Liverpool vs Southampton live score and goal updates

Show/hide article…

Costly doesn’t even cover the price of James Milner’s penalty miss for Liverpool.

If it’s counted in terms of potentially missing out on the Champions’ League, then it will not only be priced in the 10s of millions, but also in terms of the players they will miss out on during the summer transfer window.

In what was a shocking game at Anfield, as Southampton put everything behind the ball bar the kitchen sink - and presumably they only left that behind because it was plumbed in - the penalty on 65 minutes was one of the few chances the home side scratched out.

Unfortunately for Milner as stepped up, Fraser Forster was equal to it, and he plunged to his right to produce a fine save - and condemn the veteran defender to his first miss from the spot this season, after converting his previous seven for the Reds.

It was tough luck on the likeable former England man, but really, Liverpool didn’t deserve much more from a game where they seemed lacking in energy and ideas. And questions must be asked about Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bring his twin subs Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge on so late, as the pair changed the game dramatically in the few minutes they were given.

Here, our reporter David Maddock offers some observations on a dour game.

5 thing we learned from Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

It was tough luck on the likeable former England man, but really, Liverpool didn’t deserve much more from a game where they seemed lacking in energy and ideas. And questions must be asked about Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bring his twin subs Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge on so late, as the pair changed the game dramatically in the few minutes they were given.

Here, our reporter David Maddock offers some observations on a dour game.

As good as Liverpool can be, it is puzzling why teams come to Anfield these days and treat them like Real Madrid. Every home game is an exercise in breaking down massed ranks of defenders for the Reds, and Southampton were perhaps the worst culprits so far, their defence in the first half so deep they could have mined for coal. The strange thing is, Jurgen Klopp’s side have an obvious weakness in defence, which makes the ultra-negative approach even more difficult to work out.

In saying that, Liverpool were more circumspect than ever before is their feeble attempts to break the Saints down. Never have they been quite so pedestrian as the first hour in this deathly dull contest. It was heart-breaking to see Coutinho dropping deeper and deeper in search of the ball, and the likes of Lucas smash passes at him from five yards away. The key in situations like this is speed of movement and thought. They had little of either.

For Southampton, this was probably the perfect game, given the form they are in. They didn’t need to think about playing, just organising, and it looked like they’ve done plenty of that during the week. They were well drilled and strong, but you expect far more from a team that has quality in its passing and movement, and more ambition than this effort.

The big question for Jurgen Klopp, was why did it take so long to change things, when his Plan A clearly wasn’t working. He had Lallana and Sturridge on the bench, and both had shown at Watford they had minutes in their legs despite injuries and yet it was almost 70 minutes before they got a sniff of a white line to cross.

They are small margins at this level though. Liverpool created so little until the penalty, but if Fraser Forster had not produced a brilliant save from James Milner’s penalty, we’d be suggesting Klopp’s patience was justified. It wasn’t a bad spot kick, in fact it was a pretty decent one and it was a hell of a save. It kind of felt inevitable though, in keeping with what was one of the worst games at Anfield this season. By far.

Liverpool 0-0 Southampton: Forster penalty save earns Anfield point

Show/hide article…

Saints produced a battling display to hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield and ease the pressure on Claude Puel.

Liverpool surrendered their advantage in the race for Champions League football once again after failing to score against Saints for the fourth time this season.

James Milner’s first penalty failure in more than seven years proved decisive as the Saints proved adept at denying their opponents - as they had done in the reverse league encounter and the two-legged EFL Cup semi-final in January.

Liverpool’s goal drought against the south-coast club now stands at 428 minutes since Daniel Sturridge scored in the 22nd minute of a 3-2 defeat at St Mary’s in March last year.

A point may have lifted them back into third, above Manchester City, but it left the door open for fifth-placed Manchester United and Arsenal, who both have matches in hand.

Only two weeks ago Jurgen Klopp’s side were in a similar position against Crystal Palace, knowing a win would strengthen their grip on a top-four spot with games running out, but contrived to lose.

