Romeu: Sunderland clash is vital

Show/hide article…

Saints head to the Stadium of Light to take on the Premier League’s bottom-placed side, but also a team that is high on confidence, after the Black Cats drew 0-0 with high-flying Tottenham and thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 away from home in their past two outings.

Meanwhile, Claude Puel’s men are coming off back-to-back losses in the Premier League, which has seen them slip to 13th, ahead of their last game before the EFL Cup final.

"It is very important,” said Romeu of the trip to Sunderland. “We haven’t felt very good playing the last games and also playing away we haven’t played our best football, so it will be tough, because they need those three points.

“They are in a difficult situation, and if we want to enjoy the league, if we want to play much better football then we need to start winning games and to have the confidence back.”

Romeu added: "They have had ups and downs along the season, and now they want to come back.

“They are in a difficult situation in the table, and I’m sure they want to get out from there. We just want to make sure they have no chances to win the game, that we go there with our heads right into the game and winning that game. We really need it and we really want it.

"We need to build also a little bit for what’s coming, with the final. Thinking of this next game, if we win it that will give us a massive confidence boost to go into the next one, which will be also very important.

“If we can win the next two games it will be something very nice and we could also carry on for the rest of the season.”

Puel looks for a reaction

Show/hide article…

Three successive victories have been juxtaposed by an equal spell without one and Puel says they are full of determination to put things right after a full week to prepare.

“I think we are disappointed and angry also, because it’s not sufficient and it’s important now to correct this to give a good reaction and a good answer,” Puel said.

“The best thing to prepare for important games beyond this is to take a good result at Sunderland.

“It’s always difficult with these losses to always have a good confidence in our play but I saw all this week our good work on the training ground.

“For the first time it was a week just to prepare for this game. This for us and for the staff is a privilege since the beginning of the season.”

Claude Puel warns Sunderland that his Southampton squad are angry

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel has said his squad are angry ahead of the visit to Sunderland this weekend.

Puel has been happy with his side’s focus this week and says they are determined to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Puel said: "I saw all of this week a good level. For the first time in a long time, we had a whole week to prepare for the game.

"The squad is angry with the last results. We have to correct this and give a good answer.

“We have to keep a good ambition. We cannot accept this position and the last results. It’s not us.”

Southampton, who are without Sofiane Boufal (ankle), will face a Sunderland side high on confidence following their 4-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Puel is wary of David Moyes’ side but says a win would provide them with the best possible preparation for their next game - the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

He said: "They have confidence from their last result. We will need to show strong character.

“The best way to prepare for the EFL Cup final is with a good result this weekend against Sunderland.”

Puel also gave an update on their pursuit of free agent Martin Caceres, the former Barcelona and Juventus defender.

He said: "We will see in a few days. We will see if he can bring something for the squad, if he signs.

“For the moment it is just speculation. We don’t know. Of course I think he is an international player and his quality, his spirit, can be interesting.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel insists his squad are ‘angry’

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s run of three defeats in a row has left the players angry and keen to bounce back when they travel to bottom side Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, manager Claude Puel has said.

Southampton, who were dumped out of the FA Cup after a 5-0 trashing by Arsenal, are 13th in the league table following back-to-back defeats by Swansea City and West Ham United.

‘The squad is angry with the last results,’ Puel said on Thursday.

‘We have to correct this and give a good answer. We have to keep a good ambition. We cannot accept this position and the last results. It’s not us.’

The slump could not have come at a worse time for Southampton, who face Manchester United in the League Cup final on February 26, the Saints’ first major Wembley final since they lost to Nottingham Forest in the same competition in 1979.

Puel said beating Sunderland, who trounced Crystal Palace 4-0 away from home last weekend, would be ideal preparation for one of the biggest days in the club’s history.

‘I saw all of this week a good level,’ he added. 'For the first time in a long time, we had a whole week to prepare for the game.

‘(Sunderland) have confidence from their last result. We will need to show strong character. The best way to prepare for the cup final is with a good result this weekend against Sunderland.’

Southampton will be without defensive lynchpin Virgil van Dijk for both games due to a long-term injury.

‘He is a big miss for the team. The answer is to give a little more as a collective,’ Puel said.

Sofiane Boufal (ankle) will also miss the trip to Sunderland, but Puel is hopeful the midfielder will recover for the Wembley showdown.

‘Sofiane is not available for this game and we will see for the final, for his recovery and his work,’ Puel added. ‘I don’t know for the moment. But against Sunderland he is not available.’

TRANSFER UPDATE: Caceres can bring ‘quality and spirit’

Show/hide article…

Martin Caceres would bring “quality” and “spirit” to Saints if the club can get a deal for the central defender over the line in the coming days.

Saints have done all they can to sign the 29-year-old free agent, and are now waiting on a work permit being granted.

Caceres has to stay out of the country until it is approved, which the club hope may happen early next week.

At that stage he will be allowed to formally sign a deal until the end of the season and join up with his new teammates at Staplewood.

Saints boss Claude Puel admitted it was hard to speak about a deal which still has a slim chance of still falling through, but did reflect on what Caceres could bring to the squad.

“For the moment it is difficult for me to comment on this because he has not signed for Southampton,” said Puel.

“In the next few days we see if he can bring something for the squad and if he signs.

“For the moment it is just speculation and we don’t know.

“He is an international player and his quality and his spirit can be interesting.”

Saints have moved for Caceres following the news that defensive leader Virgil van Dijk faces several months on the sidelines.

There is no prospect of Caceres being available for this weekend’s game at Sunderland, meaning the earliest he could make his debut would be the League Cup final at Wembley on February 26.

However, that would be a huge gamble from Puel after only a week and a half of training with the club and given the former Barcelona and Juventus man has not played for more than a year.

“It’s difficult for me to speak about this player because it’s not the reality for the moment,” reiterated Puel.

“I think it’s a good possibility and after we will see if he can be in a good fit because it was a long time with a long injury, and I think he works but we don’t know his level and his possibility.

“For the moment the priority is that he can sign for Southampton. For the moment it’s not the reality.

“If we have the possibility to see him on the squad for his spirit, his personality and his quality it’s perhaps important for us.”

Republic of Ireland call for O’Connor

Show/hide article…

The 17-year-old midfielder has today flown out to meet up with the squad, who play their first game in the competition against Norway tomorrow.

Ireland then face ties against Portugal and Slovakia before the tournament concludes, as they prepare for next month’s UEFA Under-19 Championships Elite qualifying rounds.

O’Connor has enjoyed a successful campaign with Saints so far and, despite being a second-year scholar, has already made 21 starts for Radhi Jaïdi’s Under-23s side.

“It’s good news for Tom”, commented Jaïdi.

"It’s important and it is a result of the hard work he has been putting in since the start of the season.

“Obviously he has been continually playing with us and he has been learning and improving, so congratulations to him. Hopefully he will continue to work and push higher.”
