Morgan Schneiderlin must dislodge Gareth Barry at Everton

Show/hide article…

The fee is the same and so is the remit - replace an ageing pass master and make the team tick.

Morgan Schneiderlin was supposed to be the heir apparent to Michael Carrick at Manchester United when he joined from Southampton for £24million in the summer of 2015.

Eighteen months on and, with Carrick still ahead of him in the midfield pecking order at Old Trafford, it is to Everton where the Frenchman now heads. United even look set to recoup every penny of their failed investment.

Gareth Barry is the man Schneiderlin must now displace, a player, like Carrick, whose genius is found in the seemingly effortless manner of his effectiveness. In short, they can make the difficult look easy.

It might not be the flashiest detail on the park, but the anchorman who can keep the ball and dictate tempo is an invaluable asset to any team.

Carrick can, so can Barry. And so, too, can Schneiderlin. Except we didn’t see that at United.

Schneiderlin has played just 11 minutes of Premier League football under Jose Mourinho this season. The manager, clearly, has seen something he does not like.

But the 27-year-old, surely, has not become a bad player over the course of one summer. He started 25 times in the league for Louis van Gaal last term and, while his performances did not scale the heights expected of a £24m recruit, an improvement this season was perhaps anticipated given 12 months to settle in what can be intimidating surrounds.

It is at Goodison Park, however, where Schneiderlin must now show that to be the case.

And don’t forget, it was on the back of a season at Southampton under current Everton boss Ronald Koeman that United made their move.

If a manager is prepared to re-sign a player previously under their charge then you have to trust their judgement on character, and Schneiderlin is said to be a model pro born out of humble football beginnings. It is interesting to note also that former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino wanted to take Schneiderlin to Spurs before his switch to United.

At Everton he can rediscover the spark and hunger which made him one of the country’s most-coveted players less than two years ago - even the England national team were looking into his eligibility before his debut for France.

For Schneiderlin’s best years are undoubtedly still ahead of him. He was just 18 when he joined Southampton in a £1.2m move from Strasbourg. He made 260 appearances on the south coast and, along with the likes of Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, was the driving force behind their ascent from League One to the Premier League.

He may not be an overly vocal presence, but Schneiderlin is the type to lead by example, a player who seizes responsibility - and Everton certainly need that right now. Barry, at 35, is creaking, while Ross Barkley, at 23, is cracking under the weight of expectation.

There is a horrible inconsistency about Koeman’s side, just look at their form figures for the past 10 matches - DLDLWLWDWL.

And that is what Schneiderlin will provide - a steadying presence in the middle of the park. They need a consistent performer, someone they can depend on week in, week out. He also adds an element of class - Manchester United, after all, would not have signed him if they didn’t think he had the tools to replace Carrick.

It hasn’t worked out for him at Old Trafford but that can be to Everton’s gain. Schneiderlin should certainly be motivated given his treatment under Mourinho.

Van Dijk against Sturridge “was like watching a man play against a little boy”, says ex-Saint

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s domination of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge “was like watching a man play against a little boy”, according to Jamie Redknapp.

Redknapp, who played for Liverpool and briefly Saints, was highly impressed by Van Dijk last night as the Saints central defender muted Sturridge in a commanding performance.

The England international striker is the top scorer in the League Cup with four goals, but couldn’t get past the Dutchman and his Saints backline, who have not conceded in the competition yet in four games.

"He (van Dijk) is immense. I say it every time I watch him, he just gets better and better. You know what it was like tonight, it was like watching a man play against a little boy with Daniel Sturridge,” Redknapp said.

“He bullied him all game. He never gave him a sniff."

Redknapp added: "Daniel Sturridge didn’t do enough today. He didn’t move around, he didn’t have enough touches in the box. I know, he might be in there thinking, ‘I didn’t get the service.’ But for great centre forwards, it doesn’t matter, they don’t need service, they make things happen for themselves and he didn’t do enough today.

“At times he was on the periphery wasn’t he? It was frustrating. Last year, when they won 6-1 here and I think it was Jurgen Klopp’s first real look at him and he probably thought great, this is someone I could use and he has got so much pace.”