They regained the initiative with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Watford on Monday, after their chasing rivals dropped points, thanks to a goal-of-the-season contender from Emre Can, but there was to be no magical moment this time around.

Southampton, comfortable in mid-table, came with little ambition other than not to lose but Liverpool were the ones found wanting with the onus on them to break the opposition down.

They had 65 per cent possession - Saints failed to have a shot on target in 90 minutes - but the only time they looked like threatening in the first half was when Oriol Romeu was robbed by Roberto Firmino but the Brazilian’s shot was blocked by Ryan Bertrand.

The five-across-midfield sitting-deep tactic has become a familiar sight at Anfield this season but it is employed because it is effective as Liverpool, without the pace of the injured Sadio Mane, struggle to open up teams even with Philippe Coutinho, recovered from the dead leg sustained at Watford on Monday, in their side.

Such was the success of the plan 66 minutes passed before Liverpool genuinely threatened - and then it was courtesy of referee Bobby Madley who adjudged centre-back Jack Stephens had handled in a tussle with Divock Origi.

After some delaying tactics by Fraser Forster and James Ward-Prowse, which earned the midfielder a booking, the usually-reliable Milner was thwarted by the goalkeeper’s low dive to his right - his first miss in eight attempts this season and first since 2009 for Aston Villa against Bolton.

Two minutes later Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge, who have both had recent injury issues, were sent on in an attempt to rectify the situation and made an immediate difference.

Sturridge poked a shot straight at Forster after neatly side-stepping Stephens from Lallana’s pass, with the England midfielder’s vision providing a greater threat to Southampton’s massed ranks.

But as they pushed for a winner the hosts left themselves open at the back and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was lucky to escape punishment after appearing to handle just outside his area under pressure from Dusan Tadic.

However, Forster came to Southampton’s rescue in added time when he tipped over substitute Marko Grujic’s close-range header to leave the Saints fans singing “Four games and you still don’t score” at the end.

James Milner missed a penalty as Liverpool dropped a crucial two points to dent their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

The result pushes them up to third, but a top four finish is now out of their hands with Manchester City and Manchester United having games in hand.

Jack Stephens elbowed the ball away in the second half to hand Milner a chance to break the deadlock.

But Fraser Forster’s strong palm denied the Reds’ left-back and earned a deserved point for Claude Puel’s side and clinch a fourth-straight clean sheet against Jurgen Klopp’s side this term.

Had absolutely nothing to do, as Saints sat deep behind the ball

Some good defensive work, but needed to use wide position better

The pick of Liverpool’s defenders. Stood strong as to deny visitors

Another without much to do, could have stepped into midfield more

Feel for him for penalty miss. Wasn’t a bad one, and a very good save

Sat too deep to repeat the heroics of last Monday, passing pedestrian

Worked hard enough and created penalty when chipped for Origi

Not enough momentum from the middle, no trademark runs

Tried to find space, but Liverpool’s passing wasn’t slick enough for him

His touch let him down in such tight areas, needs to use strength more

Couldn’t find anything as Southampton pushed him way from danger

MOTM. Deserves the award for penalty saved that changed outcome of game

Booked. Lots of pace down right flank, and so solid at the back

Though it was clearly a penalty, was unlucky because instinctive reaction

Quiet man of the team, but he has shown leadership at Anfield this season

Booked. Powerful on the left, strong defender, gets forward well

Good on the ball, but in ultra defensive system little chance to show it

Captain’s game, so strong and full of running to blank out Reds midfield

Seems to love playing at Anfield, this type of game suits his discipline

Booked. Deserves his chance in side, and showed he has talent

Seemed to bicker more than play, and didn’t offer much going forward

Fought with Reds defenders to prove an irritant, which was his role

Liverpool showed against Southampton how much they need Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool is a city of taxi cab talk, where it is not uncommon for rumour to be presented as irrefutable fact. Perhaps no tale was more unlikely than the sighting of Zinedine Zidane in the weeks after his wife Véronique claimed she was tired of land-locked Turin and wanted to live by the sea. Zidane was promptly spotted at Formby Point, the pinewoods and then any other landmark in the area where Merseyside’s footballers tend to spend their time.

