Puel: Saints have “nothing to lose”

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Saints have “nothing to lose” as they take on Liverpool bidding for Wembley in the EFL Cup.

After the recent form of both sides, Puel conceded that Liverpool were strong favourites, not only for tonight’s first leg at St Mary’s but also the return game at Anfield in a fortnight.

Puel has urged Saints to try and make sure they have it all to play for the trip to Merseyside, with Jurgen Klopp having promised he will field his strongest side for tonight’s clash.

Puel, whose team held Liverpool to a goalless draw at St Mary’s in the top flight earlier in the season, said: “We played this game in the Premier League, it was a strong game for us in defensive organisation.

“It was strong work to keep a good level, but I think it will be important also for this game to have a little more the ball and try to have control of the game.

“I know it’s difficult against this team because of their ability to recover the ball together with their strong pressing. Also to keep the ball with technical players and quality and organisation.

“I think we are not favourite for this game and the second half away is difficult also but we have nothing to lose, just to play good level, to take pleasure and to make a result.”

Puel was refusing to look ahead to the prospect of a Wembley final in his first season in charge at St Mary’s, and insisted he would focus only on tonight’s game.

“For the moment it’s just speculation,” he insisted. “It’s important for the moment it’s a semi-final, a good thing and a good answer.

“Since the beginning of this competition we have young players, experienced players, and we use all the squad on this competition.

“It will be fantastic to have a next game after the second round at Liverpool, but for the moment it’s important to keep the good concentration.

“It’s strong work, an exciting challenge but very difficult.

“We have to take pleasure and try to make this experience. It’s not possible at the moment to think about this final.”

Saints come into the game on poor form, having lost three top flight matches in six days over the festive period, before being held to an FA Cup third round draw at Championship side Norwich.

However, Puel does not think that has to be a deciding factor.

“Since the beginning of the season every time play another game every week and it is hard to work and keep a good fit, a good physical,” he reckoned.

“They are ready for the next game and I say it is a good challenge for us and exciting, because three games in Premier League was strong and disappointment.

“Now we come back to look forward with many games in January. It is difficult but we knew since the beginning of the season different possibilities and we can have the good answer every time.

“Liverpool are a great team and for the first round we try to have a good result and prepare the second round at Liverpool.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for us and I think the players are ready for this game.”

Poignant ceremony held to remember Saints fan Jack who died suddenly

Show/hide article…

A POIGNANT ceremony has been held by the friends of Jack Dowding as Southampton’s community continues to remember the 20-year-old Saints fan who died at his Hedge End home on Saturday.

Anniemay Caroline, a friend of Jack’s, rallied together a group of his friends and classmates to let off red and white balloons outside Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, where he had studied public services.

The 20-year-old said: “The balloons were red and white because Jack was a Saints fan and was going to the League Cup game tomorrow. This was also an opportunity for us all to meet us and talk about our memories with Jack.”

Alice Wrighton, principal of Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, described Jack as an “amazing young man” and a “much-loved member of the community”.

She added: “It’s been a very sad day for us all. Jack worked very hard here to achieve the qualifications he needed to progress and was looking forward to progressing from his Level 3 Public Services course on to university in 2017.

“We will miss his positive attitude, his smile and his laughter, and indeed everything he brought to this community.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Anniemay added: “I have had so many people messaging me about him. I have friends in Portsmouth and Isle of Wight who have got in touch, saying how they knew him and how much of a lovely guy he was.”

Tributes have continued to pour in from Southampton’s community following news of Jack’s sudden death.

A campaign to hold a minute’s applause for Jack at tonight’s Southampton’s cup clash with Liverpool was organised by his friends as soon the news he had died was shared on social media.

The #20mclapforjack campaign has been picked up on social media, even prompting a message of support from Southampton FC on Twitter.

The club encouraged its fans to join in the round of applause in the twentieth minute of tomorrow’s match.

Tributes have also flooded in from fans of YNFA, a large Facebook footballing community page which has been ‘Liked’ by more than one million people.

So far, more than 2,000 reactions have been posted from football fans across the globe, alongside 170 messages of condolence.

Jack’s father Laurence, who will be attending tomorrow night’s match in Jack’s place, said he was “totally overwhelmed” by the support.

Mr Dowding also thanked Southampton FC, who donated three football shirts emblazoned with Jack’s name and the number 20.

“I fully expected to buy them,” he said. “But I got a call saying the club would like to give me the shirts.”

Reflecting on the support offered for his son, Mr Dowding said: “It just reaffirms what a special person Jack was and how many lives he touched.

“The family has taken great strength from the messages of love and support that have come from so many different areas.

“I would like to thank everyone who has offered support.”

Cedric Soares ready to “fight” to relive Euro 2016 emotions with Saints

Show/hide article…

CEDRIC Soares was reliving his Europeans Championship 2016 glory last summer with his parents over Christmas.

Now he is ready to “fight” to replicate that elation with his first trophy at Saints.

Claude Puel’s men have the opportunity to win Saints their first piece of major silverware since the FA Cup triumph 41 years ago.

But first they have to get past Premier League high-fliers Liverpool in their League Cup semi-final double header.

Cedric played alongside Saints captain Jose Fonte during Portugal’s famous Euro 2016 win last July and hasn’t stopped living that moment ever since.

“It was an amazing summer,” he said. “I was watching the game against France not long ago on Portuguese TV with my parents.