Romeu was Barca and Chelsea misfit but Southampton prove shrewd again

Show/hide article…

A month off his 25th birthday back in August, Oriol Romeu would have known now was the time he really needed to make the step up from being a perennial bit-part player. Cast off by Barcelona and jettisoned by Chelsea, the Spanish midfielder has failed to break the 30-game barrier in any season of his career so far.

Last year at Southampton saw progress but the current campaign has been the real breakthrough: 26 appearances, all but one of them starts, and a position - at last - as one of the first names on the team sheet.

The Saints have a handy habit of selling quality for big money and replacing it with untapped talent at low cost. Romeu is the latest in the line - at a price of less than half the £11million Tottenham paid to take Victor Wanyama this summer, but 12 months previously.

On Wednesday night in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool, one of Southampton’s biggest games in years, he was outstanding in disrupting Jurgen Klopp’s frequently free-scoring side.

When the hosts dropped deep at St Mary’s, Romeu would slide back to shield the potential weak link of back-up centre back Maya Yoshida. When they needed to press, he was all over Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum, barely giving them a second to think. His was a key role in stopping Klopp’s team in their tracks, alongside Steven Davis and Jordy Clasie, while giving the platform for Nathan Redmond and Co to star.

Romeu’s 10 tackles outnumbered anyone else on the pitch by some distance and, with 36 passes, the La Masia graduate was among Southampton’s most-important figures on the ball.

It was the sort of all-action display that has often been seen from the shaven-headed midfielder in a red-and-white striped shirt this season: most notably in a starring role away at Manchester City in October and the league precursor of Wednesday night’s game.

But that sort of consistency has been a long time coming. Romeu started less than half of Southampton’s Premier League games last season and it has been a similar story throughout his career.

After rising through the youth ranks at Barcelona, including playing under their current boss Luis Enrique, he managed just one La Liga appearance under Pep Guardiola in May 2011. Two months later Chelsea, with better first-team prospects, came calling and paid £4.35m for a player new boss Andre Villas-Boas had identified as having the potential to excel in defensive midfield.

Barcelona clung on with a buy-back clause that could be activated within two years should Chelsea wish to sell up. It was never utilised. But Romeu started well at Stamford Bridge under Villas-Boas, who said he had a ‘brilliant future’ — until a serious knee injury suffered in a game against Sunderland ended his season in December.

His honours sheet from that year includes the FA Cup and Champions League — but he didn’t play in the knockout stages. With that, the window of opportunity for the defensive midfielder — then just 20 years old — closed. When he returned nine months on in September 2012 the confidence he had in midfield had gone and, after a few fleeting appearances, loans to Valencia and Stuttgart followed.

Romeu was never a consistent regular for either as his bit-part placement continued and when Southampton offered Chelsea £5m in the summer of 2015, accepting made sense with new midfielders having been added to Jose Mourinho’s squad.

He became a casualty of the club’s loan system, his own problems with injury and consistency and a revolving door of managers in England, Spain and Germany that saw him play under eight different bosses since leaving Barcelona.

But after a season under Ronald Koeman, Romeu has taken his opportunity with Claude Puel’s guidance this time around. ‘I knew I had a chance to step forward and I wanted to be ready for it,’ Romeu said earlier this season. He now ranks among the Premier League’s best interceptors of the ball and, with regular games, has improved on the ball.

A similar performance at Anfield in the second leg will go some way to putting Southampton into a cup final — and a start on the silverware you would expect for a man who can list Barcelona and Chelsea among his former homes.

‘Southampton can NOT allow both Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk to leave in January’, says Saints legend Francis Benali

Show/hide article…

Southampton legend Francis Benali admits Jose Fonte is likely to leave in the January transfer window, but has urged the club to resist offers for star man Virgil van Dijk.

Portugal international, and Euro 2016 winner, Fonte is keen to move on after eight seasons at St Mary’s and has submitted a transfer request in a bid to force a move.

The 33-year-old has subsequently been dropped by manager Claude Puel, and is not expected to play in a red and white striped shirt again.

Van Dijk, meanwhile, has attracted a host of top clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, after a series of commanding performances in the Saints’ stubborn back line.

Benali, who made over 300 appearances for the south coast club, concedes it’s only a matter of time before a player of the Dutchman’s quality leave.

