Southampton have received no offers for star defender Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is a target for Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are all thought to be monitoring the Dutch defender.

Antonio Conte’s side are looking to bolster their squad ahead of a Champions League campaign next season, with Liverpool likely to be thinking along the same lines.

And Pep Guardiola is planning an overhaul of his backline as several ageing defenders have now departed the Etihad, namely Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna.

But the Daily Echo claim Saints have received no offers for Van Dijk as the summer transfer window looms.

Liverpool paper round-up: Reds defender to be used as makeweight in record deal?

Show/hide article…

Liverpool appear to have won the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk - more on that one below - and Mamadou Sakho could be included as part of the deal.

Dutch defender Van Dijk is set to be the latest Southampton player to swap the south coast for Anfield but this time Saints could be set to receive a player in return, according to the Telegraph.

They claim that the Reds will to and use players in a part-exchange deal, with out-of-favour Sakho will the top of their list.

Saints were reportedly interested in the French defender in January, but were put off by the Reds’ £30million pricetag.

He instead joined Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the season becoming a key part of the Eagles’ successful battle against the drop.

Liverpool have won the heavyweight fight with Manchester City and Chelsea for Virgil van Dijk .

The Reds will make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in football history, after the Holland international confirmed he has chosen them ahead of the two Premier League giants.

All three clubs have been talking with the Southampton star for the past few weeks, as they attempted to sell their vision of the future to the centre half.

But it was the charisma and enthusiasm of boss Jurgen Klopp that persuaded Van Dijk to choose the Anfield project, with people close to the player suggesting he was impressed by the passion the German coach displayed.

The Reds have declined to comment on any speculation surrounding the player, but we can reveal after Van Dijk made his decision, officials from the Merseyside club are now in talks with Southampton over the fee.

David Maddock has more here.

Andy Robertson has told Liverpool to wait to find out if they can land him this summer.

The Hull City defender has been linked with an immediate move back to the Premier League after the Tigers were relegated on the final week of the season.

Liverpool have courted the 23-year-old star as they look to solve their problems at left-back this summer.

Alberto Moreno lost his place in the team last season and was replaced by James Milner, who filled in despite being a midfielder by trade.

Liverpool have been looking to recruit this summer.

“The only thing I can really say is that all the players face uncertainty,” Robertson said.

Saints break half-a-billion earnings mark

Show/hide article…

Saints’ eighth placed finish last season has helped them break the half-a-billion mark in Premier League earnings.

Saints were paid a total of £127.6m in combined prize and TV money by the Premier League for the campaign just gone under Claude Puel.

That brought their total in the 25-year Premier League era to a staggering £540.7m.

Last season’s earnings puts into context the importance of the new TV deal.

The previous year Saints finished sixth in the table, though had three fewer live TV matches with 12 compared to 15 last time out. It all meant they only bagged £84.7m.

In a remarkable show of just how rich the division has got down the years, the very vast majority of Saints’ earnings have occurred since they got back in the top flight five years ago.

Saints have spent 18 of a possible 25 seasons in the Premier League.

In the first 13 of those before relegation in 2005 they bagged a total of £125.1m.

In the five years since they returned to the top division in 2012 they have been paid £415.6m.

The total of £540.7m puts the club 14th in the list of the highest overall earners in Premier League history.

However, their earnings are dwarfed by table toppers Manchester United.

They broke £1bn with the £143.6m they raked in during the last campaign.

Arsenal are second with £985.5m with Chelsea third on £968.6m.

Danny Mills blasts valuation of Liverpool and Chelsea target Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is expected to sign for Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City this summer

Van Dijk has impressed for Southampton since moving from Celtic.

He’s now set to take advantage of a lack of top class centre-backs in the Premier League by being able to pick his next destination at will.

Recent reports have suggested the Dutch defender could attract a massive offer from either Manchester City, Chelsea or Liverpool.

And a figure of £60m has even been touted around the 25-year-old.

But former Premier League star Danny Mills reckons that’s far too much for a player who’s yet to play for a top club.

GOSSIP: Liverpool clear favourites to sign Saints ace Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool appear to have edged ahead in the race for in-demand Saints defender Virgil van Dijk as the player has indicated he prefers a move to Anfield.

Several national newspapers today report that the centre-back has made his feelings on his future clear and has chosen Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ahead of interest from Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, a deal is a long way from being completed as the Reds have yet to make a bid for the player, with Saints expected to demand a world-record fee for a defender well in excess of £50million.

That would smash Liverpool’s existing record transfer, the £35million they paid for Andy Carroll.

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger recently said the club did not need to sell any player this summer, and privately they would be hoping van Dijk shows some loyalty having only recently signed a new long-term contract at St Mary’s last year.

Liverpool have refused to comment on the speculation surrounding the player and their interest in him.

But it is understood Van Dijk is Klopp’s primary transfer target this summer and would be willing to offer a lucrative financial package, potentially making him the highest-paid player at the club at around £180,000 a week, to secure the defender.

The chance to work with Klopp is believed to have been a significant factor in Van Dijk’s decision, despite similar opportunities being available with Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte.

Van Dijk has not played since January 22 due to an ankle ligament injury but has impressed since his move to England from Celtic in September 2015 for £11.5million.

Klopp is understood to want the Holland international to bring some authority and presence to his back four having struggled in that area in recent years.
