Southampton finish bad week with 100th Premier League home defeat

Show/hide article…

Southampton ended a miserable week by slumping to a third straight defeat as West Ham triumphed 3-1 in front of a frustrated St Mary’s on Saturday.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s debut goal after only 12 minutes gave Saints the perfect platform, but one upon which they failed to build.

Andy Carroll levelled just two minutes later before Pedro Obiang’s long-ranger and Mark Noble’s free kick – helped into the net by the luckless Steven Davis – sealed Southampton’s 100th Premier League home defeat.

Gabbiadini became an instant hero and scoring on his first outing eases the pressure on the shoulders of the £17 million import from Napoli.

There are enough bad teams in the Premier League for Southampton to avoid becoming too embroiled in the relegation scrap.

The failure to recruit a defender in the transfer window was brutally exposed by a hapless performance at the back. With Virgil van Dijk facing a long lay-off, Southampton may have to score three or more goals to win a game.

Sofiane Boufal hobbling off added to Puel’s woes ahead of the EFL Cup final at the end of the month.

4 – Another game, another four changes from Puel, including benching the in-form Shane Long, who smashed the ball into the stands in a show of frustration at the end of the game.

If the manager does not know his best team, how can he expect the players to?

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 5 – Should have saved Obiang’s effort. Wrong-footed for Noble’s deflected free kick.

DF Cedric Soares, 4 – Not at his best defensively and could not find his radar going forward. Guilty of some wayward passing.

DF Jack Stephens, 4 – Could not handle the aerial threat of Carroll. Misses having Van Dijk alongside him.

DF Maya Yoshida, 4 – Looked like he was running in treacle when he failed to keep up with the hardly quicksilver Carroll in the build-up to the equaliser.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 5 – His performance was not up to his usual high standards. Puel will be hoping it was just a bad day at the office.

MF Oriol Romeu, 4 – Failed to get a foothold in midfield and was slow to close down Obiang for West Ham’s second goal.

MF James Ward-Prowse 6 – Unlucky to see second half header tipped over by Darren Randolph. Tried his best to keep the team going at the end.

MF Steve Davis, 6 – Unlucky when he helped Noble’s free kick into the net. Never gave in.

FW Manolo Gabbiadini, 7 – Took his goal superbly and caused West Ham problems with his movement. Should have done better with second half chance.

FW Jay Rodriguez, 4 – Completely off the pace before being hauled off at half time.

FW Sofiane Boufal, 6 – Showed some neat touches before being forced off with second half injury.

FW Nathan Redmond, 5 – Made a few dangerous runs but did not see enough of the ball.

FW Shane Long, 5 – Frustrated not to be called upon from the start.

Jose Fonte relieved after West Ham’s ‘emotional’ win at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte admitted his relief after securing a 3-1 victory with new club West Ham at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Fonte, 33, spent seven years with the Saints before exiting for West Ham during the January window for a fee of £8m.

The Portugal international returned to St Mary’s just over two weeks after making the switch and revealed that the occasion against his old side had been emotional.

“It was a strange experience coming back to Southampton,” said Fonte.

"It was emotional, difficult, but in the end I can say a big thank you to everyone, to the West Ham supporters and my team-mates for helping me get through it.

“I managed to block everything out and stay focused on the game. The most important thing was achieved, which is the three points and a great performance.”

Despite falling behind early to a Manolo Gabbiadini goal on his Southampton debut, West Ham recovered to claim the three points thanks to goals from Andy Carroll, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble.

The Hammers are now up to 9th in the table following a run of three wins in the last four league games, with Tony Pulis’ West Brom the next club facing Slaven Bilic’s side.

“It’s never easy. That wasn’t the start I wanted, we weren’t at the races, but we showed great character and personality to come and play,” Fonte added.

“We played some great football, scored three goals and could have scored a couple more. It was a fantastic performance from everyone and we move on to the next one.”

Concentration is key, says Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse believes Southampton will only get back to winning ways by staying focused as they begin preparations for a trip to Sunderland next weekend.

Saints slipped to their sixth defeat in their last seven Premier League games following their setback against West Ham on Saturday, and Ward-Prowse wants the team to refocus quickly.

The defeat means Saints have lost more side than any other in the league after taking a lead, and Ward-Prowse tried to put his finger on why that might be the case.

“I think it’s a bit of concentration,” he said.

“We’ve conceded a lot of goals after just scoring ourselves, but we’ve also had the nice distraction of a cup run, but we have to remain focused and look forward to a tough game at Sunderland.

