Austin and Targett on City return

Show/hide article…

The pair played 70 minutes and 61 minutes respectively in their first games back from injury.

“It felt good to be back. I did enjoy it and I’ve worked hard to get to this point,” Austin reflected.

“I’ve enjoyed training in the past few weeks but I had the bit between my teeth to play the game.

“I’m happy with the 70 minutes. The hard work has been put in place and I’m ready for a strong finish.”

Targett added: “I was happy to be back. We had a control of the game at 2-0 up and it’s a shame we couldn’t hold on to the win.

“Personally, it was enjoyable to be back on the pitch and get some minutes.

“At this stage I just need to give match minutes and gradually work my way back into the first-team.”

“Surprised” Puel not feeling under pressure

Show/hide article…

Defiant Saints boss Claude Puel says he is “surprised” to see speculation he could get the sack at the end of the season, and insisted he doesn’t feel under pressure.

The under-fire Frenchman came in for some strong criticism following Saints’ goalless draw against Hull City at St Mary’s last weekend, but defended his record ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Liverpool.

Puel believes that in a season where the top seven are again dominating, that a potential eighth placed finish and EFL Cup final appearance is a decent effort.

Though he accepts the frustration that his side have not scored enough goals this season, he is optimistic about the future given the development of players such as Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens under his watch.

Puel said: “I am surprised to see this because it seems for me it is an interesting season with many games with the European games, the FA Cup games and with the final at Wembley against Manchester United.

“We improve players like Redmond, like Ward-Prowse for the first time in the national team, and many players can improve.

“It was interesting work I think and it is a surprise for me to see or to read all this speculation. “It is a little particular.”

He added: “I come here for a project to continue this work, to improve all this young players and many players become starting players this year like Yoshida, Romeu, Stephens, and I think it is important to continue this work and the future of Southampton.

“We have to correct some details because we cannot allow us the best results but we are ninth on the table with all these games, all this injury, and I think the project is ok also.

Saints finished the previous three seasons in eighth, seventh and sixth, but Puel made a fair point regarding the strength of the top seven, who now look far more stable and are spending big.

They are proving impenetrable, and that could continue for some time.

When asked whether expectations were unreasonably high at Saints, Puel replied: “Perhaps because Southampton stay last season with a good position in the Premier League.

“Every season is different and for example this season we can see all the great teams in the first places. It was not this for the last season where often great teams could not do a good league.

“I think this season it is difficult for the team to find a good position. Everton, for example, tried to find a good position and it is difficult for them because all the great teams are in the first place. It is difficult. It is a different season.

“It is important to keep the way. I come here for a project and to put in place the policies of the club and to continue this work. It is not just the position on the table, not just the last result that is important.

“If we win a game fantastic and if we lose a game it is poor and not enough. My philosophy is not this.

“We work for the future, and of course we want to keep the good ambition but it is important to keep the good work and to develop the squad for the future. This is the most important.

“With all the good games you can do since the beginning of the season we are not deserved about many games, European games and also in the Premier League. In the final also we deserve other things.

“For me it’s a good way, good work, without good reward for the moment but it’s important to continue this work and not just see the position.

“We are ninth in the table at this moment with two games postponed and this is a normal position but with the quality we can put on the pitch this season we deserved other things I think.”

Despite all the noise from outside surrounding his position, Puel insists he isn’t feeling under pressure.

“No (I don’t feel under pressure) because I focus about the work and the training session and I cannot give something about speculation,” he admitted.

“I am surprised to see this or to read this, but I cannot sometimes understand this because it is important to keep this way, this work, and I repeat there are interesting games and work since the beginning of the season with the squad.

“It is important to keep our concentration about this and not different speculation.

“It was not enough against Hull City and in this game it is possible sometimes that people are unhappy but it was the same for us – for the staff and the players – and it is normal.

“After the game against Chelsea it was I think without the loss good football, quality with character, intensity and very interesting.

“This was not against Hull City the good game, without good intensity and good quality, and against a team behind with good organisation and strong defensive unit it is always difficult to find the solution.

“We need intensity, quality, on the game and it was not enough.”

The Inside Track: Liverpool

Show/hide article…

How would you sum up the mood and form at Liverpool at the moment?

The mood is buoyant after that narrow win at Watford on Monday night. It felt like a pivotal night in the club’s season.

They had the opportunity to take advantage of their top-four rivals dropping points the day before and they took it. The fact that victory was achieved courtesy of a spectacular goal from Emre Can made it all the sweeter.

Liverpool’s form hasn’t been great. They aren’t playing the free flowing football of earlier in the season but they are grinding out results.

The defeat to Crystal Palace was a blow but either side of that they have dug deep to seal away wins at Stoke, West Brom and Watford.

How important is this game in the context of the season, particularly with Champions League aspirations?

It’s huge. Liverpool’s top-four fate is in their own hands but to ensure that remains the case they need to beat Saints.

Having seen Saints keep three clean sheets against his side, what do you think Jurgen Klopp’s approach will be like?

Liverpool have struggled to break Saints down in the previous meetings this season but I don’t think Klopp will change his approach.

The Reds will be positive and play on the front foot but the manager won’t want to over-commit attacking wise for fear of getting caught out on the counter.

Adam Lallana is in contention to return to the starting line up and that should help give Liverpool more of a cutting edge in the final third.

How do you see the game going?

I can’t see there being many goals. It will be tight and nervy. But I just think Liverpool have so much more to play for at this stage of the season and that motivation should see them home. Liverpool to edge it 1-0.

Saints hunt for Anfield inspiration

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is hoping Saints will take inspiration from their EFL Cup semi-final win over Liverpool at Anfield and finally bag a top six scalp this weekend.

