Romeu: ‘we can now play without pressure’

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu reckons Saints can now start to express themselves more after easing their relegation fears with a 3-2 comeback win at West Bromwich Albion.

The Spaniard was mightily relieved to climb out the drop zone and ease the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Romeu admits, however, that Saints still have a lot of “finals” to come in their bid to avoid going down.

He said: “It’s a sort of relief and happiness because we are looking for this three points for a long time.

“It will help us in the table because we were in a bad situation. We are not out of it, but it will be easier now.

“There will be less pressure to play and we can enjoy our games. We still have a lot to go and so many finals to be played. It will be difficult but we have to be more consistent and play like we did today.”

He added: “It was massively important to win and get the three points. We fought a lot. It was very hard. We put ourselves up 3-1 after conceding early.

“It was another cross and we didn’t defend it well enough for the goal. After that we defended well at 3-2 and looked at the counter attack to score a fourth but couldn’t. But the three points stayed with us and they are very needed.”

Romeu has now urged Saints to find some consistency. Pellegrino’s men are now unbeaten in six games but far from out of the woods yet with just two points separating them and the bottom three.

Saints face Liverpool on Sunday before a trip to Burnley, so the run-in won’t be easy.

“There are few points between positions in the table and we need to be consistent and get points home and away, especially teams that are near us,” he said.

“That will be a big difference – we are now six points away from them. It would have been another story if we lost today. It was massively important and we go again next week.”

There was a lot of emotion on Saturday at The Hawthorns as West Brom waved goodbye to club legend Cyrille Regis, who died last month aged 59.

It created an intense atmosphere, but Romeu was pleased with how Saints dealt with it.

He said: “We were not [overawed by the atmosphere]. It’s nice to see these things because this is football and we need to respect everything.

“He [Regis] was an amazing player in the past, but as soon as the game starts everything is gone. We work together. The start was not good but we carried on and got back in the game.”

Romeu admitted it wasn’t for Saints to stay calm in a thrilling encounter, which saw them go 1-0 down before coming back to lead 3-1 early in the second half.

Salomon Rondon scored for West Brom in the 72nd minute to set-up a tense finale, but Saints held on.

He said: “Yes we were calm.

"It was not easy because we knew winning today was all we needed. We’ve done well.

"We were not feeling well in our position, but we have been playing good football. We created chances and we are playing with skill and the way we wanted to before the match.”

After the Baggies went 1-0 up through Ahmed Hagazi in the fourth minute, Pellegrino was subject of chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ by an element of the away end at The Hawthorns.

In reaction to that, Romeu said: “I had a coach when I was young who said whenever you open your mouth, they will shut it.

“You never know in football, things change constantly in a matter of one or two actions. That’s what happened, we changed it around and carried on playing well.”

THE VERDICT: Pellegrino buys some time

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has bought himself time at the Saints helm just when it looked like it was about to run out on him.

The chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ after West Bromwich Albion went 1-0 up at The Hawthorns in Saturday’s remarkable 3-2 comeback win were like the tolling of the final bell on Pellegrino’s reign.

The Argentine was a bloodied boxer still in the ring but with his consciousness coming and going. What it felt like early at West Brom was watching the final painful throes of an uneasy time in Saints’ history.

But football has a funny way of throwing the unexpected at you, and by full-time Pellegrino was not hanging on for dear life anymore but noticeably buoyant in his post-match press conference.

With increasingly deafening voice of the fans calling for Pellegrino to leave Saints and someone new to come in, the 46-year-old has remained calm and collected.

It’s admirable and shows the man’s class that he hasn’t been drawn in to stronger statements. It was similar with Claude Puel.

Never did the Frenchman deviate from his narrative – no matter how dull it was – and step into a battle of words. Look how that ended.

Anyway, that’s the past, and Pellegrino’s a different man in a far more desperate set of circumstances. It’s no surprise the fans want him out.

He needed the win at West Brom badly and his team choice was a good one. He’s often struggled to find the right team to suit the opponents or the game scenario, but this was a good one just in the nick of time.

Guido Carrillo was the focal point in attack upfront on his own and while there were some loose touches from the £19.2m club-record signing, there were also moments where it was clear he could bring together this disjointed attack.

With Dusan Tadic, Sofiane Boufal and James Ward-Prowse close enough to him in attacking midfield, he wasn’t often isolated. There were also signs of relationships, especially with Tadic, who has history of building successful partnerships with big men striker, like Carrillo.

This section of the team is still a work in progress, but Pellegrino was pleased with what he saw from Carrillo at The Hawthorns and there’s reason for hope.

Further back in deep midfield, Oriol Romeu and particularly Mario Lemina impressed.

