Big night ahead for Winchester City as Saints go marching in

Show/hide article…

WINCHESTER boss Craig Davis says his City youngsters have “earned the right” to face Saints in tomorrow’s Southampton Senior Cup quarter-final at the Simplyhealth City Ground (Thursday, 7.45pm).

Having battled past AFC Stoneham and Nursling in the previous rounds with a largely teenage side, Davis believes it’s only fair to keep faith with as many young guns as possible in a prestige fixture against Radhi Jaidi’s under-23s.

It means the likes of IK Hill – already a Southern League regular, Ben Sunley, Josh Corner and Harvey Clark should all get a look-in, along with 16-year-old goalkeeper Josh Toombs who made the final trial for the Under-18 England Schoolboy squad last weekend.

Davis said: “This will be a great night for the club and our young lads will once again have the chance to show what they can do.

“They’ve earned the right to this game. They’ve been superb in battling through two rounds so far and they deserve it.

“As a club, we want to strengthen that group as much as we can.”

Mixed in with the youngsters will be a handful of senior players in need of playing time.

“We’ll include five from the first-team squad and that’s likely to be the subs from the first-team game at Paulton last weekend,” explained Davis, whose side are in with a shout of the Evo-Stik South West play-offs.

“We’ve got an important game at home to Larkhall less than 48 hours after the Saints game and we can’t afford to risk any likely starters.

“But we’ll give it a good go tomorrow and we’re looking forward to the experience of testing the lads against professional players from Southampton. We’re buzzing for it. It’s a prestige fixture and we’re honoured to be playing them.”

Saints have returned to the competition this season to sprinkle some stardust on the centenary celebrations.

So far they have beaten BTC Southampton 6-0 and QK Southampton 12-0 to ease through to the last eight – both games played at Staplewood.

“This is the first away game they’ve had and we’re doing all we can to spring clean the place ready for them!” smiled Davis. “Everyone’s excited about it. It should be a good occasion.”

Southampton under-23s had been due to play their Blackburn Rovers counterparts in Premier League 2 on Monday, but it was postponed due to a frozen pitch at the Leyland County Ground. A new date will be announced in due course.

The young Saints have now had more than a two-week break in fixtures and Jaidi said: “The players have had a good rest. But, from a coaching point of view, we don’t rest because you’re constantly thinking about the season going forward and reflecting.”

Admission at Winchester tomorrow is just £5 for adults and free for children under 16.

Saints transfer rumour mill: Striker on St Mary’s radar

Show/hide article…

The transfer rumour mill is in overdrive once again, so the Daily Echo is helping all Saints fans keep tabs on who the club has been linked to.

Below we’ll list all the rumours about who could be joining and leaving St Mary’s this January, as Saints try to improve their squad as they battle against relegation.

Theo Walcott is Saints’ main target this month and the club are understood to be working hard to get a deal done for the Arsenal man.

The latest name to be linked with a move to St Mary’s is Monaco striker Guido Carillo.

New rumours will be added to the top of each list. If you come across a rumour that is not listed here, email it to echosport@dailyecho.co.uk.

Linked to a move away from Saints:

Last year Southampton dipped into the free agent market to sign defender Martin Caceres. The Uruguay international made one appearance for the Saints, starting in a 2-1 away win over Middlesbrough on the 13th May. Here’s a list of some of the current free agents Saints could sign this month.

Forster’s doing everything he can to help – McCarthy

Show/hide article…

ALEX McCarthy revealed that Fraser Forster is “doing everything” he can to help him as he settles in as Saints’ first choice goalkeeper.

Having played every minute of the club’s opening 21 games, Forster, who had come in for flack from supporters for his performances, was dropped and replaced by McCarthy for the trip to Manchester United on December 30.

The 28-year-old has now played three consecutive games, keeping two clean sheets (including one at Old Trafford) in three outings, and is grateful to Forster and third choice goalie Stuart Taylor for their guidance as he beds into the starting XI.

“I don’t think you’ll find many goalkeepers who do that,” he said, when asked if he and Forster had discussed the change between the sticks.

"Training is the same; me and Stu while Fraser was playing were doing everything to help him.

