Vote for your Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

The voting is now open for the first Under Armour Player of the Month award of the 2017/18 season.

Saints enjoyed an unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign during the month, with a 3-2 home win over West Ham United sandwiched in between 0-0 draws at home to Swansea City and away to Huddersfield.

After two clean sheets in three games, centre-backs Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens, who claimed the last two awards of the 2016/17 season, are among the four-man shortlist.

Oriol Romeu, who won the prize on three occasions last month, has also enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign and is also one of the nominees.

Rounding off the shortlist for August is club captain Steven Davis, who has turned in some strong performances in midfield.

It’s up to you who the winner is, though! Simply use the form below to cast your vote…

Hurry, though, as the deadline is midnight on Wednesday night.

Bednarek makes senior Poland bow

Show/hide article…

Jan Bednarek came off the bench to make his senior international debut as Poland saw off Kazakhstan 3-0 in their latest World Cup qualifier.

The 21-year-old Saints defender replaced Krzysztof Mączyński during the closing minutes of the game in Warsaw.

Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik gave Poland the lead after just 11 minutes of the Group E clash, before a second-half strike from Kamil Glik and a late penalty from Robert Lewandowski secured all three points.

The victory sees Poland move two points clear of Montenegro and Denmark at the top of Group E.

Premier League will attract the top players in world football, says Christian Purslow

Show/hide article…

The world’s best players will be playing in the Premier League in coming years, according to Christian Purslow.

The Premier League generates over £8bn from global television rights, dwarfing the TV revenue generated by any league across the globe.

And former Liverpool and Chelsea managing director Purslow believes that will ultimately lead to the best players in the world coming to England in the not too distant future.

“I think we’re in the first phase of the massive financial superiority of Premier league clubs over all of their European rivals,” Purslow told The Business on Sky Sports News.

"The total television income of the Premier League per year is over twice their nearest rivals Spain, three, four, five times that of Germany, France and Italy.

"In any industry that economic advantage will ultimately tell. In the first phase what we are seeing is clubs keeping hold of talent that previously would have been sold for financial reasons.

"What we will see in the next phase is the Premier League [clubs] starting to sign the cream of the crop from Europe at the peak of their careers.

"I’m absolutely sure that will be the next phase. It simply cannot be true that the Premier League has such superior economic resources and not employ the most talented footballers in the world.

"And other aspects that had tilted the table away from the Premier League like privileged tax rates for Spanish footballers those are long gone.

"There are no tax advantages for Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to play in Spain. Those are long gone in fact the Spanish government is going after them for tax avoidance/evasion.

“So I believe in the next phase, over the next four or five years you will see the top players in Europe coming to the Premier League because of those economic considerations.”

Yoshida: ‘Pellegrino is just like Pochettino’

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida believes there are many similarities between Mauricio Pellegrino and one of his Saints predecessors, Mauricio Pochettino.

Having been at the club for five years, Yoshida has now worked under five different Saints bosses and reckons Pellegrino has the same attributes as the now Tottenham boss.

Pochettino was a widely popular manager at St Mary’s, leading Saints to an eighth place finish in the Premier League in his only full season, when he had his team playing a brand of exciting attacking football.

“Compared to last season you can immediately see we are more aggressive,” said Yoshida, when asked about Pellegrino’s style.

“We are more attacking. Last season we were defensively organised but a little bit too defensive.

“But we are trying to dominate games this season and most of the time control the game. Maybe we didn’t do that today [against Huddersfield] but in general that’s what we want in the Premier League.

“He has a good philosophy and we have to understand what we need to do and the training sessions are also really hard, but I had an experience under Pochettino which was similar and I’m sure if he continues like this we can develop.”

The 29-year-old explained why Pellegrino compares to his fellow Argentine.

“They both like to play football,” he said. “They like to press high and be aggressive.

“We have to fight for that. Our training sessions are really hard and similar [to Pochettino].

“Under Pochettino many players fly to another level and we need to take this opportunity to learn from that and have a good example to learn form. So why don’t we take this opportunity to improve ourselves?”

Having just penned a new three year contract at St Mary’s, the 29-year-old centre-back is ready to continue fighting for his place in the team.

Saints have signed Lazio centre-back Wesley Hoedt for £15m and also signed Jan Bednarek for £5m earlier in the window, so are well stocked at the back.

Virgil van Dijk could also return to the Saints fold too, so there’s certainly competition at central defence.

