Former Saints boss pays tribute to Astori having tried to sign him at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino paid tribute to Davide Astori, the Fiorentina captain who died at the weekend, and admitted he tried to sign the Italian when he was at St Mary’s.

Astori, who was linked with a move to Saints on many occasions, died following a “sudden illness” at the age of 31.

On Sunday, the Italy international was found dead in his hotel room ahead of Fiorentina’s Serie A match against Udinese.

“I want to send my condolences to the Astori family and all the people who love him,” Tottenham boss Pochettino said.

"I had the possibility to meet him three years ago. Had the chance to sign him at Southampton and spent three hours with him, over lunch. We share the pain.

“I want to send all my energy to his family.”

Soccer Saturday pundits torn between Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne for PFA Player of the Year

Soccer Saturday pundits torn between Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne for PFA Player of the Year

The Soccer Saturday panel discuss the contenders to be named PFA Player of the Year, with their votes split between Kevin De Buyne and Mohamed Salah.

Manchester City’s Belgium international is currently considered favourite for the award, but two of the four pundits believe joint-leading goalscorer Salah is worthy of the Premier League’s top individual award.

De Bruyne has contributed seven goals and 14 assists towards his side’s quest for another Premier League crown, while Salah is tied with two-time reigning Golden Boot winner Harry Kane at the top of the scoring charts, while also setting up another seven.

Kane (9/1) is followed by Sergio Aguero (14/1), David Silva (25/1), Raheem Sterling (28/1), Eden Hazard (33/1), Romelu Lukaku (40/1) and David De Gea (50/1) in Sky Bet’s PFA Player of the Year market, but the pundits see it as a two-horse race…

For me, Hazard has gone off the boil which leaves it as a two-horse race between De Bruyne and Salah. Salah is probably the one who has surprised everybody and has been absolutely astonishing, better than we could have imagined, with 24 Premier League goals and 32 in all competitions.

As incredible as those stats are for a wide player and for as much I would love to give it to him, because of Manchester City’s dominance you have to give it to De Bruyne.

You look at what Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo provide their teams and this guy is an even bigger influence on his side now. His performances have been such a high level, I’m talking 9/10 every week, which is just remarkable.

Strikers can have an off day and still score a goal but this man’s level never drops and some of his goals and assists have been extraordinary. The amazing thing is Kane doesn’t seem to come into the equation because he is expected to score 30 goals every season.

This is a three-way chase for me, with Kane, Salah and De Bruyne in contention. I love the way De Bruyne has played this season but I’m edging towards Salah.

I say that because scoring all of those goals from a wide position is quite phenomenal. There’s not many who can score that volume of goals without playing centre-forward.

I’d probably go De Bruyne second and Kane third, with David De Gea unfortunate not be considered as he’s been invaluable for Manchester United, although it isn’t easy for a goalkeeper to win it.

Jeff asked us about this two weeks ago and Hazard was the subject of attention, but I wouldn’t have him near the top three now.

I’d actually have De Bruyne, Salah and Kane as my one, two, three. It has to be De Bruyne because of the way he has carried City’s form through when others weren’t so impressive.

Salah has been fabulous but so have Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane and he could have had 40 goals with the chances he’s had, whereas Kane has carried this Spurs side at times with Dele Alli being relatively average.

It is Salah all day for me. What he has done in his first season at Liverpool is phenomenal. Nobody would have expected that. Over 20 goals from out wide, while he’s also scored big goals in big football matches - he’s the complete package with his work rate and pressing.

You take Salah out of Liverpool and they’re much weaker whereas Man City can survive without De Bruyne. We’re talking about City being the best club team in world football so scoring seven goals out of their 83 lets him down.

You could put Harry Kane in the mix as he has been great again, but I can’t imagine anybody seeing this coming from Salah. I saw him at Chelsea and couldn’t have expected him to do so well.

Inside Track: Newcastle United

Show/hide article…

What’s the feeling like at the moment, heading into these last nine games?

There’s definitely a nervous tension around Tyneside, particularly given the 2-2 draw the other week at Bournemouth. I think if Newcastle had hung on down on the south coast then they would be a lot more confident, but the failure to keep those two extra points has dragged them back into things. So people are nervous, but with Rafa Benítez being in charge there is also a quiet confidence in part that he will be able to see them through.

They beat Manchester United at home last time they played at St James’s Park and they played very well, so it’s just about trying to replicate that level of performance. If they can do that then I think Newcastle fans believe they’ll just have enough to be able to survive.

How big is this game being viewed as up in Newcastle?

It’s huge for Newcastle, primarily because afterwards there’s a three-week gap before they play again, so they’re going to be a fixture behind most teams. After Southampton, it’s Huddersfield at home, so it’s two huge games, and given some of their fixtures in the run-in they really need to win when they’re playing teams in and around them. All of the players after the Liverpool game on Saturday made it quite clear that they’re targeting nothing less than three points this weekend.

I think everyone realises how important a game this is for Newcastle. There’s also the fact Newcastle’s home record is one of the worst in the division, and before the Man United game they hadn’t won since October at St James’s Park in the Premier League, so there is a bit of concern there and it’s just about how Newcastle can break down a team that’s in and around them, because they have struggled to do that at home.

How have the team been playing recently?

The form has been very good until they went to Liverpool on Saturday, and that was partly I think the way Benítez set up, to try to protect the goal difference, which is quite good, like Southampton’s is, compared to other teams down there.

But the two games before that, for 80 minutes at Bournemouth they were very, very good – they controlled the game and then had a ten-minute capitulation – and against Man United they were excellent throughout. It was probably their best all-round performance of the season, and the first time they’d beaten a top-six side. So they are playing quite well, and the only two teams they’ve lost to in the calendar year in the league are two of the most in-form teams – Man City and Liverpool.