But he told talkSPORT the Saints just can’t afford to let both centre-backs to leave this month.

“It’s a case of when, as opposed to if isn’t it,” the St Mary’s hero admitted to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Fonte has obviously expressed his desire to leave the club by handing in the written request, and that’s why Claude Puel has taken the policy to not play him. I get that, I agree with that.

“Van Dijk, though, he’s just pure class. Anyone who has even watched him knows the quality he has.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fonte leave in this window, but Southampton just can’t afford to lose both of them at the same time.

“I’d be very surprised if they allowed that to happen.”

Loris Karius: This is why Liverpool couldn’t beat Southampton

Show/hide article…

The goalkeeper was recalled for his side as they faced Saints in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg. But it was an unhappy return as Southampton now lead the tie 1-0 after a Nathan Redmond goal. And Karius says Liverpool lost because their attackers couldn’t create enough chances.

“We didn’t create that many chances," he said. "In the last game in the league against them, it ended 0-0 but we had a lot more clear chances that we missed. “This time we didn’t really get through – they defended really well and had some counter-attacks that really hurt us. "1-0 is not the result we were aiming for, but there’s still everything in it for the second leg.

“As I said, it’s not the ideal result, but we’re still confident we can turn it around. "With our fans, we will make it as difficult as we can for them. If we could score an early goal, that would be good. "We’ll see how the game goes, but it’s going to be really tough for them.”

Parkes: We showed a lot of character

Show/hide article…

Saints fought back from 1-0 down to secure their place in the fifth round of the competition, where they will now face either Liverpool or Manchester City.

“Obviously we are all buzzing,” started Parkes.

“We showed a lot of character tonight, I think. We were on top in spells and we came out winning big tackles but kept our heads and saw the game off.

“We beat Man United already and that was a very different game. But we’ve shown we can do two sides to the game: the physical side and we can play.”

Parkes was involved in one of the game’s key moments, as the 17-year-old denied Wigan’s Shane Donaghey from the penalty spot shortly before the break.

But despite his role in keeping Saints level at the interval, Parkes was quick to heap praise on the evening’s goalscorers.

“It was just a matter of guessing the way and going all out,” he continued.

“Luckily we got that goal advantage and we’ve won 2-1, so I am pleased for myself as well as the team.

“I am also buzzing for Michael and Jon as well – they got crucial goals for us, so I am really happy for them both.”

Why history is on Liverpool’s side after Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Liverpool may have lost the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final to Southampton - but history is very much on their side.

Nathan Redmond got the only goal of the game on the south coast as Claude Puel’s men secured a 1-0 lead ahead of the reverse at Anfield.

But Reds fans should take solace from their history in the competition, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The last time the Reds lost the first leg of a League Cup semi-final was in 2003, when they were turned over 2-1 by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

El-Hadji Diouf and Michael Owen would seal a 2-0 win after extra time in the second leg at Anfield, sending Gerard Houllier’s side to Cardiff.

It was there they would meet Manchester United.

Indeed, the other time Liverpool faced United in the final of this competition was 1983.

The Reds also tasted defeat in the away leg of that semi, too, at Burnley - albeit with the comfort of a 3-0 lead from the first leg at home.

They progressed to Wembley and met Ron Atkinson, Norman Whiteside & Co.

With United having one foot in the final themselves, Jurgen Klopp will hope history can repeat itself one more time.

Providing his side can get there, of course.

English clubs dominate European football’s rich list

Show/hide article…

European football is earning more money than ever before, club debt is down and new stadiums are going up, but a new study shows the vast majority of the wealth is concentrated on a few ‘super clubs’.

The findings come from UEFA’s eighth annual club licensing benchmark report, a 130-page trove of information that European football’s governing body describes as the “first and only full picture” of the financial health of 679 top-flight clubs from 54 leagues up to the end of 2015.

The Premier League emerges as by far the most cosmopolitan league in the world, with the highest percentage of foreign coaches, owners and players, and it is also the richest, earning £3.8billion in 2015, more than the combined total of the sixth through to 54th wealthiest leagues in Europe.

English sides dominate the list of richest clubs, with the current top six in the Premier League all in the top 12 wealthiest clubs in Europe, and 14 Premier League clubs, believed to include Saints, in the top 30.

