Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool offering Southampton ace better deal than Chelsea and Man City

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Yahoo! Sport, who claim the Reds’ financial package is driving the Dutchman’s desire to head to Anfield.

Van Dijk’s future has been the subject of widespread speculation for the best part of a year following an impressive stint at Southampton.

Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Everton have all been credited with interest in signing him to bolster their defences.

Van Dijk saw a potential move to Merseyside break down in June after Liverpool were accused of tapping him up.

Liverpool Transfer News: Barca jet in for £120m Coutinho talk, Van Dijk update, Mor latest

Show/hide article…

The incredible goal had the stands on their feet

Barcelona bosses have flown to Liverpool in an attempt to secure a £120m deal for Philippe Coutinho.

A delegation of three Barca officials - Oscar Grau, Raul Sanllehi and Javier Bordas - jetted in to England last night.

But Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have told them that they are wasting their time because the Brazilian playmaker is not for sale.

Liverpool have already rejected a bid of £72m for their star man but Barca are understood to be ready to offer a deal worth up to £120m.

The 25-year-old is keen on a move to the Nou Camp but will not hand in a transfer request at Anfield.

I hope to adapt quickly, says Lemina

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old, who joined from Juventus for a club-record fee, has heard a lot about English football and is now ready to experience it for himself.

“I am really excited,” started Lemina.

“I have a lot of friends from France who are here and they have explained to me what it’s like to play in the Premier League. I am really excited to be playing in stadiums in the Premier League this season.

“It is a different league and I hope that I adapt quickly to it because I know that it is a league where everything goes quickly. I know that the team will help me lots to get used to it.”

As well as hearing a lot about the Premier League, Lemina also admitted that the positive reviews he had heard about Saints helped to lure him to the south coast.

The central midfielder was impressed by the club’s ambition and wants to help to continue to push Saints forward.

“The aims this year are the same as they were last season,” he started.

“We want to finish high up the table whether that be sixth, seventh or eight place and why not challenge for the Europa League.

“I’ve seen that the club is very ambitious and we want to stay on this upward path.”

The Premier League signings outside the big six to look out for

Show/hide article…

The arrivals of Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette may have stolen the headlines but there have been plenty more big signings this summer.

Premier League new-boys Brighton and Huddersfield and the returning Newcastle are among the teams to have splashed the cash in a bid to strengthen their ranks.

Ahead of the new top-flight season, which kicks off this Friday night, Sportsmail lists signings outside the big six to look out for this campaign.

The Seagulls, preparing for their first season in the Premier League, parted with £6million to bring in goalkeeper Ryan from Valencia.

The 25-year-old, who has 35 caps for Australia, agreed a five-year deal and will replace David Stockdale, who left the Amex Stadium to join Birmingham.

Ryan was once linked with Liverpool and will be tasked with helping Chris Hughton’s side avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

He was the club’s record signing at the time of his arrival, but that was smashed again when Davy Propper signed this week in a deal which could rise to £10m.

They broke their club transfer record again to sign Propper from PSV Eindhoven in a deal which could rise to £10m.

The Holland midfielder signed a four-year contract after a medical with the Premier League club on Monday.

Propper joins the likes of Markus Suttne, Pascal Gross, Mathias Normann and Izzy Brown as new signings on the south coast this summer.

The 25-year-old joined PSV from Vitesse Arnhem in 2015, and featured in the team that won the 2015-16 Eredivisie title.

Sean Dyche has added four new players to his squad this summer, one of which is former Chelsea youngster Jack Cork.

Cork — who has previously enjoyed two loan spells with the Clarets — arrived at Turf Moor from Swansea in an £8m deal.

The deal could increase to £10m should the central midfielder trigger additional clauses.

Despite narrowly avoiding relegation last season, the Eagles haven’t been as busy as expected in the window so far.

However, they have bolstered their defensive ranks with the £8m signing of Riedewald from Ajax — one of two new arrivals at Selhurst Park this summer.

The 20-year-old defender has been reunited with Eagles boss Frank de Boer who gave him his first-team debut at Ajax in 2013.

The Terriers broke their transfer record for the second time in the space of a week last month to sign Mounie from Montpellier.

The Benin international forward penned a four-year contact with the Premier League new boys for a fee in the region of £11.5m.

Huddersfield previously smashed their club record on June 30, when Aaron Mooy arrived from Manchester City for £10m.

Leicester City made defensive midfielder Iborra their second summer signing after agreeing a deal with Sevilla.

The Foxes put their faith in the 29-year-old Spaniard by giving him a four-year deal and paying out a transfer fee of around £15m.

Iborra, who stands at 6ft 3in, had spent four years with Sevilla and played both legs against Leicester in their Champions League last-16 clash last season.

Newcastle manager boss Rafa Benitez finally landed his man when Lejeune joined in an £8.7m deal from Eibar.

The 26-year-old centre back had been on Benitez’s radar since he joined Villarreal in 2011.

He made a move to bring the Frenchman to St James’ Park at the end of last season and the deal was completed at the beginning of last month.