Sometimes it just takes a moment of genius to change the course of a match, a season even. Saints have often been without that moment of magic.

Boufal did just that late on against West Brom back in October, surging from his own half to score the winning goal in the 85th minute in the 1-0 win at St Mary’s.

It was the same for Lemina here. On 40 minutes, with Saints 1-0 down after Ahmed Hegazi’s fourth-minute opener, his glorious strike from 25 yards from Boufal’s lay off was utterly superb, a moment when you could feel that Saints had a fire in their bellies.

It felt like Lemina threw a cannister of petrol on this fire. His statement after Wednesday night’s miserable 1-1 draw against Brighton, talking of fight and saying sorry for their failures this season, was an indication that the Gabon international’s heart is in this fight.

He looked like that player he was when he ran the show in Saints’ 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in September.

An ankle injury set the 24-year-old back for some time, but he was back in style at The Hawthorns. He was quality and if he’s back to his old self, he could be massive for the club, especially if he can pop up with a few more belters like in this one.

Jack Stephens, who netted a stunning header, which lopped over Ben Foster, to make it 2-1 on 43 minutes is another important player in these times. He let go Hegazi for the opener from Chris Brunt’s corner and later said he owed the team a goal after that error.

Three vitals goals in three games – his only goals for the club – means he’s Saints joint-third top-scorer and, not only that, the passion he shows for the cause is excellent. He cares and it shows.

The 24-year-old, who has been at the club since he was 16, is a man you want in this relegation scrap and his past three goals and subsequent celebrations prove just that. His importance to the team grows on a weekly basis.

James Ward-Prowse, the longest-serving member of the team, was also in fine fettle at West Brom.

He combined with Stephens for the first goal, his wonderful corner finding the centre-back at the near post to head home.

Only Charlie Austin has scored more than Ward-Prowse (4) for Saints this season, and his free-kick goal, which made it 3-1, will only boost his growing confidence.

Of course, Saints are far from out of trouble and, as Pellegrino says, they must be humble. They must build on this result or they’ll be back in the relegation zone before they know.

Games against Liverpool and Burnley are to come now and they are not easy.

Pellegrino has come away with the bare minimum from a massive week, but the four points Saints did collect and the style of Saints’ victory on Saturday are promising.

There has been moments of promise already this season and they’ve turned out to be false dawns. It’s time for Pellegrino to prove the Baggies win is not just an anomaly.

Premier League hotlist: Mohamed Salah, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata

Show/hide article…

Who were the best Premier League players from the weekend games? We take a look at the man-of-the-match performances in our hotlist…

Ederson impressed in goal for City with his composure and two top-quality saves, but he was powerless to prevent Gudmundsson’s leveller, despite getting a hand to the effort.

Gudmundsson has been involved in seven goals for Burnley this season - three more than any other player - and his most memorable contribution of the campaign could well be this equaliser against the champions-elect.

The Icelandic winger backed up his goal with three key passes for the hosts, the highest passing accuracy of all Burnley players (77 per cent) and more interceptions (five) than any other player on the pitch.

Although he may have been on the losing side, Shaqiri produced a solid display for Stoke in what was a mostly even encounter, and produced a confident finish with his head.

He continued to work throughout the game, usually at the centre of most of Stoke’s attacking play and delivered some dangerous set-pieces.

He showed plenty of passion too, although he and Lambert must be sure to keep it under some sort of control after he was booked for dissent.

On an afternoon when Brighton’s attacking players proved too hot to handle for West Ham, it was the Colombia international’s stunning second-half strike which will live long in the memory.

With just two league goals to his name beforehand, the Hammers will have been forgiven for affording Izquierdo so much space midway through the second half, but he punished them with a clinical finish. West Ham were on the ropes when the strike flashed into the top corner, and it ensured there was no way back for the visitors.

Not only did the Swansea captain get his team back on level terms with a vital second-half header at the King Power, but the former Argentina international central defender also turned in a rock-solid performance at the back throughout for the visitors.

The Spaniard pulled the strings in midfield for United, providing four key passes, two more than the entire Huddersfield side.

His cross for Lukaku’s opener was superb, after a first half where United failed to gain any width in the final third Nemanja Matic was a close second in the man-of-the-match running, but Mata’s class told at Old Trafford.

A recent win over Brighton remains West Brom’s solitary Premier League victory in their last 24 games, and the chief conspirator behind their latest downfall was Ward-Prowse.

The midfielder has been Southampton’s stand-out performer during a disappointing season, and he will hope to grab the attention of England manager Gareth Southgate in the coming months.

Ward-Prowse has been directly involved in four goals in his last two away Premier League appearances (three goals, one assist), as many as in his previous 28 combined. His second-half free-kick proved decisive.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan came close to taking the honours after a fine all-around display, but Ramsey was the star of the show.

