Southampton 1-3 West Ham: Puel targets vital Sunderland win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has admitted his side face a vital game against Sunderland next weekend as they look to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle.

A 3-1 St Mary’s defeat to West Ham left Saints with a sorry record of six defeats in their last seven league games and just starting to look over their shoulder.

They travel to Sunderland next Saturday for their final match before the EFL Cup final at Wembley, desperate for a win to ease any top flight nerves.

When asked about the prospect of a relegation battle, Puel said: “We play against a team at this moment like the next game, an important game for us.

“At the moment it is not possible to see on the first part of the table and it is important now to take points and to prevent other teams to come back on our level.

“It is very important of course and we need results of course and it’s important to win and to give confidence for this team.

“Sometimes it has not been the reward like the second half, the first half against Swansea was not sufficient but it is important to keep a good mentality, aggressiveness, work very hard and prepare this important game against Sunderland.

“We see all the possibilities for the moment to come back in the first part of the table.”

He added: “Of course it’s a bad moment for January and the start of February also.

“I think it’s enough and of course we have to correct and to win.

“It’s a pity for this game because we can start very well with the fantastic goal of Gabbiadini and we took a goal just five minutes after and it is not the first time.

“It is important to keep concentration about this situation because it’s always difficult after the result.

“It was difficult to finish the first half and I think the second half good solution, quality with many chances, and we are unlucky on the third goal.

“We continue to play without the possibility to score with all the chances.

“It was good play in the second half like against Swansea but we have to correct the situation about free kicks also with concentration because it is difficult after the result.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel vows to address defensive issues after West Ham loss

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel vowed to address the string of defensive errors that contributed to Southampton’s defeat to West Ham.

The Saints failed to build on debutant Manolo Gabbiadini’s 12th-minute strike as goals from Andy Carroll, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble sealed a 3-1 victory for the Hammers - their first win at St. Mary’s

“It a big disappointment because we started this game really well with a fantastic first goal for Gabbiadini,” Puel told Sky Sports.

"We took this goal too easy and we made mistakes. It is important to correct this. It was difficult to finish the first half and after the second half we played attack defence with many opportunities.

“It was a good second half was positive attitude and quality but it was not enough.”

Asked if he was worried by the manner in which his side conceded, the Saints boss added: "All of the goals you can correct.

"We lacked concentration about this situation so it’s important to correct and find a clean sheet for the next game. That will bring confidence.

"We know we have a good solutions in attack and now with Gabbiadini we can do fantastic results and play.

“But it’s important to correct our concentration about free-kicks and defensive mistakes. This is an obligation.”

Deadline Day signing Gabbiadini endeared himself to the Southampton faithful with a stunning debut, and Puel insists the Italy international will go on to play a key role for the foreseeable future.

“For a first game we saw a lot of quality,” he said. "It was a fantastic first goal and he had a good relationship with his partner with quality.

"He is always available to run in behind the lines. He can also play between the lines. It is very interesting, he can read the play and give assists.

“He is a very good player for and will be very important for the future.”

Southampton 1-3 West Ham - did we take your picture at the match?

Show/hide article…

It started so brightly as debutant Manolo Gabbiadini lashed home a sensational strike on 12 minutes to give Saints the lead.

But then it all fell apart - mainly because of some really bad first-half defending.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens were split open just two minutes after Saints had taken the lead, allowing an unmarked Andy Carroll to slot home to make it 1-1.

Things then got even worse for Saints, as Pedro Obiang’s low effort bounced through a crowded box and past a rooted Fraser Forster.

West Ham then wrapped up the three points on 52 minutes as Mark Noble’s free-kick deflected off Steven Davis and into the net for 3-1.

The Southern Daily Echo’s chief photographer Stuart Martin was at St Mary’s Stadium, so check out the pictures above.

Blackburn 1 QPR 0: Holloway’s men fume over disallowed goal

Show/hide article…

Sam Gallagher’s stoppage-time goal earned Blackburn a 1-0 win at Ewood Park despite QPR’s protests that a Conor Washington header had previously crossed the line.

The home fans had endured a frustrating afternoon of few chances and made their feelings about manager Owen Coyle clear, but Gallagher stopped those chants in their tracks in the dying moments with his 11th goal of the season.

QPR will feel aggrieved, though, as Washington’s header in the second half looked to have bounced over the line but the officials denied them.

The visitors created the clearest opportunities but found Jason Steele in inspired form, and after their first defeat on the road in 2017 are now only six points off the relegation places.

Rovers, meanwhile, ended a three-match winless run in the Championship and remain three points from safety.