“We knew we had to get a few goals, but we had to be a bit more clinical in front of goal and maybe take that chance and then the luck will fall our way.”

A trip to the Stadium of Light awaits Saints next weekend, and Ward-Prowse gave a clear message of what the team needs to do in the north east.

“We need to stick together and be hard to break down,” he said.

“It’s going to be a bit different now with a week’s preparation for the game, but we’ve got to make sure that we go there and make sure that we fight for the three points.”

Sofiane Boufal an injury doubt for Southampton’s EFL Cup final against Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal an injury doubt for Southampton’s EFL Cup final against Manchester United

Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal faces a race against time to be fit for the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

Boufal - Southampton’s club record signing - limped off in the second half of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to West Ham and was replaced by Shane Long.

Virgil van Dijk’s ankle injury and Jose Fonte’s recent departure have left Southampton short defensively, but the Saints have also been forced to manage in recent weeks without talisman Charlie Austin [shoulder], and long-term injury victim Jeremy Pied.

Manolo Gabbiadini made an instant impression in Austin’s absence following his Deadline Day move from Napoli, notching Southampton’s opener against West Ham.

And boss Claude Puel admits it will be a blow should Southampton be without Boufal for a prolonged period of time after Gabbiadini and the Moroccan showed signs of building a partnership that can help Saints flourish going forward.

“It’s an ankle injury [that Boufal sustained] and we will see how long he stays out,” the Southampton manager said.

"I don’t know for the moment, [how long he will be unavailable for].

"I hope it’s not important, we will see but I hope it’s not a bad injury because he’s a talented player who can give a good solution and he had a good relationship with Gabbiadini.

“He’s an important player for us and we hope he will be available.”

Sunderland plotting raid on Prem rivals: David Moyes has striker scouted

Show/hide article…

Gallagher is on-loan at Championship strugglers Blackburn for the season. The striker has fired in nine goals for Owen Coyle’s side this term. And that’s peaked the interest of Black Cats boss David Moyes.

The Sun say he’s sent scout Mick Doherty to check the player out. Gallagher’s chances of breaking through at Southampton have been hit by the £17m arrival of Manolo Gabbiadini. And Moyes could take advantage with a swoop in the summer.

Gallagher, 21, has made three Premier League starts for Saints. He’s scored twice for the club, once in the top flight and also in the FA Cup.

Fonte admits Southampton return came too soon: ‘It was emotional’

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte admitted it was tough making such a swift return to Southampton.

The Portugal defender spent seven years with Saints before opting to join West Ham in the January transfer window.

A fortnight later he was back at St Mary’s helping the Hammers to a 3-1 win on Saturday and piling on the misery for his old side.

‘It was a strange experience coming back to Southampton,’ Fonte said.

'It was emotional, difficult, but in the end I can say a big thank you to everyone - to the West Ham supporters and my team-mates for helping me get through it.

‘I managed to block everything out and stay focused on the game. The most important thing was achieved, which is the three points and a great performance.’

West Ham fell behind to a debut strike from Saints’ Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

But Andy Carroll hauled the visitors level and Pedro Obiang’s first goal for the club put them ahead at half-time, before Mark Noble’s free-kick was deflected into his own net by Steven Davis.

It was the perfect response from Slaven Bilic’s side after they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Manchester City three days earlier on Fonte’s debut.

‘It’s never easy. That wasn’t the start I wanted, we weren’t at the races, but we showed great character and personality to come and play,’ added Fonte.

‘We played some great football, scored three goals and could have scored a couple more. It was a fantastic performance from everyone and we move on to the next one.’

Southampton’s problems are piling up both on the pitch, where they have lost six of their last seven matches, and in the treatment room.

Key defender Virgil van Dijk is out for up to three months and on Saturday record signing Sofiane Boufal limped off, making him a doubt for the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

‘It’s an ankle injury and we will see how long he stays out, I hope it’s not important, we will see,’ said Southampton manager Claude Puel.

‘He’s an important player for us and we hope he will be available.’

Best footballers in the Premier League: The one player simply too good for their current club

Show/hide article…

Most teams have one star player at the heart of their success, often carrying their side over the line.

At times this season Alexis Sanchez has filled that role for Arsenal, and at the bottom end of the table the same can be said for Gylfi Sigurdsson at Swansea City.

So we decided to take a look at the one player who is simply too good for each Premier League team.