The two richest clubs, however, remain Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, with Manchester United third, Paris St Germain fourth and Bayern Munich fifth. Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool complete the top nine. And it is these clubs who are really pulling in the big money and pulling away from the field.

Europe’s 15 richest clubs added more than £1.3billion in commercial revenues between 2009 and 2015, an increase of 148 per cent and three times more than the rest of the continent’s top-tier clubs were able to add.

And while the dominant message of the report is that the introduction of UEFA’s financial fair play regulations in 2011 have cut losses, increased profits and created a more sustainable environment for European club football, it is the rich who have benefited most of all from the combination of spending restrictions, new broadcast technology and football’s growing global popularity.

In the report’s introduction, UEFA’s head of club licensing and financial fair play Andrea Traverso wrote: "While European football can be proud of what it has achieved in such a short space of time, as in many other sectors today’s globalisation has increased opportunities and brought with it new challenges.

“Revenues are increasing but are very much concentrated at the top end (in particular broadcasting, commercial and sponsorship revenues), with only a limited number of clubs able to exploit the enormous opportunities offered by the global market.”

Traverso’s boss, new UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, was even clearer in his foreword, writing: “Of course, as the guardian of the game in Europe, UEFA must remain vigilant and take note of the less positive trends also highlighted in the report, such as a return to high wage growth and the increasing concentration of sponsorship and commercial revenue among a handful of clubs.”

That said, the overall impression is positive as the report says European club revenues have now increased for 20 consecutive years and 82 per cent of the world’s football talent, based on transfer values, is on display in Europe.

Among the report’s other observations is the increase of foreign ownership across Europe - a record 10 clubs were bought by foreigners up until November in 2016, with eight of those being Chinese investors.

The report also reveals that England’s second tier, the Championship, had the fourth highest aggregate attendance - behind the Premier League, Bundesliga and LaLiga - in Europe, but the Scottish Premiership was one of a handful of leagues to see its total revenues fall since 2009.

James Milner: What Liverpool can learn from Southampton setback

James Milner says Liverpool need to get better at bouncing back

Jurgen Klopp’s side left St Mary’s trailing Saints after Nathan Redmond scored in the 20th minute.

And Milner says Liverpool need to get better at bouncing back from conceding goals.

“The goal changed the game,” he said. “I thought we started well but didn’t have the clear-cut and goalmouth chances we would have liked, but the goal rocked us back a bit.

“That’s probably somewhere we can improve and make sure a goal like that doesn’t knock us out of our rhythm and we just carry on playing.”

Lawrie Mac pays tribute to Graham Taylor

LAWRIE McMenemy has paid tribute to former England manager Graham Taylor, who has passed away at the age of 72.

McMenemy, who was assistant to England boss Taylor from 1990-93, said: "This has come as a great shock to me and my family and I’m sure it will be to many in football.

"Graham was a very good manager but also a very good family man who will be sorely missed.

"He was one of the most unlucky England managers ever and I’ll always be grateful to him for giving me a role alongside him.

"His record as a club manager was excellent with Watford and Aston Villa.

"I remember being at Wembley when he took Watford to the FA cup final in 1984 and he has a stand named after him at Vicarage Road.

“My deepest condolences to his family.”

Liverpool could be cursed by ‘toxic thunder’ kit after Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

While there is much to admire about Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp this season, it’s fair to say that their kit – specifically their third kit – leaves an awful lot to be desired.

The fact that the colour of the strip is actually described by the manufacturers as “toxic thunder” should tell you all you need to know.

As well as being retina-searingly hideous, it has emerged that playing in “toxic thunder” may also have more literal ramifications – and not in a good way.

Indeed, it was noted in the aftermath of Wednesday evening’s 1-0 EFL Cup defeat against Southampton that Liverpool have now worn their grotesque green third kit in all three of the games they’ve lost so far this season.

Any pragmatic fan could probably write it off as little more than an unhappy coincidence, but some supporters seem to believe there is a genuine link between the gaudy kit and an inability to get results.

To be perfectly frank, even as stoic neutrals, the sooner that fluorescent abomination is taken out of circulation, the better for all of us.