Saints defeated Liverpool both home and away to reach the Wembley showpiece, and beat Arsenal at the Emirates in the quarter-finals of the competition.

However, in nine attempts so far this season they have failed to notch a single win against the top six clubs in Premier League action.

Saints have three more cracks at it in an action packed finale to the season, which sees them play five games in the space of a fortnight, with Liverpool first up tomorrow.

“I don’t know why the difference between cup and Premier League games, but I think many games against the first seven teams were very interesting with good intensity, good quality, good football,” reflected Puel.

“Often a great player can do the difference against us and for us, without finding the good clinical edge to finish because we can have opportunities and play good football without a good reward.

“The clinical edge is the most difficult to prevent a goal or to score because we can have a lot of chances.

“We have for example the first team with all these opportunities to score without scoring. It is important to correct this for the future, and this good football we can do on the pitch is important to add a good clinical edge.

“We need to improve together all the squad and to find the good solution and to validate all these good performances on the pitch with a good clinical edge for the future.”

Saints certainly know Liverpool well now after three meetings already in this campaign, with two wins in the EFL Cup and a draw in the Premier League favouring Puel’s men.

“I think we know this team now and for them the same thing,” said the Saints boss.

“It’s different games and the last game was a cup game, a game away after a game at home and now the Premier League.

“They want to play the Champions League next season and it’s an important game for them at home, and for us it’s important to finish with good intensity, good quality in our games, and to take all the possibilities to win this game.

“It’s a difficult game against a good team but I am sure we can have some opportunities and situations to win this game.

“It’s important to keep the good focus against this team but we can play a fantastic game since the beginning of the season and get fantastic results also.

“It is important to have this good focus about this game.”

He added: “It’s always a good challenge. We know it’s difficult but there is always opportunity to show our level, our possibility, and it’s a big game.

“It is just to stay focussed about our game, have a good organisation and a good spirit, and when we have the ball to play our football, to try to score and have chances and to develop good football is very important and the mentality with character.

“We need character to play this team to prevent them chances, opportunities, and after to take our possibilities on the counter attack or in the play.”

James Milner wants revenge on Southampton for EFL Cup exit

Show/hide article…

James Milner says Liverpool are out for revenge this weekend after Southampton denied them a spot in the EFL Cup final earlier this season.

The Saints, who travel to Anfield for the first game of Nissan Super Sunday, beat Liverpool 2-0 over two legs and claimed a place at Wembley - where they proceeded to lose to Manchester United.

“They cost us a cup final and that hurts,” Milner told Sky Sports. “They deserved it over the two games but we need to make sure we turn that around, put in a good performance and get one back on them!”

Safe from relegation and out of the battle to qualify for Europe, Southampton should provide relatively straightforward opposition for Liverpool, who are aiming to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side have regularly struggled to up their game against teams they’ve been expected to beat this season, and Milner is expecting another tough task this weekend.

“[At this stage of the season] you’ve got teams trying to stay up or have nothing to play for so they play with a bit more freedom,” he said. "It can be a strange time of the season, every game can become really tough.

“We just want to pick up maximum points in our remaining games and we know we can do that. But every single game is tough. The best thing is to go out there and win our games, that’s all we can concentrate on.”

Milner has nearly completed a full season as a left-back for Liverpool and admitted that he hasn’t always enjoyed the role, but insists he’s happy to do it if it means staying in the team.

“It’s the first time I’ve played it in the Premier League and it’s not like getting to learn it on a Sunday with your mates,” he said. "It’s a big change but I’ve always tried to learn throughout my career and I’ve played a lot of positions anyway, so it’s just trying to do the job as well as you can.

"But it’s about whatever is best for the team. Ultimately I just want to be out there playing games and contributing. I haven’t gone to [Klopp]. He knows how I feel and asked me at the start of the season about my thoughts. I believe that once you’ve committed to something and made a decision you stick to it and do your best.

“There have been times I haven’t enjoyed it and have been frustrated, but I’m enjoying being part of this squad, we’ve got a lot of great players and I think we can be successful. I want to be a part of that.”

Virgil van Dijk, Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand potential Liverpool targets, says Phil Thompson

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will be sizing up another raid of Southampton’s squad this summer ahead of their Super Sunday showdown, says Phil Thompson.

The Reds have signed no less than five Saints over the last three summers, with Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert all arriving for over £100m.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to strengthen again this summer after failing to maintain their Premier League title chase, with securing a top-four finish the focus when Claude Puel’s men visit Anfield in Sunday’s early kick-off.

We asked Soccer Saturday pundit Thommo to pick out the potential targets from St Mary’s this summer…

I’d straight away say Van Dijk, who I have always rated. The way he plays the game would make him a perfect fit for a Klopp team. There’s always been an affiliation with Dutch players at Liverpool. I remember the 60s when we first played against Johan Cruyff’s Ajax and we were left in awe.

We obviously talk about Dirk Kuyt very highly and I think the club have a connection to that Dutch style of play. Our big issue is that the other sides in the top six will also be looking at him.

Bertrand is another one who would improve us. James Milner has been nothing short of fantastic but he’s not a natural left-back and it’s hard to see any sort of future for Alberto Moreno at the club. Bertrand is a good defender and he times his movement going forward particularly well.

There might be a bit of interest as well in Romeu, who has had an excellent season and does exactly what it says on the tin. He’s a destroyer, he’s got a great attitude and passes the ball very well. If Southampton were interested in cashing in then he’d offer us something we don’t really have at the moment.

I wind up Le Tiss up asking if the tea lady makes a good brew and what her contract is like, but it’s a compliment to them really as they’re as good as anyone around at producing players.
