The Inside Track: Saints vs West Ham

Show/hide article…

What has West Ham’s form been like recently, and how is the mood there?

It is fair to say that the form has been up and down. Since the turn of the year they have lost unluckily at home to Manchester United and been thrashed twice by Man City at home – 5-0 and 4-0. But, in between those two embarrassing home defeats by Pep Guardiola and his team, they managed back-to-back wins over Crystal Palace at home and Middlesbrough away, which has hauled them into mid-table along with the Saints. In terms of the mood in the camp, things have certainly improved now that the Dimitri Payet situation has been resolved. The rest of the squad did not take kindly to him refusing to play, and he kept himself very separate from them. His strike action seemed to have galvanised the rest of the squad and all seemed to be going well until the game against City on Wednesday night.

What is the style of play and approach like right now?

Slaven Bilić’s team still look to play some attractive football, but, with Andy Carroll as the pivot for the whole team, there is plenty of knocking the ball into him and players working off him. The manager, like many others in the Premier League this season, had been playing with three centre-backs, but he now seems to have reverted to a flat back four, which gives them more balance. However, after the City thrashing, he may well be rethinking that strategy for Southampton,

How important is this game to West Ham, given the proximity of both teams in the table?

I think that the team need to bounce back from their midweek drubbing and get back to the form which saw them beat Palace and Boro. Both teams are in mid-table, so the importance of the game is debatable. Southampton have other things on their minds with the EFL Cup final, while for West Ham they are looking to push higher into the top ten positions. After the thumping win for Saints at the London Stadium earlier in the season, a result which could have been more emphatic, West Ham will be looking to reap some sort of revenge for that.

How has José Fonte been received, and would you expect him to play on Saturday?

I think his arrival was met with a few raised eyebrows. It was unclear why the Hammers would play so much for a 33-year-old when they had other defenders to choose from. However, it became clear just a couple of days after his arrival that centre-back Angelo Ogbonna was about to undergo an operation and suddenly all became clear. He did not have the greatest of debuts, as West Ham let in four and he conceded a penalty, but he is undoubtedly a class act and will be an important player for West Ham for the rest of the season.

Who are the players in form, and who would you say will be the key men for West Ham on Saturday?

Andy Carroll is certainly in fine form, scoring an absolute wonder goal against Crystal Palace and then adding two more at Middlesbrough. He has been aided by Michail Antonio playing further forward to help him out, and he has been as consistent as anyone this season, scoring eight Premier League goals, most of them with his head. Midfielder Pedro Obiang is the top tackler in the Premier League, with a 91 per cent success rate before the City game, so he is also an important player, while new boy Robert Snodgrass will look to make his mark and José Fonte will no doubt be keen to impress on his return to St Mary’s.

Southampton vs West Ham: Team news

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the weekend Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Southampton’s home game with West Ham at St Mary’s.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury ahead of the visit of West Ham.

But Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse are back in training after spells out and could be added to the squad.

New striker Manolo Gabbiadini will also be involved, although manager Claude Puel has yet to decide whether to hand him a place in the starting line-up.

Senegal midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate is back in the West Ham squad for the trip to Southampton, having returned from the African Nations Cup.

Right-back Sam Byram felt his hamstring after the midweek 4-0 defeat by Manchester City and will be assessed.

Robert Snodgrass could make his full debut after coming on as a substitute against City while fellow January signing Jose Fonte makes a swift return to his old club.

Southampton have won their last two matches against the Hammers; they last won three consecutively against them in April 1998.

West Ham are winless in their last seven away league games against Saints (D4 L3); last winning in Southampton in November 2000 under Harry Redknapp.

Southampton have kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven home games against West Ham (W3 D4 L0).

Fraser Forster hasn’t conceded a Premier League goal against West Ham in 333 minutes of action, keeping three consecutive clean sheet in that time.

The Saints have lost two home Premier League games from leading positions this season – no side has lost more (level with Bournemouth).

Only Sunderland (0) have kept fewer away Premier League clean sheets than West Ham (1) this season.

The Hammers have conceded 40 Premier League goals this season after 23 games – it took them 32 games to concede this many in 2015-16.

Andy Carroll has had a hand in six goals in his last nine away Premier League games (five goals, one assist) after a run of 10 games without scoring or assisting away from home.