It is uncertain what came first: the story about Liverpool having lots of money to spend this summer should they confirm a place in next season’s Champions League and it being revealed that, at £50million, Virgil van Dijk was the club’s primary target, or, indeed, the sightings of Van Dijk checking out property on Victoria Road, Formby’s millionaire row – the tree-lined boulevard where Jürgen Klopp lives.

Van Dijk’s damaged ankle meant he wasn’t available for Southampton at Anfield and there are understandable questions to be asked about the virtues of Liverpool wanting to commit so much money to someone who has been injured for so long, especially since the defender’s performances had improved playing for a manager in Claude Puel whose sides are known for caution and ability to stifle opponents just like Liverpool. In their dark shirts here, Southampton’s players operated with the diligence and efficiency of dung beetles. Four times they have stopped Liverpool from scoring this season. That’s 360 minutes of football.

Klopp had warned that he would tailor Liverpool’s approach in the final weeks of the campaign, with results reflecting a more pragmatic patterns, results like 2-1, 1-0, 1-0, 1-2, 1-0 and now, 0-0. Perhaps if Liverpool had a striding figure such as van Dijk – someone who when fit hoovers up defensive space with his pace – Liverpool would be going for it a bit more, leaving more gaps in the pursuit of goals.

Without Sadio Mané’s pace and without Jordan Henderson’s setting the tempo Liverpool’s midfield needs in order to overwhelm, it seems as though Klopp has decided that patience could just about get Liverpool the outcomes they require to achieve campaign objectives.

It is a risky strategy but it might just work because games are running out for the teams chasing Liverpool, who might still be able to secure Champions League football as early as next week with a victory at West Ham.

If that were to happen, it will mean that Liverpool will have limped towards their target and that – even with disappointments like poor home results against Swansea City, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Southampton – will represent progress, without inflating expectation to such unreasonable levels that it eventually crushes the players later on. Liverpool will have never done it this way around: to seem like they could be champions, to fall away – but still move forward and get roughly to where they want to be.

Fail, though, and parallels might be drawn with Gérard Houllier’s first full season in charge, 1999/2000. Like Klopp, Houllier was also attempting to shift perceptions about the determination and resilience of his players and like Klopp, Houllier had taken full control of the team eighteen months before.

Under Houllier, Liverpool had been second with five games left to play but the goals dried up and when the season drew to a conclusion, Liverpool had failed to score again.

One of the opponents in that miserable run was Southampton who left Anfield with a 0-0 draw. Similarly, Liverpool faced a team with the spectre of relegation looming over their shoulder on the final day in Bradford City.

Two weekends from now Middlesbrough visit Merseyside and though they are almost down, they do not know they are down yet. And so, Middlesbrough could be the difference between Liverpool’s ability to sign van Dijk or not.

Liverpool 0-0 Southampton: Puel delight at dogged Liverpool draw

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was delighted with Saints’ dogged defensive display as they held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield.

It was a fourth clean sheet in four against the Reds for Saints this season, but more importantly a spirited performance full of character after they were booed off at St Mary’s the previous weekend.

Puel was understandably happy with the way his side handled the pressure but argued that the spirit of his men was no different against Liverpool than it had been when they faced Hull.

He insisted: “I said the team before this game it was not for me a bad spirit against Hull City but it was just to improve on the concentration and prepare the game to the same attitude against Liverpool or Hull City.

“We have a young team and it’s important to improve and find the good consistency on the preparation of the game. This is very important.

“I agree it was a difficult game and not enough against Hull City but it was not for me a bad spirit because they work very well on the training session every game and we show this against Liverpool.”

The point lifted Saints back into the top half of the table after results on Saturday had dragged them down to 12th.

