Saints book in pre-season opener

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have revealed their first pre-season match, with Mauricio Pellegrino’s men facing Swiss side St Gallen during their training camp in Austria.

“Saints will take on the Swiss Super League side on Saturday 15th July, at FC Goldach’s Sportanlage Kellen ground, which is in Switzerland, with kick-off set for 3.30pm BST,” the club state on their website.

"The short trip across the Austrian border will mark the conclusion of the opening camp of the summer for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

"Saints will leave for Austria on Monday, where they will continue their preparations for the 2017/18 season throughout the week with a series of training sessions.

"The meeting with St Gallen will take place on the final day of the trip and will be the Swiss side’s final game before beginning their own domestic season.

"After the match, the Saints squad will return to Southampton, before embarking on a second training camp to France later in the month.

“Tickets for the game against St Gallen will be available on the gate from 3pm local time on the day of the game.”

In Profile: St Gallen

Show/hide article…

WHERE DO THEY PLAY?

St Gallen’s home matches take place at the Kybunpark, which opened in 2008 and has a capacity of just under 20,000.

Their pre-season clash with Saints, however, will take place at the nearby Sportanlage Kellen ground, which is the home of FC Goldach.

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

St Gallen finished seventh in the ten-team Swiss Super League in 2016/17.

WHO IS THEIR MANAGER?

St Gallen have a new man at the helm for the coming season, following the departure of Josef Zinnbauer at the end of the last campaign.

Giorgio Contini, who used to play for the club as a striker, while also previously having been their assistant coach, was installed as his replacement, following a five-year spell in charge of FC Vaduz.

WHO ARE THE PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR?

Swiss Under-21 international Albian Ajeti was the club’s top scorer last term, netting 11 times for them, while Yannis Taffer bagged eight.

Midfielder Marco Aratore is also a notable threat, as is Serbian Daniel Aleksić, who has earned senior international honours with his country.

DID YOU KNOW?

St Gallen is the oldest remaining football club not only in Switzerland, but also mainland Europe, having been founded in 1879.

Saints and St Gallen met each other during pre-season in 2011, with the Swiss club winning 1-0, thanks to a Kristian Nushi goal.

Southampton striker Olufela Olemola joins Yeovil on loan

Show/hide article…

Yeovil Town have signed Southampton striker Olufela Olomola on loan until at least January.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut for Saints as a substitute in last October’s 1-0 League Cup victory over Sunderland.

He also made three appearances for their Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy.

Olomola is the sixth summer signing by Yeovil boss Darren Way, who told the club website: “He is a strong footballer with very good pace.”

Southampton star Virgil van Dijk a prime target for Arsenal this summer

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk looked set for a switch from Southampton to Liverpool.

But the Reds were forced to end their pursuit after being accused of foul play by Saints.

And Arsenal could benefit from Liverpool’s gaffe, the Mail on Sunday report.

They claim the Gunners may bid for a centre-back this summer.

Arsenal have wrapped up the club-record signing of Alexandre Lacazette and free transfer arrival of Sead Kolasinac so far.

Thomas Lemar could follow, with Arsene Wenger keen on a £45m deal for the Monaco star.

Ken Wimshurst: An Appreciation

Show/hide article…

Ken Wimshurst was a 23-year-old Tynesider doing his National Service on Salisbury Plain when, to his lasting amazement, Southampton’s manager, Ted Bates, came to watch him playing for RAF Netheravon.

Bates had been tipped off by his former Saints team-mate, Bill Rochford, who was now farming near Gateshead: never mind that Ken’s League experience consisted of seven games for Gateshead and that he’d failed to make the grade at Newcastle or Wolves, Rochford rated him worth a look. And Bates rated him worth a contract.

In his first, 1961-62, season at Southampton, Ken’s prospects at No 10 were blocked by Tommy Mulgrew, but he enjoyed an April flurry at right-half. He had found his niche in an exquisite triangle with Terry Paine and George O’Brien. The following season, that triangle performed unchanged, from October onwards, including a run to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

When the Saints reached the sixth round, against Nottingham Forest, there was press speculation as to which of the tie’s right-halves – Forest’s Jeff Whitefoot or Ken – might be capped by England. As the tie went to a second replay, Whitefoot was missing, injured, but Wimshurst was cheered off by jubilant fans, celebrating a 5-0 win in which he’d turned in “one of the best wing-half displays” the Echo reporter had “ever seen in a Saints’ side.”

Ken never won that cap, though. Paine, who would make his international debut on that summer’s European tour, recalls that “the word on the tour” was that Ken “was extremely unlucky” not to be on it. As Terry explained, when picking him for his Select XI in his biography, Ken was “a great passer of the ball, good vision; he gave me good service.” True, he wasn’t “a great tackler or a good header, with a big engine,” but the reality, Paine reckons, is that “you don’t get all of that in Ken’s position, unless it’s Duncan Edwards.”

For all of his scouting, on the Plain and beyond, Bates never did find a Duncan Edwards. Instead, he wrestled with the constant conundrum of whether to sacrifice Wimshurst’s attacking vision for the more defensive attributes of Ian White or David Walker. In 1965-66, Walker started the promotion campaign, while White finished it, in possession, although Ken became the Saints’ first-ever substitute in September.

He was a regular in the side’s first season in the top flight, until the arrival of Hugh Fisher effectively ended his Southampton career. He joined Second Division Bristol City, where, after five seasons as a player, he moved into coaching. He further coached in Scotland and Egypt, then ran both a sports shop near Bristol and the Saints’ School of Excellence in Bath.

He had always said that living on the south coast, after the north-east, was “like being in Majorca.” Even so, he opted to migrate to the Costa del Sol in 2003 with his second wife, Megan.

The former Bristol City player, Ian Broomfield, recruited him to scout in Spain for David O’Leary, first at Leeds and then at Aston Villa. He also scouted for both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Looking back on a close personal relationship with Ken, Paine remembers “a great guy – one of us”. Indeed, Ken would certainly be among the first few names on my team-sheet of lovely people.