Craig Conway replaced the injured Derrick Williams in the only change for Blackburn from the defeat against Leeds, while QPR named an unchanged side.

QPR peppered the Blackburn goal from the outset. Inside the first minute a raking cross-field ball found Washington, who squared to Jamie Mackie free inside the box but Steele pulled off a stunning low save.

Washington’s dangerous cross barely a minute later just evaded Mackie and after Massimo Luongo’s close-range shot was diverted for a corner, Joel Lynch saw his resulting header tipped over by Steele.

Rovers responded soon after when Conway’s cross found Liam Feeney but he lashed wide.

Neither side created anything clear-cut as the half wore on, although Sam Gallagher should have done better when he met a Conway corner 12 yards out but could not find the target.

Despite their recovery from those desperate opening minutes, Blackburn’s only shot on target was a Charlie Mulgrew free-kick one minute before the break but it was a comfortable height and pace for Alex Smithies.

The visitors had the first real chance of note in the second half when Washington controlled on the left of the area but proceeded to drag his effort wide.

The game’s real talking point came on the hour as a long throw somehow found Washington in the area and his powerful 12-yard header bounced down off the underside of the crossbar. However, the officials ruled the ball had not crossed the line.

Blackburn went close soon after when Connor Mahoney’s superb curling free-kick was prodded goalwards at the back post by Darragh Lenihan and was palmed away on the line by Smithies, who then watched Feeney scuff the rebound wide.

As the game entered the dying moments, the Blackburn fans loudly voiced their displeasure against Coyle. But in the 91st minute, Marvin Emnes delivered the perfect cross for Gallagher to half-volley home from six yards and give his under-fire boss some respite.

Slaven Bilic hails ‘fantastic’ West Ham win at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic praised West Ham’s complete performance as they returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Southampton.

Goals from Andy Carroll, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble saw the Hammers bounce back from Wednesday’s drubbing against Manchester City in style.

West Ham also recovered from Manolo Gabbiadini’s opener at St. Mary’s to secure a third win in four league outings, and Bilic was unanimous.

“The key was everything, we played a fantastic game,” he told Sky Sports. "We had our plan and the guys executed it brilliantly.

"Gabbiadini’s goal was great but we didn’t give up and continued to play like we played.

"They let us play a little bit and that’s why we were good, we grew with the game and equalised quick.

"It was a great team performance, solid defending with numbers and closing them down. When we could press them we pressed them.

"With the ball we had pace, presence and bodies up front and we were great switching sides with combinations from the back.

“It’s not only three points it’s a great performance and I’m so proud of the boys.”

West Ham’s victory - their first ever at St. Mary’s - lifted the club to ninth in the Premier League, 14 points clear of Southampton who dropped to 13th.

And Bilic claimed victory against one of their direct rivals would leave the Hammers in good stead going forward.

“This is a very difficult away trip, they have played some really good stuff both at home and away,” he added.

"They were one point below us before the game so this was one of them six pointers so it was extremely important for this stage of the season because the crazy results have started to happen.

"Forty two points to go and we have to approach every game like it was our last.

“With a little bit of luck if we continue to play like this over even better or with a little bit less unluckiness we’re going to be OK.”

Southampton 1 West Ham 3: Saints hammered at home by resurgent Irons

Show/hide article…

Deadline-day signing Manolo Gabbiadini fired Claude Puel’s Saints ahead just 12 minutes into his debut – but that was as good as it got for the hosts. Andy Carroll equalised within two minutes, Pedro Obiang added the second before halftime and a Steven Davis own-goal left EFL Cup finalists Southampton with just three points from the last 21 available. It also meant a winning return to the south coast for former Saints captain Jose Fonte, who left to join West Ham a fortnight ago. Hammers boss Slaven Bilic saluted a “fantastic” display from West Ham after they bounced back from their midweek mauling by Manchester City.

“After the City game I said that no matter how much that hurt us it should not affect our confidence” He said: “After the City game I said that no matter how much that hurt us it should not affect our confidence. “That’s what happened here. Today we were fantastic. When we had the ball we were everything you can ask as a manager.” Portugal defender Fonte endured a torrid debut in the 4-0 midweek defeat by City – and he went AWOL when Southampton took the lead. Jay Rodriguez’s ball somehow caught out the West Ham defence, looping over Fonte and Cheikhou Kouyate into the path of Gabbiadini. The £17million new boy still had plenty to do as he cut in from the left but his powerful angled drive rocketed past Darren Randolph and in off the underside of the bar.