He got the ball rolling with the opening goal and then fired in to make it 3-0. He remained involved in the midfield throughout and confidently swept in to secure his first career hat-trick.

Crystal Palace dominated the second half and can count themselves unlucky not to have taken all three points after coming from behind. Their main threat came from wide areas and the two full-backs - Timothy Fosu Mensah and Van Aanholt - were both outstanding as they provided a constant supply line to targetman Benteke. We’ve given the nod to Van Aanholt for producing the best pass of the match in the ninth minute, putting Benteke through and forcing a fine save from Darlow.

The mesmerising Egyptian took his tally for the Premier League season to 21 with two very different finishes. After being gifted the opener by a stray Dier back pass, his second was a thing of beauty. With Liverpool struggling for ideas as the game ticked into added time, he twisted between two markers with an imperious piece of skill and poked home. It reminded many - including his manager - of a certain Argentinean playing for Barcelona. At this rate, he’s not too far off his level.

Southampton star should be playing for Arsenal: Wenger should’ve signed him - Crooks

Show/hide article…

Garth Crooks says Mario Lemina is an Arsenal player

That’s the view of BBC Sport pundit and ex-Tottenham forward Garth Crooks.

Lemina joined the Saints last summer from Juventus in a £15.4m deal.

The Gabon international has impressed for Southampton this season, netting once in all competitions.

However, Crooks reckons the St Mary’s star is destined to play for Arsenal, claiming Arsene Wenger should have signed the midfielder last summer.

“This lad is playing for the wrong team. Seriously. Mario Lemina is an Arsenal player if ever I have seen one,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

Throwing it away: West Brom have lost 18 points from winning positions

Show/hide article…

Whether this encounter proves a sliding doors moment will be judged in May but it certainly felt hugely significant for two relegation rivals who now have very different outlooks.

Southampton’s supporters told Mauricio Pellegrino he would be sacked in the morning when West Bromwich Albion took an early lead yet by the end they cheered a first win since November and a chance to breathe a little easier.

For all those associated with West Brom the pressure is becoming suffocating. Alan Pardew has enlivened the club since arriving without getting the results to match but this was a tired display amid an injury crisis and alarm bells are ringing.

Pardew’s team slipped to four points adrift of their nearest opponent at the foot of the Premier League table and although safety is the same total away, time is running out to mount some momentum for an escape.

‘We’ve lost 18 points from leading positions – which is too many,’ said Gareth McAuley of a problem that has plagued the side’s campaign. ‘That’s something we need address. Even if we had taken half of those points, it would have made a hell of a difference to our season.

‘It’s only a week since we won at Liverpool in the Cup, so this is not the time to panic – but it is time to get our teeth stuck into the fight we’re in.

‘There are 13 games left and we can’t afford to throw anything away. We’re going to need back-to-back wins somewhere to claw back that deficit. You can’t give up – it’s not in the nature of those lads in the dressing room. We’re going to need guts, determination, bravery.’

That defeat came on a day when Cyrille Regis was remembered so movingly only exacerbated the sense of despair. ‘It’s an emotional time for everyone at the club,’ added McAuley. ‘Cyrille was a huge figure around the place and it’s gutting to stand here having lost on the day we celebrated his life and everything he did for football.’

To begin with it seemed the emotion would carry West Brom to victory when Ahmed Hegazi nodded in Chris Brunt’s corner on three minutes. But Mario Lamina’s rocket, a Dale Stephens header, and James Ward Prowse’s free-kick turned the tide as Southampton showed commendable courage and creation. Salomon Rondon’s late effort was in vain.

Pardew was missing seven key players including Jonny Evans and Grzegorz Krychowiak and the West Brom manager delivered concerning news his captain would probably be out until the visit of Huddersfield on February 24. ‘Jonny has a bit of a nerve thing in his back so I can’t say for sure when he will return,’ Pardew said.

Southampton had begun to fear the worst during a 12-game winless run that saw intense scrutiny on Pellegrino and defeat here would have put the two teams level on points. But there was much about Southampton’s play to suggest they can pull away.

‘Relieved,’ said Oriel Romeu. ‘It was massively important to win. We fought a lot. It was very hard.

‘We were looking for this three points for a long time. It will help us in the table because we were in a bad situation. We are not out of it, but it will be easier now. There will less pressure to play and we can enjoy our games.’

The Southampton midfielder suggested those fans who called for Pellegrino’s head would have to change their tune.

‘I had a coach when I was young who said whenever you open your mouth, they will shut it,’ he said. ‘You never know in football, things change constantly in a matter of one or two actions. That’s what happened, we changed it around.’