Southampton signed Poland Under 21 international Bednarek from Lech Poznan in a deal worth £5.7m — their first summer arrival.

The Saints saw off interest from German sides Hannover and Freiburg to secure the 21-year-old centre back’s signature.

Bednarek represented his country in the Under-21 European Championship and was sent off against England in their group-stage meeting.

The Saints’ second signing in this transfer window saw them break their club record, with Lemina arriving from Juventus in an £18m move.

Juventus confirmed in a statement on their official website the deal was worth €17m (£15.6m), which could increase by a further €3m (£2.77m).

The 23-year-old, who won Serie A twice with Juve, has agreed a five-year deal — and decided on St Mary’s despite being wanted by Stoke City and West Ham.

With the departure of Cork to Burnley, Swansea City bolstered their midfield ranks by signing Las Palmas midfielder Mesa for £11m.

The 28-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year deal at the Liberty Stadium.

Mesa, who spent seven years at Las Palmas, is now the third most expensive player in Swansea’s history, behind only Wilfried Bony and last season’s £15m signing Borja Baston.

England U21 international midfielder Will Hughes moved to the Premier League this summer to join Watford from Derby County.

Hughes signed a five-year deal at Vicarage Road, having long been linked with a few top-flight teams.

Hughes came through the youth ranks at Pride Park and made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2011. Though still only 22, Hughes has made 187 senior club appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Watford pulled off a coup with the £11.2m signing of exciting Brazilian forward Richarlison on a five-year deal.

Chelsea had also made enquiries for the highly-rated 20-year-old from Fluminense while Ajax had previously agreed personal terms on a four-year contract.

Richarlison is a pacy forward who can play on the wing and cuts inside, scoring 10 goals in 21 league games last season.

Chelsea looked to have stolen a march on Ajax last month but Watford stepped in and the Brazil U20 international opted for Vicarage Road.

West Brom completed the £12m signing of Rodriguez from Southampton on a four-year deal.

The forward, who has been capped once by England, scored 35 goals in an injury-affected five-year spell on the south coast.

Rodriguez, 28, moves to the Black Country in search of more first-team football and becomes the Baggies’ joint-second most expensive player in their history.

Could Alexandre Lacazette continue Lyon goal ratio to top Premier League scoring charts?

Show/hide article…

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette would claim the Golden Boot and score a Premier League record of 40 goals this season - if he plays every game and replicates his goal ratio at Lyon last term.

The 26-year-old scored 28 goals from 2,408 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, although 10 of those came from the penalty spot, and would have scored 40 if he recorded that ratio during a 38-game Premier League season.

That haul would surpass the league record of 34 set by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer in 1994 and 1995, both achieved during 42-game seasons.

Sky Sports calculated the 2016/17 league goal ratios for every current Premier League striker who played more than 500 minutes in their respective league, to work out how many goals each player would score if they maintained those ratios and played every minute of every game in this coming Premier League season.

Reigning Golden Boot winner Harry Kane would surpass his tally of 29 and hit a career-high 39 goals for Tottenham - having only played 2,531 minutes during 30 appearances last season.

New Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata would match Kane on 39 goals if he maintains his Real Madrid ratio and secures a regular starting place ahead of Michy Batshuayi.

Gabriel Jesus would finish the season as the Premier League’s fourth top scorer with 37 goals, ahead of team-mate Sergio Aguero in seventh place on 28 goals.

Next up is Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle, who scored 23 goals in 2,145 minutes to help the Magpies achieve automatic promotion from the Championship last season.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud - who has been linked with a move away from the Emirates after the signing of fellow countryman Lacazette - would rank sixth on 34 goals.

Both France internationals outscore Alexis Sanchez, who only has one year left on his Arsenal contract, having ended last season as the Gunners’ top scorer with 24 goals and playing every league game.

Manchester United’s £90m blockbuster signing Romelu Lukaku would end the season on 26 goals - joint with new Leicester acquisition Kelechi Iheanacho.

Swansea striker Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, would outscore team-mate Fernando Llorente on 23 goals - if he can maintain his form of 23 goals from 3,424 minutes in the Championship for Bristol City last term.

Brighton’s Glenn Murray would net 23 goals, ahead of Diego Costa - who would only score 22 from 38 games, but looks unlikely to play for Chelsea again after transfer speculation linking him to former club Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere in the top 20, Southampton’s Charlie Austin would also score 22 after suffering long-term injuries last season, while West Ham’s new signing Chicharito and Everton new boy Sandro Ramirez would both register 21 - ahead of Brighton’s Tomer Hemed and Bournemouth’s Josh King on 21 and 20 goals, respectively.

Check out the table below to see the top 20 hauls - if each striker replicated their goal ratio from last season and played every minute of every game.

Sky vs BT Sport: How big rivals match up

Show/hide article…

When the Premier League returns on Friday, a very modern rivalry will be renewed between Sky Sports and BT Sport.