It was also a clear indication that they are not ready to pack up for the summer just yet.

“It was important,” agreed Puel. “I think after our game against Hull City we had to correct something and I am satisfied of course with this game because it was a strong game, fantastic game, with a strong defensive unit.

“It was important to play like this against this team. We know this team has good players and good qualities.

“Sometimes perhaps we can recover some ball and start with another quality but it was difficult because they can do good pressing after the loss of the ball and it was difficult for us to make some counter attack.

“It was fantastic work from the squad because we defend very well with good structure, good organisation, good discipline and it’s a good reward.”

Saints have beaten Liverpool twice this season – both matches in the EFL Cup as they reached the final – while they have achieved a pair of goalless draws in the Premier League.

“It’s a good way this season against Liverpool this season to win, to draw, four clean sheets,” reflected Puel.

“It’s a fantastic job against this team and I hope we can continue this against other good teams like Arsenal next game and Manchester United for example.

“It will be important but it will be other games, other intensity, and it’s important now to recover after this game. We will see on Wednesday.”

Jurgen Klopp accuses Southampton’s Fraser Forster of unsportsmanlike conduct

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said that Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s attempts to intimidate James Milner before the penalty he missed was “not how sportsman should work”, after a frustrating draw which leaves the team still uncertain of a top four finish.

Forster stood over Milner and spoke to him as he placed the ball on the penalty spot, before appearing to put a divot of turf on the spot, whilst two members of the visiting side were also booked for dissent and time-wasting, having been justifiably penalised for Jack Stephens’ handball. Milner’s miss was the first time in nine years he has failed to convert from the spot.

Klopp – who was also clearly frustrated by Southampton’s negative mindset – said of the gamesmanship: “I really don’t like it to make a story of it. You saw what they did. Why do you need my say on it? On one side you say it is very smart because [Milner] missed and on the other not sportsmanship. Two yellow cards for them and with the time delay, I don’t know how long Forster needed for his kicks, four minutes, that is ambitious. But I have nothing to do with it. Whatever I say we look like bad losers.”

Referee Bobby Madley booked James Ward-Prowse for taking a bottle out of Forster’s net to waste time after kick was awarded, Cedric Soares went into the book for dissent and Forster was slow to leave the six-yard box for his goal line though, though was not booked.

Klopp also said the dryness of the Anfield pitch – which is being relaid this summer - had been a problem. “We gave all the water we had and after 15 minutes it was really dry, the wind and a little bit… It was difficult,” he observed. “You could see it – a lot passes you thought ‘why are they playing this?’ but it was difficult. In a possession game you need to have the best, if possible, in a home game especially, the best circumstances. Today we couldn’t have this.”

Klopp’s prime frustration, though, will be his side’s failure to score in 360 minutes of football this season – despite 54 shots on goal in the teams’ two Premier League games and two legs of a League Cup semi-final.

“Southampton played in a specific way,” Klopp said. “Some people will say everyone will play like this but they will not. We needed to score. They were very disciplined, very deep. It is all about scoring one and we couldn’t do this. It made life not easy.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel rejected the criticism of Klopp by saying that the penalty should not have been awarded.

“I think this penalty is harsh,” he said. “Jack turns and the ball falls in his arms but it was too harsh to concede a goal against this penalty. It was an important save. For me it was not a penalty. On the other side we could have the sending off of [Simon] Mignolet when he touch the ball outside his box."

Only when Klopp sent on substitutes Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana did Liverpool begin to show more creativity, and the German admitted that his side may now need to win their last two games, at West Ham and then at home to Middlesbrough.

“Before [today] we needed three [wins] and now I would say two would not be bad but now we concentrate on West Ham. They are in a positive season finishing mood. We have to try and get a result somehow. You saw the[m beat] Tottenham . We are still fighting and nobody gave up. We have one point more than we had before. The best manager I had and the most experienced in these situations said at the end of the season this point will be really welcome. We will see. We have to analyse this game. We will do it one more time.”
