Are you a Saints fan heading to Fulham? Here’s what you need to know (including friendly pubs)

Show/hide article…

THOUSANDS of fans are set to march on to London as Saints take on Fulham in the FA Cup.

Despite a dire run of form, police expect more than 4,500 fans to make the trip to the capital for Saturday’s 3pm kickoff.

Under-fire boss Mauricio Pellegrino has said he will try to use his best 11 to win the game and see Saints into the next round of the cup.

SaintsFC Cop has taken to Twitter to give some advice to dedicated fans travelling to London tomorrow.

The first problem for many supporters will be travel, with a replacement bus service running between Southampton Central Station and Eastleigh.

Nearer the ground, SaintsFC Cop has recommended a number of pubs for fans to head to and get a friendly reception.

He wrote: "The Temperance, The Eight Bells and the King Head welcome away fans, these are very close to the tube station and closest to the ground, however they are normally the first to fill up.

"On the Putney side of the river, the Dukes Head, the Boat House, the Coat and Badge also take away fans, the Wetherspoons is now Revolution bar.

"Alcohol is served at the stadium.

There are also water utilities works taking place which mean that the southbound lane of Fulham Palace Road at the junction with Telgarth Road will be closed.

The last time Saints took on Fulham at Craven Cottage goals from Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez eased Southampton to a 0-3 win on February 1, 2014.

Fulham v Southampton preview: Saints face tricky test at Craven Cottage

Show/hide article…

Southampton will look to get their season moving in the right direction with a win over Championship side Fulham in the FA Cup.

Saints have not won in nine games and are slipping towards trouble in the Premier League.

However, Mauricio Pellegrino has a strong cup pedigree having led Alaves to the Copa del Rey final in 2016.

Craven Cottage is becoming a fortress once again for Fulham, who have won four of their last matches there.

Fulham winger Floyd Ayite is set to miss the game. Ayite limped off with a suspected hamstring injury during the 4-1 victory over Ipswich on Tuesday and could face another spell on the sidelines.

But fellow wide man Lucas Piazon is in line for his first start since August after a broken leg.

David Button is set for a run-out in goal while boss Slavisa Jokanovic will be considering further changes.

Defender Jeremy Pied has been added to Southampton’s injury list ahead of their third-round clash.

French full-back Pied, who played the full 90 minutes as Saints lost to Crystal Palace on Tuesday, has suffered a leg problem, joining fellow defenders Wesley Hoedt (concussion) and Cedric Soares (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Top scorer Charlie Austin has completed a three-game ban but will continue to be absent due to a hamstring issue.

Fulham will be hosting Southampton in the FA Cup for the first time since a third-round replay in January 1999, when Barry Hayles scored a 85th minute winner at Craven Cottage.

The Cottagers have lost three of their last four FA Cup games at home against opposition from a higher division (W1), although they picked up a 4-1 win against Hull City in the fourth round last season.

Southampton have progressed past lower league opponents in 17 of their last 18 FA Cup ties, although the last two occasions have seen the Saints taken to a replay.

Each of Southampton’s last six FA Cup third-round matches (excl. replays) have seen both teams score, with 25 goals scored in total (4.2 goals per game).

I think this could be the final game for Mauricio Pellegrino. The only player he’s lost is Virgil van Dijk so there are no real excuses for how disappointing Southampton have been.

Manolo Gabbiadini doesn’t look like he knows what the manager wants from him and I think they’d take Ronald Koeman back in a heartbeat, although I’m not sure the fans would be happy with that.

Barnes makes Yeovil Town loan move

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old has linked up with The Glovers, who currently occupy 20th position in League Two under the stewardship of Darren Way.

Barnes has scored four times in 12 Premier League 2 appearances so far this season for Saints’ Under-23 side, as well as featuring in the Checkatrade Trophy.

He makes the move to Huish Park, where fellow Saints striker Olufela Olomola recently enjoyed a successful loan spell, in order to gain valuable experience in the Football League and could make his debut in the FA Cup third round tie against Bradford City tomorrow.

Shearer, Vieira, Keane? Which Premier League club needs a helping hand from a former player?

Show/hide article…

Bayern Munich could be forced to play a formerly retired goalkeeper to ease their current injury crisis.

First choice ‘keeper Manuel Neuer has aggravated the foot injury he originally suffered in September and second-choice Sven Ulreich sprained his finger while on warm weather training in Doha, Qatar.

In order to solve their selection headache, boss Jupp Heynckes has turned to former youth team coach Tom Starke who came out of retirement in the summer for the club.

Here at talkSPORT, it got us thinking about the clubs who could do with dragging one of their ex-stars back into action to improve their current team.

We’ve compiled a list of those clubs in need of some help from their former stars, so just click on the right arrow above to see the rest of the gallery.