It’s only two defeats in nine, so they are playing quite well. It’s just about finishing off their chances.

How do you expect them to approach this game tactically?

Benítez promised at the weekend that they’d be more attacking than they were at Anfield, but he’s always someone who’s very pragmatic. He likes his teams to be organised and disciplined, so I don’t expect a gung-ho approach, but I think they will try to get on the offensive.

He’ll probably play his usual 4-2-3-1 formation, but have a few players who are going to try to get the ball into the box and release Dwight Gayle, who I imagine will continue up front.

I think they realise they need to try to score early to try to quieten some nerves that might be around, so I think they’ll be more offensive than they normally are, but I wouldn’t go to the extent of saying they’ll be gung-ho.

Who will be their key players on Saturday and the ones Southampton will need to watch out for?

Jonjo Shelvey will be a big miss if he doesn’t play. There is still a slight chance he will play, but it’s looking unlikely because of a knee injury. He’s been key to Newcastle recently.

Jamaal Lascelles is very important to them defensively. He’s their captain, their leader, and he has been one of the most consistent performers all season and they’ve performed so much better when he is in the team.

Also, going forward, Dwight Gayle, just because he’s the one player you think can really grab a goal in this team, because it is a team that doesn’t score that many. They’ve only got 27 in 29. He got a couple at Bournemouth and if he does gain some confidence he is someone who could finish those chances, so he’s someone Southampton will have to watch out for.

Loan Watch: Targett helps to blunt the Blades

Show/hide article…

Targett played the full 90 minutes, as two Aleksandar Mitrovic strikes saw them take control before the break, before captain Tom Cairney added the third in the second-half.

The Whites’ unbeaten run now stands at 14 games as their hunt for an automatic promotion spot continues.

Harrison Reed was also involved in the midweek Championship action, playing the duration as Norwich and Nottingham Forest drew 0-0 at Carrow Road.

Daniel Farke’s men have now drawn five successive Championship games, which is their longest sequence of draws since 1994.

Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher came off the bench for Birmingham City as Garry Monk’s first game in charge ended in a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough.

Monk opted to partner Lukas Jutkiewicz and Che Adams in attack, with Gallagher introduced to the action on 60 minutes.

And Blues’ top goalscorer almost had the perfect impact when he engineered himself a chance, before dragging a low left-footed shot inches wide.

Saints’ survival bid not adding up

Show/hide article…

THE numbers are currently not adding up for Saints as they tread the relegation tightrope.

In the 22 campaigns since the Premier League adopted the 38-game season, an average of 38.5 points has been enough to finish 17th, the first survival position.

Currently, Mauricio Pellegrino’s strugglers are averaging just under one point per game.

That means, if the pattern of their campaign continues, Saints will record, give or take, nine more points from their remaining nine games and finish on a total of 37 points, which has often not been enough to avoid dropping into the Championship.

Of course, that’s simply what the numbers indicate and it’s difficult to truly draw conclusions from this considering every season is unique.

In 2013/14, for example, 38 points was enough for a 14th place finish, but in 2002/03 West Ham finished with 42 points and still went down – the highest total of any relegated club in the 38-game seasons.

On only seven occasions has Saints’ predicted 37-point total been enough to finish in the first survival position, while the lowest-ever tally for a 17th-placed team is 34 (West Brom in 2004/05).

Survival in the Premier League is by no means an exact science, except, that old cliché that the ‘magic’ 40 points mark is enough to stay up holds plenty of water.

Bolton in 1997/98 (40), Sunderland in 1996/97 (40), and the Hammers in 2002/03 are the only three clubs in 22 seasons to be relegated with 40 points or more.

Realistically, though, Saints are not going to reach the 40-mark unless there’s a notable turnaround in the direction their season has taken.

Considering their persistent failure to find any kind of momentum, a run of victories seems unlikely at this stage.

Saints join Stoke and West Ham as the only remaining teams in the Premier League not to win two consecutive league games this term.

Having lost just twice in their last nine top-flight matches, Saints are in some of the best form they’ve been in throughout this campaign.

In the form table they sit 10th, having collected seven points from their last six matches.

In most circumstances this would be enough to see a team bob along in midtable, but Saints are trying to make up for lost time, after missing a huge opportunity to build a base of points during an early favourable fixture list.

Saints played seven home games in their opening 11 fixtures and played only one big team, Manchester United, in that run.

Yet, with 13 points collected in that spell, they picked up one in win in their following 14 matches.

Now, they need a similar run to Swansea, Bournemouth and Brighton to start to secure their safety.

Carlos Carvalhal, a man heavily linked with the job at St Mary’s after Claude Puel’s exit last summer, has worked miracles at the Swans.

The Welsh side have taken 17 points from Carvalhal’s nine games at the helm, lifting them to 13th in the table, having been bottom after 20 games.

Brighton are sixth in the form table, collecting 11 points from their last six, while Bournemouth have nine points in the same run.

While still not out the woods in a congested relegation scrap, all the above three clubs are piecing together enough to stay up, although Swansea are still right in the dogfight.

There is starting to be a gap in the bottom half, with Bournemouth now six points clear of the drop in 12th place.

On 34 points, Eddie Howe’s side need six points from nine matches to reach the magic 40-point mark, so you can begin to discount them from the relegation dogfight.

That means, everyone below the Cherries is still well in the mix, apart from West Brom, who are eight points adrift of safety at the bottom. So that’s seven clubs all in danger.

Saints need a run of wins, but it’s not since April last year that they have achieved such a feat. Since then 37 Premier League games have passed without the club recording successive wins.