Sky’s hold on football rights has been loosened in recent years with the emergence of BT.

So which broadcaster offers what for football fans over the land in the coming season? Sportsmail breaks it down.

WHAT PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHES HAVE THEY GOT?

SKY: Sky have the Friday night slot, which for the first time in Premier League history will kick-off the season this week when Arsenal host Leicester. Kelly Cates presents the opener from the ground at the Emirates, instead of the studio, alongside Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

They also broadcast matches kicking off at 12.30pm Saturday, 1.30pm and 4pm Sunday and Monday night. They will broadcast 126 league games over the course of the season.

Overall, Sky own five out of seven Premier League packages on offer.

BT: By comparison, BT will broadcast 42 games exclusively live through the other two packages they hold.

They show the late games on Saturday, at 5.30pm, and occasional midweek games. The £5.136bn deal for Premier League rights between Sky and BT means each game costs £10.2m.

WHAT ELSE DO THEY HAVE?

SKY: The Football League, EFL Cup and EFL Trophy make up the rest of Sky’s coverage on English soil. The Scottish Premiership, Scottish FA Cup and Northern Irish Premiership will also be shown.

La Liga coverage is the jewel in the crown of Sky’s European shows. They also have rights to the Dutch Eredivisie and Coppa Italia. Beyond that, Sky shows Chinese Super League, Major League Soccer and World Cup qualifiers for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and other nations aside from England.

BT: For European football, BT is without question the place to be. They will broadcast all 351 Champions League and Europa League games live. They also have rights to exclusive FA Cup matches, the Community Shield, Women’s Super League and National League. They share the Scottish Premiership with Sky and also show the Scottish League Cup.

BT also show extensive coverage of the European Leagues with the French Ligue 1, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and Portuguese Primera Liga. Outside of Europe, BT show the Brazilian championship and the Australian A-League.

WHO ARE THE PRESENTERS AND PUNDITS?

SKY: David Jones front Sky’s coverage, while Simon Thomas also presents some of the Saturday matches.

Jones is mainly seen on Sunday and Monday - where he is joined by pundits Neville and Carragher for Monday Night Football.

Over the course of last season the trio were joined by other notable guests such as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Claudio Ranieri, who spoke out for the first time since being sacked by Leicester.

In terms of pundits, BT’s list includes new addition Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Steve McManaman, Robbie Savage, Martin Keown, Owen Hargreaves, Glen Hoddle, Ian Wright and Jermaine Jenas.

WHO ARE THE MAIN COMMENTATORS?

SKY: Martin Tyler is the main man in the gantry for Sky, who also have Rob Hawthorne and Alan Parry. Neville and Carragher have, on occasion, joined as co-commentator.

BT: Lead commentary is provided by Darren Fletcher or Ian Darke, with an array of former Premier League players sat next to them. Michael Owen, Robbie Savage, Steve McManaman, Trevor Francis and Martin Keown have all co-commentate.

WHAT DO THEY DO FOR SATURDAY, 3PM?

SKY: The Saturday slot is synonymous for Soccer Saturday on Sky, fronted by Jeff Stelling. It starts at 12pm with build-up focusing on the Premier League.

Later, Sky broadcast in full the game of the day from the Premier League at 8.30pm, followed by the match choice at 10.30pm where viewers can see extended highlights from a match of their choosing.

BT: The equivalent is BT Sport Score, presented by Mark Pougatch. Like Soccer Saturday, it announces goals from over the country as they happen but begins at 2.45pm.

WHAT IS NEW FOR THIS SEASON?

SKY: The most notable alteration to Sky’s coverage is the introduction of the Premier League channel. Pardew’s arrival as a pundit coincides with Niall Quinn’s exit.

BT: Unfortunately, BT Sport’s Sunday night European Football Show is no more.

HOW MUCH DOES IT ALL COST?

SKY: The Sky Sports bundle can currently be purchased from a starting cost of £40 a month. It eventually rises to £49.50.

BT: Without signing up for BT broadband, it costs £22.99 a month.

P.S. HOW DO TERRESTRIAL CHANNELS SHAPE UP?

Match of the Day remains on the BBC in its trademark Saturday night slot, followed by a Sunday morning repeat. On Sunday, BBC will continue to show Match of the Day 2.

The FA Cup is shared between the BBC and BT, while ITV show England matches. The latter also has rights for one more season to broadcast the Champions League highlights show, as well as the Europa League.

As for the football league, highlights are currently broadcast on Saturday nights by Channel 5.

Virgil Van Dijk to Arsenal: Gunners should sign Liverpool transfer target - Kevin Campbell

Show/hide article…

At least that’s the verdict of former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell as speculation around the Southampton star’s future rumbles on.

Van Dijk is expected to leave St. Mary’s this summer even though Saints insist that he’s not for sale.

And Liverpool are at the front of the queue to sign the 26-year-old, despite being forced to officially end their pursuit of him in June amid tapping up claims.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been mooted as potential destinations for Van Dijk should Southampton allow him to leave.
