international Sandro Wagner has prolonged his Hoffenheim contract through to 2020, despite a reported €16 million offer from Southampton.
After being part of Germany’s renowned 2009 European Under-21 Championship-winning squad, Wagner finally won his first cap for the senior national side this summer and was part of the team which won the Confederations Cup in Russia.
In recent weeks, the 29-year-old had been linked with a move to Premier League, with Bild reporting that Southampton made a bid.
However, Wagner opted to stay at Hoffenheim and the club’s sporting director Alexander Rosen praised the deal as “a strong signal” on the club’s official website.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann singled out Wagner’s mentality, saying: “His character does us good. He keeps the opponent busy, pushes us, makes things emotional out there and is an important personality in the dressing room.”
The attacker said that he looked forward to Hoffenheim’s first ever European campaign and added that he wants “to help the club continue on its path also in the future.”
Wagner has scored 32 goals in 148 Bundesliga matches, and a further 17 goals in 67 second-tier games.
Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have signed 24-year-old left-back Nico Schulz on a three-year deal from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Having only joined the Foals from Hertha Berlin in 2015, Schulz struggled with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and remained a fringe player throughout his time at Borussia Park.

Saints to play Saint-Étienne friendly

Saints will take on the Ligue 1 club on Saturday 29th July, at the Stade Municipal de Chambéry, with kick-off set for 5.30pm BST.
The game will come at the end of the team’s trip to France, where they will be based in Évian.
Mauricio Pellegrino and his team will depart for the training camp on Monday 24th July, two days after the pre-season friendly at Brentford, before returning to Southampton after the clash with Saint-Étienne.
It will be the second trip of the summer, with Saints currently away in Austria for their first camp of pre-season.
News on further domestic friendly matches will follow at a later date.

Olomola excited for Yeovil loan move

SAINTS youngster Olufela Olomola admitted he’s excited to see if he’s ready for the “step up” as he secured a loan move to League Two side Yeovil Town until January.
The 19-year-old striker scored seven times in 16 appearances for Saints’ Under-23s last season and struck twice in the Checkatrade Trophy.
He also made his first-team debut when he appeared as a substitute in the 1-0 League Cup win over Sunderland at St Mary’s.
Having played his first senior game, Olomola is dreaming of more Saints action as he heads to Huish Park to continue his development.
“Seeing the first team play on a weekly basis was a great experience, some of the quality is unbelievable and I hope to one day be in that place,” he said.
“You gain a lot because you see the ability you need but not just the ability, the work you need off the ball to get to that level as well.”
He added: "I wanted to get a loan move sorted as soon as possible and I’m happy to be here now.
“This is my first time at first-team football, so I’m excited to see if I’m ready for the step up, but I have great confidence in my own ability and I believe I’ll be able to do great things for this football club.”

Saints book in another pre-season game

SAINTS have booked in their third pre-season friendly, with a game against Saint-Etienne on Saturday, July 29.
After playing St Gallen in Switzerland on Saturday at the end of this week’s training camp in Austria, Saints will head to Brentford on July 22.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side will then play the Ligue 1 side at the end of their second trip away to France, where they will be based in Evian from July 24.
The game will be played at Stade Municipal de Chambery with a kick-off time of 5pm BST.
“News on further domestic friendly matches will follow at a later date,” the club stated on their website.