West Ham have conceded a league-high 82.5% of their goals from open play this season (33/40).

Only Sam Vokes (19.2 per game) has been involved in more aerial duels per 90 minutes on average than Andy Carroll (18.5) this season in the Premier League.

Southampton vs West Ham: Premier League preview

Show/hide article…

West Ham will be looking to make immediate amends for another home thrashing when they travel to face Southampton on Saturday.

Manchester City hit four without reply at the London Stadium on Wednesday, adding to the 5-0 hammering handed out in the FA Cup third round less than a month previous.

It was another sobering result for Slaven Bilic & Co. following a run of five wins in their previous seven Premier League games, and anything less than three points on Saturday will see West Ham leapfrogged by Southampton in the standings.

Claude Puel’s side, though, are struggling themselves having taken just three points from the previous 18 on offer, and captain Jose Fonte jumped ship to the Hammers during the transfer window.

West Ham travel to St. Mary’s with kick-off scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, February 4.

The match will not be televised live in the UK, but you can follow all the build-up and action from 2pm with Standard Sport’s London Football live blog. Enter your email address below to be informed when coverage begins.

Jose Fonte and Robert Snodgrass made their West Ham debuts against Manchester City on Wednesday, with the latter coming off the bench, so both are expected to start at the weekend. Fonte will be facing the club he left in January.

Elsewhere, Slaven Bilic has no new injuries concerns beyond current absentees Havard Nordtveit, Angelo Ogbonna, Diafra Sakho, Arthur Masuaku, Gokhan Tore and Alvaro Arbeloa.

It is less positive news for Southampton with Claude Puel confirming on Thursday that Virgil van Dijk will be sidelined for two to three months with an ankle injury picked up in Janury. The commanding centre-back joins a long list of sidelined Saints players, but fitness concerns James Ward-Prowse and James Rodriguez could return.

Manolo Gabbiadini is available to make his debut after completing a £17 million deadline-day switch from Napoli, though is lacking in match fitness after nearly a month without first-team action.

Odds correct as of 3:00pm on February 3.

Gabbiadini signs but Southampton reeling after Van Dijk injury

Show/hide article…

It is not every day you spend £17 million on a new striker and still get accused of penny-pinching by supporters.

But as Claude Puel delivered the crushing news captain Virgil van Dijk would be sidelined for the next three months, suddenly the deadline day arrival of Manolo Gabbiadini seemed almost insignificant.

Yes, Southampton have been crying out for a new front-man since the summer departures of free-scoring duo Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle. But the Italian may have to score two or three goals a game to compensate for the loss of Van Dijk at the other end, especially when Puel’s men face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.

Not that Van Dijk’s lengthy lay-off with the ankle injury suffered in last month’s Premier League win at home to champions Leicester has come as much of a surprise. It has been the worst kept secret in football ever since Van Dijk limped off against the Foxes that his return would not be a speedy one. Van Dijk knew it, his teammates knew it, Puel knew it and the fans feared it.

So the fact director of football Les Reed allowed the transfer window to close without bringing in a reinforcement is baffling, especially given the fact Saints will play their biggest game in decades at Wembley at the end of the month. How can Reed expect Puel to face Manchester United without affording him proper cover for the towering Dutchman?

Even before Van Dijk was crocked, Saints were short at the back given former skipper Jose Fonte’s £8m move to West Ham, before which Reed pledged the Euro 2016 winner would not be sold without a replacement coming in.

With Van Dijk unavailable, Puel is left with rookie Jack Stephens, who only made his full Premier League debut in Tuesday’s defeat at Swansea, and the much-maligned Maya Yoshida as his preferred centre-back pairing.

While Yoshida has improved considerably this season, he is no Van Dijk. And what happens of Stephens or Yoshida join their stricken teammate in the treatment room between now and the final?

Step forward Florin Gardos, the Romanian international who had hardly kicked a ball in anger since suffering a serious knee injury in the summer of 2015 before being given the runaround by Arsenal’s B-team in last weekend’s awful 5-0 FA Cup fourth round thrashing.

It would be enough to make most managers turn grey, but Puel is already ahead of his rivals in those stakes. To his credit, Puel refused to blame the Saints board when quizzed about Southampton’s transfer window failure ahead of Saturday’s visit of West Ham. The Frenchman stoically claimed he tried to bring in another centre-back, but that the options available were not of high enough quality.

