Show/hide article…

In a summer of over elaborate transfer announcement videos, Southampton have possibly done the best so far.

As the window hots up, clubs have been battling not just for signatures but to see who can unveil names in the most creative way.

Sides have used the likes popular video game FIFA, Snapchat and fans to announce players and Saints decided to give the trend a sarcastic twist.

It continued to say “announce the * signing” and showed several tweets from fans begging for Taylor’s renewal.

And, at the end of the video, Taylor, who has made a name for himself as a perennial back-up with just 88 career starts in a 20-year career, is happy to make fun of himself by raising a cup of tea to the camera.

Southampton mock transfer videos with their ironic anti-climatic unveiling

Show/hide article…

Football clubs around the world have been attempting to out do each other with ever increasingly elaborate ways to announce their news.

Some are brilliant, like Roma announcing Lorenzo Pellegrini by scoring as himself on FIFA.

Some are not, see Mohamed Salah liking “announce Salah now” tweets from overly needy fans on Twitter.

Aston Villa had a pretend WhatsApp conversation with John Terry and Plymouth used cryptic picture clues.

League Two Yeovil have even got in on the game by using Snapchat and FIFA to give their fans the news of the massive signings of Jake Gray and Olufela Olomola.

But Southampton, whose media team have already proven themselves as Champions League quality with their Jan Bednarek first person announcement, have raised the bar.

“It’s here…” the 58 second opus beginnings, luring the viewer into what is about to be announced.

When “another unnecessarily elaborate football club signing video” flashes on the screen you know it was the right decision to click on the video.

The rest of the video uses a crack team of army-esque hunters to search for the player.

The top of the star’s head is teased, a pen is clicked, and then the big pay off.

Southampton have announced…Stuart Taylor’s new one contract - you remember Stuart Taylor, from Arsenal’s title winning team in 2002.

Taylor, who secretly signed for Saints last season but never even got close to playing, has somehow earned himself another year aged 36.

Well done to him for earning the “Richard Wright Award” for a second season.

And bravo Southampton FC, you have produced the best announcement video so far this summer. Never change.

Show/hide article…

Southampton goalkeeper Stuart Taylor has signed a new one-year deal, the club have announced.

The 36-year-old arrived at St Mary’s last season to provide added depth to the goalkeeping department and has agreed to extend his stay through the 2017/18 campaign.

The club tweeted a minute-long video which, to footage of a helicopter landing, a speedboat setting off and soldiers pursuing a target, read: ‘Another unnecessarily elaborate football club signing video’.

Southampton mock new signing announcements with Taylor contract

Show/hide article…

Southampton have mocked the recent trend of dramatic new signing announcements by releasing a theatrical trailer for reserve goalkeeper Stuart Taylor’s one-year contract extension.

The elaborate new signing announcement is football’s latest trend, with teams from the Premier League and around Europe producing extravagant videos to unveil their latest acquisitions.

Liverpool announced Mohamed Salah’s arrival by posting a video of the Egyptian scrolling through a twitter account filled with ‘ANNOUNCE SALAH NOW’ tweets, while Roma unveiled Lorenzo Pellegrini with footage of the midfielder playing as himself on FIFA.

And Southampton have provided a satirical response to the fad, by announcing the fairly low key news that Taylor has signed a new contract, with a dramatic video akin to a film trailer.

The trailer begins with the message: ‘Here it is… another unnecessarily elaborate football club signing video’ as it cuts to clips of helicopters and boats approaching Southampton’s St Mary’s ground, accompanied by a thumping drum beat.

Negative film reviews then flash to screen, slamming the plot for being ‘needlessly over-complicated’ and demanding the club ‘just announce the f * signing’.

Armed officials are shown preparing to storm into an undisclosed location and a series of close up shots of an unidentified man build the tension.

Poking fun at Salah’s announcement, a series of tweets urging Saints to ‘announce Taylor’ spin onto screen as the trailer reaches it’s conclusion… before it cuts to an anticlimactic shot of Taylor relaxing on a sun lounger.

And finally Taylor turns to face the camera and raises his cup of tea, before a message flashes up on screen confirming his new one-year deal - the video is accompanied by the cheeky caption ‘Are we doing this right?’.

In a more routine press release, Taylor told the club’s official website: ‘It’s a great bunch of lads and a great group, and I’m looking forward to working again with a great goalkeeper coach and a great squad of goalkeepers.’

The 36-year-old has spent the majority of his career as a back-up goalkeeper and will continue to deputise at Southampton next season, behind No 1 Fraser Forster as well as reserve stoppers Alex McCarthy and Paulo Gazzaniga.

Taylor joined the Saints in August 2016 after a year without a club following his release from Championship side Leeds.

The goalkeeper previously had permanent spells with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Reading, in addition to a series of loan moves.

He has never made more than 18 league appearances at a single team - in total he has made 95 appearance in all competitions across his 20-year career.

Taylor, who came through the academy at Arsenal, has yet to make a competitive appearance for Southampton.