But within two minutes, Saints’ defence – minus the injured Virgil van Dijk as well as Fonte – went missing themselves. Obiang’s pass forward did not look particularly menacing but it split centre-halves Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens, allowing Carroll to slot in his sixth goal in 12 games. Saints keeper Fraser Forster then did well to beat out Aaron Cresswell’s shot. At the other end Gabbiadini glanced a Cedric Soares cross wide, but when the crucial second goal did arrive it came from an unlikely source.

A minute before half-time Robert Snodgrass’ corner was headed out to Obiang, who was loitering some 30 yards out. The Spanish midfielder, by no means known for his shooting, sent a low drive through a crowd of players which seemed to deceive Forster as it crept inside the far post for his first Hammers goal. Saints came out after the break determined to claw themselves level, with James Ward-Prowse forcing a near-post save from Randolph and Cresswell denying Gabbiadini. But seven minutes after the restart West Ham won a free-kick down the left, Mark Noble swung it towards goal and Davis stuck out a foot to inadvertently hook the ball into his own net. Puel said: “Now it’s a big moment, the end of January, the start of February and I think now it’s enough, we have to correct it.”

Premier League debut watch: From Alfred N’Diaye to Saido Berahino

Show/hide article…

There were the goalscoring heroes and controversial characters among the Premier League debutants this weekend.

But who will have the fans really excited in the belief that they can make a difference?

Here, we sum up the efforts of those trying to impress their new supporters…

It was a dream debut for N’Diaye, a Deadline Day loan signing from Villarreal, as he opened the scoring at the KCOM Stadium with a close-range finish just before half-time. The former Sunderland man regularly got the better of Emre Can and Jordan Henderson and looks an ideal complement to Tom Huddlestone in Hull’s midfield.

The Poland international saw little of the ball as Hull employed a counter-attacking strategy against Liverpool. When in possession, he looked neat and tidy, creating one chance for Abel Hernandez with a fine through ball and his guile around the box offers something Hull would otherwise lack following the departure of Robert Snodgrass.

After making his debut off the bench in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in midweek, Snodgrass had a rather more enjoyable afternoon in making his first start for West Ham. He put in a number of crosses but perhaps the real positive from his performance was the work rate - the Scot made more high-intensity sprints than any other player on the pitch.

The Italy striker made a quick impact with a brilliant finish to open the scoring for Southampton but any hopes of being the home side’s hero faded soon after as West Ham completely turned the game around. Gabbiadini even squandered a good chance to level things up but Saints fans will still feel encouraged by what they saw.

Zarate looked lively cutting inside off the left flank in a new-look 4-3-3 formation under Walter Mazzarri. The 29-year-old added a level of technical quality not seen among Watford’s physical midfield and displayed impressive close ball control. He nearly scored in the first half, hitting his effort just wide of the post.

His full debut at home. Playing on the right wing, Niang assisted Troy Deeney’s opener with a fine cross before scoring his first Premier League goal from a header on the stroke of half-time. The 22-year-old was unafraid to take on defenders and also tried a superb curled effort which Tom Heaton did well to tip over the bar in the first half. He tailed off a bit in the second half and was eventually subbed for Isaac Success.

If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, Ovideo looks to be the perfect replacement for Patrick van Aanholt for Sunderland. Given the tough task of keeping Wilfried Zaha quiet, he did just that. It was a strong start from Oviedo who already looks to be a key component if Sunderland are going to pull off yet another great relegation escape.

A 52nd-minute substitute as Jack Rodwell came off injured, it was a solid performance from Gibson. There were some question marks about his fitness levels having not played in the Premier League since the final day of last season, but he quickly got up to speed. The test will now come if he can maintain the same level in tougher circumstances.

A signing that some scoffed at, Lescott made his Sunderland debut by coming on in the 57th minute after an injury to John O’Shea. He played his part, helping to clear a fine cross from Joel Ward in the 65th minute to ensure Sunderland kept their first away clean sheet of the season and their second in a row in the Premier League. If O’Shea faces a spell on the sidelines, Lescott could prove to be a good like-for-like switch.

An excellent full debut from the former Hull midfielder, who replaced Claudio Yacob in the heart of the West Brom midfield. Only Erik Pieters made more tackles at The Hawthorns, while nobody made more interceptions or regained possession more often than Livermore.

After a tumultuous week, Berahino was kept out of the firing line initially on his return to The Hawthorns, but came off the bench with just over half an hour to go. The 23-year-old was very ineffective, making only four touches, none of which were in the Baggies’ penalty area.
