Fonte could be dropped until transfer window is closed

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has hinted that Jose Fonte could be left out of the Saints squad until the end of the January transfer window.

The Saints defender has turned down the chance to extend his contract and take a pay rise, and has told the club he wishes to leave this month.

Puel has been prepared to play Fonte over the past few months, despite knowing his skipper’s feelings on the matter, but with the window open is now having to make a decisive stand.

Although matters could change if the 33-year-old is still at the club at the close of the window, or if Saints really need Fonte to step into the breach during their fixture pile-up, Puel indicated he would be left out for the time being, including for tomorrow night’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg tie with Liverpool at St Mary’s.

Puel said: “I want to keep stability for these games with a player without movement in the window market. It is important to keep stability on the team and it is difficult for us, for me, with a player perhaps in two days here and two days out to another club. It is just to respect this.

“It is a particular situation and I try to have the good answer but it’s not easy. It’s not easy for the staff, it’s not easy for the player to play with this condition and this situation. It is not easy for the squad but we are professional, and our work is to give an answer on particular work, and this is a particular situation in the window market.”

The decision leaves Puel with just two experienced centre halves - Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida – while youngster Jack Stephens might also be required with a hectic period in progress.

“Perhaps we will see Stephens for example, a possibility, and after with Jose the situation for the moment is this,” said Puel.

“After the window market it will be another situation and we will see at this moment.

“For the moment it is a reality and we take this reality and this situation to keep stability normal.

“I say Jose we keep stability for the next game and we will see for the next game.”

When asked whether Fonte could play at all this month, or the situation remains the same until he leaves or the window closes, Puel replied: “I cannot answer game after game.

“The situation for the next games is this, but I know that if we need with the urgency of the situation I know I can count about Jose, because it’s a professional player, important, and I know he gives the best on the ground. This is important.

“I respect Jose and I know we can count on him if the situation is like this.”

Charlie Nicholas: This Liverpool star will be the difference in Southampton EFL Cup clash

Show/hide article…

And Nicholas is backing Lallana - who left the Saints to join Liverpool in 2014 - to tear apart Claude Puel’s men.

The Reds travel to Southampton tomorrow night as Jurgen Klopp searches for silverware at Anfield.

LIVERPOOL take on Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, but who will start?

“The question about Southampton is are they going to go for it? I could see them sit in, play on the counter-attack and treat it like an away game,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

"I think they’ve been getting a bit bland under Claude Puel and you do wonder where the goals are going to come from.

Everton ready to move for wantaway Southampton skipper Jose Fonte

Show/hide article…

Everton are ready to swoop for exiled defender Jose Fonte after the Southampton captain was axed for tonight’s EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Saints boss Claude Puel admitted yesterday that the club were now preparing to listen to offers for 33-year-old Portuguese Euro2016 winner.

Puel said: “Jose does not participate in this game. We see for the next game.

“For me it is important to keep stability in the defence first, and second we will see if the situation of Jose in this market.

“After it will be another thing, but for the moment it’s a situation about the possibility of Jose and different possibilities for him for the moment.”

Fonte has already handed in a transfer request with Ronald Koeman keen to land him as part of his mid-season revamp at Goodison Park.

Everton, seventh in the Premier League, were bundled out of FA Cup at home by Leicester last Saturday. Koeman’s side were exposed by the pace of two-goal Ahmed Musa and the Toffees boss has also seen his side beaten six times in the top flight.

Southampton are understood to want as much as £12million for the Fonte. The club are also keen to identify and bring in a replacement before they would be prepared to sanction his departure.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is on the Saints’ shortlist with Puel having already explored the possibility.

Asked about the 26-year-old Frenchman, frozen out completely by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, Puel said: “I don’t comment. I don’t comment on a different possibility or situation.

“In the market it is important to stay calm whether possibility or not possibility.

“I like to speak about the subject ready and normal, and the time made for the moment is just speculation about Sakho and different players perhaps.

“It is not possible for me to comment on any possibility on this situation.”

