Southampton ready to sack Pellegrino - with replacements already being lined up

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino is facing the sack at the end of the season even if he leads the south coast side to Premier League survival.

The Saints board have already started drawing up a short-list of potential replacements for Pellegrino – who has won just five of his 29 league games in charge.

Fulham’s Slavisa Jokanovic and Ostersund chief Graham Potter are among those on the radar.

Pellegrino has fallen way short of the target he was set when he replaced Claude Puel last summer, which was to challenge for a European place via the league.

The Argentine could become the second Saints boss in as many seasons to lose his job despite leading them to Wembley.

Saints, who under Puel reached the EFL Cup final, face League One high-fliers Wigan in the FA Cup quarter finals later this month.

Many Southampton fans want Pellegrino fired immediately but vice-chairman of football Les Reed is reluctant to make a change before the summer and risk a panic appointment.

U23 Report: Brighton 1-1 Saints

Show/hide article…

The hosts took the lead into the break thanks to Steven Alzate, but Saints rallied in the second-half and Armani Little’s header was enough to earn a share of the spoils against a strong Brighton side, which included Leonardo Ulloa.

The visitors began confidently, weathering early pressure before growing into the contest to create chances of their own.

But it was the hosts who had the first opportunity, when Ulloa saw his shot from close range charged down by Jake Hesketh.

Tyreke Johnson was prompted to roam forwards by an incisive pass from Michael Obafemi in the seventh minute, although Connor Goldson was across well to clear.

Hesketh was finding pockets of space, receiving the ball on the half turn, and inviting others to journey forward. The 21-year-old linked well with Obafemi in the 20th minute, but he couldn’t get a telling touch.

Saints were in the ascendancy midway through the half and could have been ahead when Callum Slattery latched on to a loose ball in midfield and forced a fine low save stopper Tim Krul.

Another chance fell the way of Nathan Tella shortly before the break, with Hesketh the provider once more. The forward tussled with a defender, before dancing around another and looping a ball central, where Tella headed in to the hands of Krul.

At the other end, a good chance fell to Seagulls forward Henrik Bjordal just before half-time, but his tame effort was saved comfortably by Jack Rose. That proved, however, to be the lift the home side needed.

And the visitors’ resistance was broken on the stroke of half time. Viktor Gyokeres stood a ball up to the back post, where it was met by Steven Alzate and inadvertently turned in to his own net by Alfie Jones.

Saints continued to probe for a leveller in the second-half, with half-chances for Obafemi, before they got their reward on 73 minutes. when Jake Vokins’ corner delivery was met by the head of Little.

Southampton ā€˜ready to axe manager Mauricio Pellegrino’

Show/hide article…

Southampton are ready to sack manager Mauricio Pellegrino even if they survive relegation this season.

The Saints lie in 17th and, according to The Mirror, the board have already drawn up a list of replacements to succeed the Argentine at the end of the current campaign.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic and Ostersunds’ Graham Potter are just some of the managers who reportedly feature on the list of potential successors.

The club had hoped to challenge for European football next season but instead find themselves scrapping it out in a relegation dogfight.

The board are understood to have grown tired of the poor results and should Pellegrino secure top-flight football next season, it still may not be enough to save him.

Claude Puel was given the axe last year despite leading them to the League Cup final against Manchester United.

The Saints hope to reach Wembley again this season — they play Wigan in the FA Cup quarter-final later this month — but their disappointing league form means Pellegrino has fallen way short of the club’s targets.

Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed is reportedly against sacking Pellegrino before the end of the season as he does not want to risk a panic appointment.

WATCH & VOTE: Premier League Goal of the Week

Show/hide article…

Take a look at the best goals from the week’s Premier League games and vote for your favourite.

There were some exquisite goals once more in the top flight and starting things off is Heung-min Son, who scored twice as Tottenham strengthened their place in the top four in the Premier League with a comfortable 2-0 win over Huddersfield at Wembley.

Both goals make the list along with Nemanja Matic’s stunning last-gasp winner for Manchester United against Crystal Palace on Monday Night Football.

Troy Deeney makes the list for the second successive week following his strike against Everton last weekend. The Watford captain beat the offside trap from Will Hughes’ excellent through-ball and fired high beyond Ben Foster with 13 minutes to go as Watford continued their resurgence with a 1-0 win against West Brom at Vicarage Road.

Finally, Riyad Mahrez’s stunning stoppage-time free-kick gave Leicester City a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the King Power on Saturday. With the game entering the seventh minute of injury-time, Mahrez stepped up to curl a 30-yard free-kick past Asmir Begovic.

Hit play on the video above to see each of the goals and then vote for your favourite below…

Josh Sims hopes to be Saints’ creative spark during ā€˜finals’

Show/hide article…

JOSH Sims hopes to be Saints’ ā€˜creative spark’ in the nine ā€˜finals’ that make up their daunting Premier League run-in.

With six away games – starting with this weekend’s trip to Newcastle United – and home games against Chelsea, AFC Bournemouth and Manchester City – Saints could not have a more difficult ā€˜back nine’.

Sims described the forthcoming trips to Newcastle and West Ham as ā€˜massive’ after the goalless draw against Stoke City.

He said: ā€œAll the games coming up now are almost like finals for us.

ā€œThe positive is we didn’t lose to Stoke.

ā€œIf we weren’t going to win we certainly couldn’t lose and we did that. We kept the clean sheet so have to take that into the next game.

ā€œWe’ve got to pick up a result at Newcastle.ā€

Sims made his only his second Premier League start, and his first since his debut 15 months ago, against Stoke.

ā€œIt’s obviously a difficult situation to come into but hopefully I can get the team going,ā€ he said.

ā€œI think I bring energy to the team so when I get my opportunity all I can do is be that creative spark in the team.

ā€œIt has been a long time since I started my last game.

ā€œI’ve had a bad injury since then so I’ve been through a lot in that time in between but I’m back now, fully fit.

ā€œIt’s good to get the recognition. I thought I played well against Burnley and I came on and sort of changed the game so I’m happy the manager has seen that and put me in the starting 11.

ā€œWhen you come into a situation like me you sort of get a free rein as a fresh face in the team.

ā€œWhat got me in the team was running at players and having a lot of energy.

ā€œThe fans like that so that’s what I have to keep doing and show the manager and fans why hopefully I can play more minutes.ā€

On the draw against Stoke, Sims continued: ā€œWe’re all disappointed we didn’t get the three points.

ā€œWe had lot of opportunities, especially in the second half.

ā€œIt’s a shame because if we played like that all the way through the game I’m sure we would have won.

ā€œ[At half-time] the manager got everyone together and said ā€˜look, you’ve got to liven up, move the ball quicker’ and we did that from the first moment of the second half.ā€