Mamadou Sakho may have something to say about that. Southampton enquired about Puel’s fellow countryman before his loan move to Crystal Palace in the final hours of the window, but were put off by Liverpool’s £20m price tag. Palace found a way around that inflated valuation by paying a £2m loan fee and footing the bill for most of his £100,000-a-week wages.

Given Saints claim to have offered Fonte an £80,000-a-week deal prior to his exit, surely it was worth going the extra mile to bring in a player of Sakho’s quality. After all, £2m seems small change in the modern era, compared to the priceless memories of lifting a first major trophy in 41 years.

Of course, Southampton may well beat United even without Van Dijk or Sakho, as they did Liverpool in the semifinals, but if they lose Reed can expect bitter recriminations from the stands.

The Prediction Challenge: Jamie Redknapp vs Craig Hope

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Ahead of each Premier League weekend, we challenge Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

This week, it’s JAMIE REDKNAPP vs North East football reporter CRAIG HOPE… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

JAMIE REDKNAPP: I look at Chelsea and see a team that’s so well organised. Arsenal have no Cazorla, no Ramsey and playing against such a well-drilled side I can’t see them getting anything from this. 3-1 Chelsea

CRAIG HOPE: It’s that time of year when Arsenal exit Europe and their title bid stutters, and who could have predicted that? Chelsea will simply prove too strong both mentally and physically for Wenger’s side. 2-1 Chelsea

JAMIE REDKNAPP: I can’t see Palace going down. Their side is full of good, international players and I expect them to win this one. 2-0 Crystal Palace

CRAIG HOPE: Allardyce will know exactly how to get one over on his former team, who are struggling at both ends of the pitch right now. 2-0 Crystal Palace

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Callum Wilson’s injury is a big blow and Bournemouth are on a bad run. The likes of Tom Davies and Romelu Lukaku will be too much for them. 2-0 Everton

CRAIG HOPE: They’re a strange side, Everton, but finally they look like running into a bit of consistent form. The Cherries are yet to win this year and are in real danger of getting dragged into a relegation scrap. 2-1 Everton

JAMIE REDKNAPP: I expect this to be a tight game. Hull have had a little resurgence and have picked up some good results. I think Liverpool have the edge but if Hull get a result it will not surprise me. 2-1 Liverpool

CRAIG HOPE: Every time I see Hull they play well, and the same cannot be said for Liverpool at present. This will be another frustrating afternoon for Klopp - officials beware. 1-1

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Another tight game. West Ham need to dust themselves down after their defeat by Man City but Southampton are without Virgil van Dijk. 1-1

CRAIG HOPE: The Hammers need to respond to that City humbling. They were brilliant in their last away outing at Boro and I think they’ll have enough about them to emerge with at least a point. 1-1

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Watford’s win over Arsenal took everyone by surprise. I thought they would get dragged into the relegation scrap. Burnley struggle on the road so I think Watford will win this. Watford 2-1

CRAIG HOPE: Can Burnley finally win away from home? Yes they can, and inconsistent Watford are there for the taking. Burnley 1-0

JAMIE REDKNAPP: These are two decent mid-table sides and it is hard to separate them. 2-2

CRAIG HOPE: Ah, the battle for eighth, what a contest this promises to be… Draw. 1-1

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Spurs are unbeaten at home and Dele Alli and Harry Kane will have too much for Middlesbrough. Tottenham 2-0

CRAIG HOPE: If any team can frustrate Spurs and grind out a draw then it’ll be Karanka’s Boro. But Pochettino’s men need to respond after dropping points at Sunderland and once in front they’ll not look back. Tottenham 3-0

JAMIE REDKNAPP: This is a must-win for City. They may be outsiders for the title but are still a dangerous side. Whoever finishes above City will win the league. 3-1 Man City

CRAIG HOPE: Jesus has arrived just in time to cure City’s ills and, while Swansea are on the up under Clement, the hosts will simply be too good. 2-0 Man City

JAMIE REDKNAPP: United have so many good players – there is no way they should be scrambling to get into the top four. Leicester saw off Man City here but I don’t see them doing it against United. 2-1 Man Utd

CRAIG HOPE: The champions are yet to score in the league in 2017 and I can’t see that changing here. A narrow away victory for me with Ibrahimovic the difference. 1-0 Man Utd