Premier League transfer news and rumours: Jurgen Klopp’s hands-off message to Barca over Philippe Coutinho

Show/hide article…

The biggest transfer story doing the rounds this morning is Jurgen Klopp’s hands-off message to Barcelona over Philippe Coutinho.

The Spanish giants are prepared to make a £60m move for the Liverpool midfielder this month but the Anfield manager has told Barcelona in no uncertain terms that Coutinho is simply not available.

Klopp said: “We never had any ideas or plans or any talks about him leaving, because he is our player – there are no other ideas, nothing has changed.”

Coutinho returns to action for Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final tonight against Southampton after a six-week lay-off through injury.

Klopp had been hoping that his absence might have made rivals forget about targetting him in the transfer window.

Agent reveals striker could be heading to England: Deal will be complete next week

Show/hide article…

The 25-year-old Napoli forward has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks. Transfermarketweb claim Everton, West Ham, West Brom, Southampton, Stoke and Watford are all eager to land the Italy international this month. German trio Borussia Monchengladbach, Schalke and Wolfsburg are also competing for his signature.

“Premier League or Bundesliga? He’ll definitely join one out of those two leagues” Gabbiadini’s agent, Silvio Pagliari, says his client is heading to either the Premier League or the Bundesliga in the current transfer window and his move will be completed very soon. Pagliari told Italian outlet Radio Onda Libera: "The decision is made, Manolo is leaving. "We’ll have it arranged at the end of next week. "Premier League or Bundesliga? He’ll definitely join one out of those two leagues.

"He is very suitable for both, since being a technical as well as a powerful player. “But, before all is done, you won’t hear me saying where he could go.” Gabbiadini has scored four goals in 18 appearances for Napoli so far this season. He netted the equaliser as Maurizio Sarri’s men beat Sampdoria in their Serie A clash on Saturday.

Cédric and Martina back for cup clash

Show/hide article…

Saints were without the two right-backs for the game against Norwich City, having seen Martina struck down with illness and Cédric miss out after picking up a head injury against Everton in the last Premier League game.

But the duo are now back fit and available for the game against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Puel said: “Cuco Martina was ill for the last game but he is now available against and Cédric is also after he recovered from his problem against Everton.

“[Sofiane] Boufal will be out injured with his knee. He won’t be participating in the African Cup of Nations, and will be with us for his recovery. I hope we can see him back in three weeks.

“Charlie Austin is still injured, Alex McCarthy is still injured but Jake Hesketh has now come back into training and this is good for him.”

SAINTS: EFL Cup semi-final edition now available

Show/hide article…

The semi-final issue of SAINTS matchday magazine for the visit of Liverpool features an in-depth interview with Jordy Clasie, and is now available to pre-order online.

You can find copies of all this season’s editions of SAINTS on our partner site: saintsmagazines.co.uk

Wednesday’s special edition of the magazine is formed of 68 pages and is on sale for £3 online and at St Mary’s.

Dutchman Clasie recalls the disappointment of last season’s cup exit to Liverpool and how that will spur him on this time around. The midfielder also scored a key goal that helped Saints beat Arsenal in the previous round, and explains how he’s love to reach Wembley with Southampton.

Also inside the magazine, we look back on some previous cup encounters with Liverpool, which include the first year of the League Cup, when Saints beat Bill Shankly’s side.

There’s a look at what happened on this day in Southampton’s history, as well as how Saints progressed to this round of the competition at Arsenal’s expense.

SAINTS columnist Franny Benali reflects on the team’s recent form, and explains why he hopes Saints can reach Wembley and compete in two other competitions in the second half of the season.

What’s more, we find out what to expect from the visitors with our look at the opposition, including tactical insight from Sam Tighe of Bleacher Report, who also explores how both teams will cope without key players on Wednesday night.

You can find out the latest news from the Saints Foundation, while there’s behind-the-scenes photos from training at Staplewood Campus, and our fan feature titled ‘firsts’.

Don’t forget, there are more outlets than ever before from which to purchase this season’s matchday magazine which retails on Wednesday at the reduced price of £3.

You can pre-order editions, and take out a subscription for the season from saintsmagazines.co.uk