“I don’t really remember the way we played because we were under so much pressure that you cannot remember.

“I just got this amazing feeling about this game, about the way we won the Euro Cup, and the way we partied after and the way we were so proud to make our country proud of us.

“It’s a really amazing feeling. I don’t have words to explain it.”

His emotions are clear, as he bursts in to a wide smile at any mention of Portugal’s exploits.

“It’s something that will stay with me through my career forever,” he said. “I’m very proud to be part of it. It’s amazing.

“I remember we were there and we said to each other what we could achieve. Nobody did that in Portugal before and we did it.

“You are the first. It’s amazing and I feel proud. The way we won it, the way we fight for it.”

The League Cup may not have the same prestigious reputation as the European Championship, but the 25-year-old insists Saints must channel a similar mentality to Portugal as they head into their double header against Liverpool.

“A trophy is always a trophy even if people take away a little bit of the importance,” he said.

“Southampton need to fight for it. We are close. It’s just four teams and anything can happen.

“We say to each other in the Euros ‘we are already in the best four and everything can happen’.

“Let’s do this and try this. Let’s be focused on the trophy and to get there.”

Cedric won the Taca de Portugal – the Portuguese domestic cup – with Academica and Sporting Lisbon, before moving to Saints for £4.7m in June 2015.

He knows what it takes to emerge victorious from knockout competitions and is adamant Saints “can achieve some trophies”.

“It would be amazing,” he said. “To our profile it would be amazing when you win.

“To be winning something with Southampton would be really nice because it’s my first experience out of my country and I really enjoy playing for Saints.

“I know the Premier League is difficult to be winning but of course we can achieve some trophies. It would be really good stuff.”

What channel is Southampton vs Liverpool on? All you need to know

Show/hide article…

Southampton and Liverpool face off in the EFL Cup semi-final with both sides eyeing a spot in the Wembley final.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were beaten in two finals last term, with the German seeking his first trophy on Merseyside.

They suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City last term and a first-leg victory will set them up perfectly for a Wembley return.

Southampton haven’t had the best start to 2017 and have been rocked by the news skipper Jose Fonte wants to go.

Can they turn things around with a first-leg victory?

Here is all you need to know ahead of the clash.

The clash takes place on Wednesday January 11, with kick-off at 7:45pm.

You can watch the action on Sky Sports 1, with coverage getting underway at 7:30pm.

Southampton will again be without skipper Jose Fonte for the semi-final.

The Portuguese handed in a transfer request last week and has not been included in the squad.

Liverpool have been boosted by the news Philippe Coutinho could return on the south coast.

The Brazilian has been out for nearly seven weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Claude Puel has confirmed Jose Fonte won’t feature for Southampton - and may not play again until the end of the transfer window.

He said: "Jose won’t participate for this game. We will see for the next game. It is important to keep stability.

"We do not know the future of Jose, it is a difficult situation in the market. I respect Jose, it is not an easy situation for the staff or players. It is difficult.

"For me, it is important to keep stability in defence first, and second, we will see what the situation of Jose in this market is.

Jurgen Klopp has backed Daniel Sturridge to nail down a starting role in Sadio Mane’s absence.

He said: “If Daniel is fit are there any arguments here ever about his quality? No.”

"His talent and skill there is absolutely no doubt about. Cleverness. Everything you need on the pitch… Absolutely outstanding.

"But he has often not been enough fit. So that is another important part. But that is all.

Premier League transfer news and rumours: ‘Sam Allardyce considers cashing in on Christian Benteke’

Show/hide article…

Good morning and welcome to another morning of Premier League transfer news and rumours as things begin to gather pace after a slow start to the January window.

Sam Wallace and Matt Law reported yesterday that Bournemouth are plotting an audacious loan move for Chelsea captain John Terry after the Blues opted to end Nathan Ake’s stay at Dean Court.

This time last year, it seemed as if Terry and Chelsea were going to depart on bad terms after Terry took it upon himself to announce that he wasn’t getting a new deal and the ‘fairytale ending’ he desired.

The club eventually softened its stance and offered him a one-year extension but the former England captain has struggled for minutes this season after injury and the fine form of Antonio Conte’s first-choice back three.

Were he to move to Bournemouth, Terry would play more football but miss out on the chance to play a role in a possible title-winning campaign. Should he remain and Chelsea prevail in the title race, it would be Terry’s fifth league winners’ medal.

Liverpool make the trip to the south coast looking to secure their spot in a second consecutive EFL Cup final.

Reader letter: Saints players need to pull their socks up

Show/hide article…

HOW many times after a Saints game do we read a follow up article in this paper, quoting a player as saying “We must learn by our mistakes, we must concentrate until the final whistle.”

Maya Yoshida has said it again today, regarding the 2-2 draw with Norwich in the FA Cup. These guys are highly paid professional sportsmen. He said of the players “We’re totally disappointed”.

Well Maya how do you think that us fans feel. Let down, taken for granted, frustrated, angry, cheated, pick any or all of these.

When will you learn that if the referee has not blown his whistle yet you must keep concentrating.

Les Reed inferred in the excellent article by Adam Leitch last week that the players are running themselves into the ground. Well they are paid to!

The diet, the training, the coaching and all the other top class facilities at Staplewood ensure that they are kept in top class condition – unless injured of course – so they ought to be able to play twice in most weeks at least.
