Redmond praises Bertrand influence

Show/hide article…

Southampton forward Nathan Redmond believes his relationship with Ryan Bertrand is continuing to develop and grow as the games go by.

Redmond is flourishing in his role on the left side in a 4-2-3-1 system, scoring twice against Watford in the 4-3 victory.

And Redmond reserved praise for his teammate after helping Saints to back-to-back Premier League successes.

He said: “It’s important when you have a strong group of players around and with Ryan behind me.

“He’s always in my ear if I do something good or bad! To have someone strong like behind me is a good feeling and you know defensively you have a little bit less to do.

“We’re building a strong relationship and it’s showing.”

Puel: A win was vital

Show/hide article…

Saturday’s game, at Vicarage Road, was one of only two that the team is due to play during March.

That is because next weekend’s originally-scheduled meeting with Manchester United has been postponed, due to the Reds’ FA Cup involvement, while the visit to Spurs in two weeks is followed by an international break.

“It’s difficult to stay two weeks now without playing,” said Puel, after the thrilling 4-3 win over the Hornets.

"We will wait two weeks to play away at Tottenham and, after that, it is another two weeks with the international break. This is very, very difficult.

“We have only two games this month, after playing every three days since the beginning of the season – it’s crazy.”

Had Saints not beaten Watford – a result that moved them up to tenth in the Premier League – Puel believes the table could have ended up having a much less satisfactory appearance.

“It was important to win,” he said. "For example, next week we cannot play, but the other teams can.

“Without a good success [against Watford] and the possibility to play the next week against Manchester United, we would see different teams before us on the table, so it was very important to win.”

Nathan Redmond says playing for Southampton is a pleasure

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond is revelling playing for Southampton - even if team-mate Ryan Bertrand is giving him earache.

Redmond scored twice as Saints recovered from their EFL Cup final loss to Manchester United by beating Watford 4-3 at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets struggled to cope with Saints’ pace and movement, with Dusan Tadic and Manolo Gabbiadini - for the sixth time in four games - also on target.

Saints were deserving winners, although they needed two goals in the final seven minutes to prevail.

Redmond is enjoying a fruitful left-sided partnership with Bertrand, the former Chelsea left back, so much so that the former Norwich winger has been linked with an England call-up this month.

‘It’s a joy to play in (this team),’ Redmond told saintsfc.co.uk.

'We’ve got good players. Dusan gives us creativity and Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) with his delivery.

'It helps when players like myself are driving with the ball and you see Manolo running off and Dusan coming into pockets.

'With Ryan behind me, he’s always in my ear if I do something good or if I do something bad; sometimes I can’t do any good.

'To have someone strong like that behind me, it’s a good feeling to know that defensively you’ve got a little bit less to do and gives me the freedom to go forward and enjoy myself.

‘(We are) building a strong relationship down that side and it’s showing.’

Redmond’s strikes were his first Premier League goals since October and in any competition since January’s League Cup semi-final first leg at Liverpool.

He added: 'I haven’t scored since the Liverpool game so to get two I’m delighted, but more important was to bounce back from the Wembley defeat.

‘It’s a bit of a relief and we focus on the next challenge now.’

For the second successive game, Watford led inside the opening few minutes but could not capitalise.

Troy Deeney, who scored a third-minute penalty in the 1-1 draw with West Ham, struck after four minutes against Saints, who then took a half-time lead through Tadic and Redmond.

Stefano Okaka levelled with 11 minutes remaining and, after Gabbiadini and Redmond took Saints 4-2 ahead, Abdoulaye Doucoure scored in stoppage time to set up a nervy conclusion.

‘It seems at the minute like we’ve got to score 10 to win a game,’ Deeney said on watfordfc.com.

'We just don’t seem to defend well at the minute so we need to sort that out.

'We started two games now - two goals in three minutes - and just seem to retreat all the time.

‘I think personally we need to start taking responsibility to go for the second and third, instead of trying to hold out and hit them on the counter attack.’

Deeney’s goal was his 100th in the league for Watford and took him fourth in the club’s all-time goalscorer list with 105.

‘Personally (I am) in a good run of form scoring goals,’ he added after his ninth of the season.

‘We just keep losing, so it’s a bit frustrating. I want to win games.’

We should have killed it off, says Tadić

Show/hide article…

Tadić played an integral role for Claude Puel’s men, levelling things at 1-1 with a controlled finish, before adding two assists.

But despite another goal-laden display away from home, the Serbian playmaker felt they can still do more to improve.

“I think we had very good moments, but bad moments at the beginning of the game and at the start of the second-half but I think we deserved it and were the better team,” said Tadić

“We know we have the quality to hurt every opponent but we need to be killers and not give our opponents chance to come back.

“At 2-1 we had some opportunities to get a third goal, and we also need to do more in defending all together so that we don’t concede.

“But it’s nice to change the system and then in two games of this competition we have scored eight goals which hasn’t happened for a long time.”