“I have no reason to leave the club,” said Yoshida. “I have been here for better or for worse in the last five years and still I have to fight for my position because two days before I signed my new contract they got another centre back.

“At this level in the Premier League everywhere you have the competition between the players, especially between Southampton centre-backs competition is very high.

“ But the competition makes us very strong. I have learned the last couple of years so I really welcome this kind of competitiveness between the players.

“I want to show my ability and character to the fans, the club and the manager.”

Five set for final day of internationals

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida is first up, as Japan take on Saudi Arabia in World Cup qualifying having already secured their place in the finals (6.30pm BST).

With that in mind, Coach Vahid Halilhodzic could field a more experimental side at Al-Ahli Saudi FC’S stadium.

Elsewhere, Mario Lemina and Gabon go up against Ivory Coast in Bouake after their reverse meeting just three days ago.

Lemina played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 defeat, which left Gabon in third place in the group on two points.

Later in the evening, Shane Long and Dušan Tadić are likely to go head-to-head in a crucial clash as Republic of Ireland meet table-topping Serbia in Group D (7.45pm BST).

Ireland go into the game after a 1-1 draw away at Georgia, with Serbia moving clear after their 3-0 success over Moldova.

Martin O’Neill’s men are just two points adrift of Serbia, but only two in front of Wales after Ben Woodburn’s strike proved enough for them to beat Austria in Cardiff.

Finally, Manolo Gabbiadini’s Italy take on Israel in their latest qualifier (7.45pm BST), as they hope to respond to their 3-0 defeat to Spain.

The Azzurri sit in second place behind Spain on 16 points, with Albania four points behind them in third.

Lightning Liverpool and Premier League playing styles

Show/hide article…

Examining Liverpool’s rapid counter-attacks and contrasting Premier League playing styles with new Opta data…

Gary Neville described Liverpool’s performance in their 4-0 win over Arsenal as “scintillating” - and their speed in attack will be a real worry for Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola ahead of Saturday’s Sky Live showdown.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed he was eager to add more pace to his squad when Mo Salah was unveiled this summer and the threat of Liverpool’s lightning counter-attacks was demonstrated by the new signing’s breakaway goal against the Gunners.

The Egyptian hit the net just 12 seconds after an Arsenal corner to make it 3-0 and Opta recorded the speed of Liverpool’s move downfield as 9.9 metres per second. That makes it the fastest move leading to a goal in the Premier League so far this season.

But it wasn’t a one-off. Of the fastest moves leading to open play goals scored so far in 2017/18, Liverpool have scored four out of 20.

This data comes courtesy of Opta’s new analysis of passing sequences and the speed teams can move the ball forwards, known as ‘direct speed’. The numbers also paint an interesting picture of the diverse playing styles among Premier League clubs.

Just three games into the new campaign there are significant differences between the sides already.

Stoke and Leicester, for instance, are the quickest at progressing attacks towards the opposition goal, with their moves averaging 1.99 metres per second. However, they use very few passes to do that. On average there are just 2.48 and 2.54 passes per sequence in their moves, respectively.

Of course, that style was a much talked about approach during Leicester’s Premier League title win in 2015/16. But compare their methods to Arsenal, who are among the top five teams when it comes to the speed (1.79 m/s) they move the ball downfield yet use 4.38 passes on average.

Simply, Arsenal - unlike any other Premier League team - move the ball towards the final third extremely quickly but with intricate passing movements. Indeed, Arsenal have played fewer long balls than any other Premier League side so far this season (48).

Liverpool’s attacks average a very high direct speed of 1.72 m/s, with a mid-range 3.49 passes per sequence.

Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham use a similar number of passes in their moves (4.48) to the Gunners but interestingly are much slower in moving the ball forwards (1.34 m/s). Spurs - who have the second highest passes per sequence total in the league - have a direct speed about 33 per cent slower than Arsenal’s.

Elsewhere, Everton (1.04 m/s) and struggling West Ham (1.05 m/s) are the slowest at moving the ball forwards. Curiously, the Hammers are averaging a similar number of passes per sequence as Burnley and Crystal Palace - who are among the quickest at progressing forwards.

While the sample size is small and teams have had different fortunes with different approaches, Opta’s passing sequence and direct speed data shines a light on a diverse league which presents sides with an array of challenges to overcome.

For Manchester City this weekend - themselves the team with the most passes per sequence - the potential threat from pacey Liverpool is clear to see.
