Davis and Yoshida remain sidelined

Show/hide article…

Neither have recovered in time for Saturday’s trip to St James’ Park, and will continue with their rehab work back at Staplewood.

Long-term absentee Charlie Austin is also making progress, but again won’t feature, as Saints attempt to put distance between themselves and the Premier League drop zone.

“Davo continues with his treatment,” Pellegrino commented. "Last week he felt something more in his hamstring, so he will be unavailable for another week.

“Also Charlie [Austin] and Maya [Yoshida], will be the other players that are out this weekend.”

Arsenal Leicester Southampton scout Basel’s Mohamed Elyounoussi - sources

Show/hide article…

Arsenal, Leicester and Southampton are weighing up moves for Basel star Mohamed Elyounoussi, sources have told ESPN FC.

All three Premier League clubs watched Elyounoussi put in a man-of-the match performance during Basel’s shock 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Norway international Elyounoussi scored Basel’s equaliser against City before going on to set up the winner for Michael Lang in the second half to cap a fine individual performance.

The 23-year-old has scored seven goals and laid on 13 assists in all competitions for Basel so far this season to earn himself a reputation as one of the best attacking players in Europe.

Elyounoussi was instrumental in helping Basel qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League by finishing runners-up to Manchester United in Group A and he impressed in both meetings against Manchester City in the round of 16.

Arsenal are well aware of Elyounoussi after coming up against him twice in the Champions League group stage last season and they have continued to keep tabs on his progress.

Leicester and Southampton are also long-term admirers of the player, who can play out wide or up front, as they look to bolster their attacking options for next season.

Basel are aware of the mounting interest in the Norway international and are bracing themselves for offers when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Elyounoussi’s agent, Ferhat Cifici, confirmed there was a great deal of interest in the player, but refused to reveal the identity of the clubs that were chasing him.

“I don’t want to speak specifically about certain clubs, but there are lots of teams interested in Mohamed,” Cifici told ESPN FC. "He was man-of-the-match against Manchester City and I know some clubs went to watch him in that game.

"His performances for Basel have made a lot of teams sit up and take notice of him and what he can do at the highest level.

“The boy is ready to make the next step in his career and I have a lot of meetings planned with clubs so we will see what happens.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino ready for ‘massive’ run-in

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says his side face nine massive games between now and the end of the season as they seek Premier League survival.

Pellegrino thinks his side have been playing better since the turn of the year but says it is points rather than performances which matter from now on.

Pellegrino’s side have won just one of their last 15 Premier League matches, and travel to relegation rivals Newcastle on Saturday, with the sides currently occupying the two places above the drop zone.

“Thinking about the next nine games, every single game will be massive,” said Pellegrino.

"Because we have to try and do our job as soon as possible, and I think we are ready to compete.

"It is difficult now to say to the fans and to the people ‘OK, we are getting better’ because, since January, obviously I think the team lift performance, but now we need to get results - it is reality.

"We have to be focused on what we have to do on the pitch. How we attack, how we defend, how balanced is our mentality in good moments and difficult moments.

“I don’t like it and I suffer when we can’t get good results, like fans, like everybody.”

On Saturday Pellegrino will come up against Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez, whom he played under at Valencia and Liverpool, before later becoming part of the Spaniard’s coaching staff at Anfield.

“We are in contact sometimes, yes,” Pellegrino added.

“Obviously I have had a lot of relations with Rafa and I will always be grateful with him, because I have been with him as a player and assistant and also with his staff.”

Saints Together campaign closes with charity dinner

Show/hide article…

As part of the club’s Saints Together campaign, the dinner was an occasion to celebrate the work Saints Foundation does in and around the local community.

Esteemed guests included Saints stars from the past and present, members of the club’s board, Southampton’s mayor and sheriff and other supporters of Saints Foundation.

Throughout the night, guests were treated to exclusive interviews and inspirational stories from some of the stars of this year’s Saints Together campaign, including Charlie Austin, Iwan Thomas and Saints4Sport participant Laura Cook.

Even though the charity dinner’s aim was raise awareness of the Foundation’s work, it was also an opportunity to raise more vital funds for the charity, allowing it to continue providing vital support to children, young people and adults at risk across Hampshire.

Throughout the course of the evening, more than £20,000 was raised through the generous support of those attending, meaning well in excess of £25,000 was raised from this year’s Saints Together campaign.

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he needs results ahead of Newcastle clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino insists his players are well aware they are in a relegation scrap and believes they are up to the task of securing their survival.

Saints travel to fellow strugglers Newcastle on Saturday in a crucial match with both sides hovering precariously just above the bottom three.

Pellegrino’s side have won just one of their last 15 Premier League matches, against rock-bottom West Brom.

They missed the chance to ease some of the pressure last weekend when they could only manage a 0-0 draw with another struggling team, Stoke, at St Mary’s.

Southampton have nine games remaining to save themselves, starting with the trip to St James’ Park, and Pellegrino concedes now is the time to deliver results rather than performances.

He said: 'Every single game from now, thinking about the next nine games, will be massive because we have to try to do our job as soon as possible.

'We have to be focused on what we have to do on the pitch - how we attack, how we defend, how balanced is our mentality in good moments and difficult moments.

'The team is conscious about how we need to be in this moment, how we approach this situation and we are ready to compete.

'It is difficult to talk to the fans and say we are getting better because since January the team lifted performances, but now we need results. That is the reality.

‘As a manager I have to think about what to do. We need results but the consequence is what we do on the pitch.’

Pellegrino will come up against Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez, whom he played under at Valencia and Liverpool and was later part of the Spaniard’s coaching staff at Anfield.

‘We are in contact sometimes, yes.’ added Pellegrino.

‘Obviously I have had a lot of relations with Rafa and I will always be grateful with him because I have been with him as a player and assistant and also with his staff.’

Saints skipper Steven Davis has missed the last three matches due to a knock and could be absent again, while defender Maya Yoshida (knee) and striker Charlie Austin (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.