“Now I’m playing they’re doing everything they can to help me; we’ve got a tight group here with Dave (goalkeeping coach Dave Watson) and it all works well.”

The former Reading stopper, who joined Saints for £2m from Crystal Palace in August 2016, has come into Mauricio Pellegrino’s struggling side at a desperate time.

Following nine successive Premier League games without a victory, Saints sit precariously above the relegation zone with goal difference alone separating them and the bottom three.

Pellegrino, who led his team to a much-needed victory in the FA Cup third round at Fulham on Saturday, has tried to resolve the team’s faults.

The under pressure 46-year-old has pointed to a lack of confidence which has seen Saints drop too deep and concede costly goals.

McCarthy is adamant, however, that Saints are not being inhibited on the pitch by their concerning league position ahead of a trip to Watford – a side who have lost six of their last seven league games – on Saturday (3pm).

“No, not at all,” he said.

"It’s just a dip we’ve had but hopefully with the result at the weekend we can crack on.

"I don’t think any of the lads will say that’s all we’re thinking about.

“I wouldn’t say we’re out there thinking about it; we’re just trying to do as best as possible.”

He added: "It is frustrating for the fans and they want to see goals and three points as much as we do.

“We’ve had a dip but hopefully we can turn that around now and go on a run.”

Pellegrino is coming under increasing pressure from the fans as Saints struggle under his leadership, but McCarthy insists that the team are behind their besieged boss.

“Yes, 100 per cent,” he said. “If everyone is pulling in the right direction together it makes things a lot easier.”

McCarthy made his Premier League debut for Saints at Old Trafford and hasn’t looked back in his subsequent appearances against Crystal Palace and Fulham.

He said: "I’m happy with the way it’s gone. It’s nice to get two clean sheets – I’ve obviously had a win, a loss and a draw.

“Hopefully we can start getting more wins now and move our way up the league.”

The 6ft4in stopper believes the third round victory at the Cottagers last Saturday will lift the team.

“It’s a massive positive and it was good to get a win again at the weekend,” he said. “There were a lot of positives we can take from that and hopefully we can get three points against Watford on Saturday.”

Inside Track: Watford

Show/hide article…

How has the season been so far for Watford?

Up and down, rarely at the same time. Watford began the season very well, and were fourth after they beat Arsenal in October. But, since then, they’ve been on a steady decline and, before Saturday, they’d lost six out of seven. Injuries haven’t helped, but they have looked low on confidence too. That said, there have only been a couple of games all season where Watford haven’t been competitive.

How is the team playing right now, in terms of its style and approach?

The style hasn’t changed too much from the one we saw at Southampton earlier in the season. Watford don’t create a wealth of chances, but they try to be compact out of possession and break with pace. Star-man Richarlison has looked jaded at times recently and the Hornets have four defenders out with long-term injuries, while up front Troy Deeney and Andre Gray both have yet to hit form. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Tom Cleverley are the driving heart of the team, but even their form has dipped over Christmas. All things considered, they’re doing alright to be where they are over the course of the season so far.

How big is this game for them?

Not as big as it is for Southampton, but still pretty big. Beating Bristol City in the cup last weekend was imperative, but even then people were already looking towards this game to get the Premier League season back on track. Watford have thrown away six points in the last five minutes of games during December alone, and they need to start rebuilding their fragile confidence. Winning is more about that than about league position at this stage.

Who have been the team’s most influential players?

On his day, Richarlison is a match for most wingers in the Premier League, and he can score too, but the goals have dried up over the past couple of months. In midfield, Doucouré is a box-to-box behemoth who gets the side looking forward and rarely gives the ball away – leading to a helplessly catchy chant. Andre Carrillo, on the other wing, has been a slow burner, but he’s got two goals and an assist in the last few weeks and he’s looking at his best right now.

Is there anyone else who you think will be key to them this week?

If, by some miracle, they can bring back Kiko Femenia or Will Hughes, who have both been out with injury, or even Craig Cathcart, whose hip problem has restricted him to only one game this season, that will help them no end. Femenia was my player of the season at right-back before he was injured against Crystal Palace. His crossing, pace and technical skills from right-back have been sorely missed.
