Was referee Jon Moss right to book Bournemouth’s Adam Smith?

Show/hide article…

Jon Moss was at the centre of controversy as he booked Adam Smith for simulation instead of awarding Bournemouth a penalty in their draw with Southampton.

Charlie Austin cancelled Ryan Fraser’s opener at the Vitality Stadium but, before that, a decision from the referee was the key talking point.

Smith stormed into the Southampton area on 30 minutes and appeared to be scythed down by Sofiane Boufal.

The majority of those in attendance expected Moss to point to the spot but he brandished a yellow to Smith for diving, much to the amazement of Cherries boss Eddie Howe.

“I think it’s a clear penalty, I really do,” he said. "At the time I had a good view of it and I think if the defender doesn’t get the ball he’s in trouble because he’s committed, he’s on the floor. Adam goes over his leg.

"I can’t work out what the referee has seen but that’s football, you live and die by those decisions and I think he’s got it wrong.

“It’s hugely disappointing because not only do we not get the penalty but we lose Adam to suspension and it has a knock-on effect to the next game.”

Ashley Young is becoming a leader at United - 10 THINGS WE LEARNED

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table after coming form behind to beat West Ham at the Etihad Satdium on Sunday.

Here, Sportsmail’s Ralph Ellis shares 10 things he learned from the weekend’s action throughout the leagues.

  1. Ashley Young has not only turned his Old Trafford career round after refusing to leave in the summer, but he’s developing a leadership role.

The 32-year-old, whose Manchester United contract runs out this summer, went straight to the bench to get instructions for the team when he realised that Paul Pogba was about to be sent off even before Andre Marriner had produced his red card.

And in added time he shepherded Jesse Lingard to the far side of the pitch when he was about to be subbed so that the change ate up as much time as possible.

  1. With only three Premier League goals so far, and talk of a search for a new agent, there’s gossip that Dele Alli has taken his focus off the sort of hard work that established his reputation at Spurs.

The stats suggest otherwise, though. Only wing-backs Kieran Trippier (7.2 miles) and Ben Davies (7.1) covered more ground than his 6.7 miles for Tottenham in their 1-1 draw at Watford.

And so far this season Alli has run an average 7.4 miles per match compared to 6.8 last season, while his average 74 sprints per game compares to 71.

  1. It’s not easy with such an array of talent at his disposal but Pep Guardiola has got to fit Gabriel Jesus into his starting line-up.

The 20-year-old Brazilian has begun only three of City’s lasts seven league games, despite the sort of form that saw him set up Nicolas Otamendi’s equaliser against West Ham.

In 24 Premier League appearances since joining City Jesus has been involved in 21 goals – scoring 15 and creating six. Break down his substitute appearances and it means he’s provided a goal every 74 minutes.

  1. Danny Drinkwater could have a huge part to play for Chelsea in the second half of the season after finally making his full Premier League debut.

The former Leicester midfielder, whose summer move to Stamford Bridge cost £35m, was excellent in the 3-1 win over Newcastle.

Full of energy – he made 70 sprints – he also showed the range of his passing that was crucial to Leicester’s title win, creating two good chances, and was involved in the build-up to one of the goals.

  1. Mason Holgate could be the big winner from the arrival of Sam Allardyce at Everton after getting picked ahead of £25m Michael Keane.

It’s the first time Holgate, just 21, has started a Premier League game in central defence in a back four this season and suggests Big Sam rates the young England star highly.

Keane has had to be content with a place on the bench while Holgate played alongside Wales captain Ashley Williams in both the 4-0 against West Ham and then Saturday’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield.

  1. It’s starting to look as if Manolo Gabbiadini will be on his way out of Southampton in the January window a year after his arrival.

The Italy international - signed by Claude Puel for around £17m - has become marginalised under Mauricio Pellegrino after a poor start to the season and played only the final five minutes of the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

Newcastle are among clubs said to be interested in keeping the 6ft 3in striker in the Premier League.

  1. West Brom’s players got cheered off at the end of the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace as Hawthorns fans reacted to a change of management after campaigning against Tony Pulis.

But forget any idea that new boss Alan Pardew is going to make radical changes to the style of play.

Albion attempted 379 passes against Palace – some 32 fewer than when they lost at Huddersfield in their last game against a side from outside the top six.

  1. Odd that Neil Harris never gets his name mentioned for bigger jobs after three years of success as boss of Millwall.

The 40-year-old who took the Lions back into the Championship following relegation has got them safely in mid-table on a small budget.

He showed how cute he can be tactically, too, in the 3-1 win over promotion chasing Sheffield United by switching to a back three at half-time when it was still 1-1.

  1. There can’t be many defenders in League One who learned their trade at Real Madrid, but Doncaster defender Niall Mason is the exception.

The 20-year-old signed for their academy aged seven when his parents were working in Spain, and was friends with David Beckham when he first arrived at the club as he was the only English speaker around.

Mason’s football education went on through Al Sadd in Qatar then Blackburn, Southampton and Villa as his parents moved around, ending up joining Doncaster last summer for a small fee following a loan spell. It’s working out well – he was outstanding in the 3-0 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe and has been earning rave reviews all season for his performances under Darren Ferguson.

  1. Credit to Kevin Nolan for respecting the FA Cup as his Notts County team faced minnows Oxford City in the second round.

The former Newcastle and West Ham skipper, whose first management job at Leyton Orient was always doomed to failure, could have been forgiven for resting half his League Two-leading players to face minnows Oxford City at home.

But he made only one change – restoring Jon Stead who had been injured for the 2-1 win over Colchester the week before – and just as well as it needed an added-time goal to snatch a 3-2 victory.

Redmond puts Guardiola showdown behind him

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond showed he was unfazed by the bizarre confrontation with Pep Guardiola as his half time introduction helped Saints to hit back and grab a draw at Bournemouth.

Guardiola’s odd rant at Redmond after City had scored a late winner against Saints at the Etihad Stadium attracted much attention in the football world.

Redmond started the game at Bournemouth on the bench, but was introduced at half time and made a big difference for Saints, including laying on the equalising goal for Austin.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino insisted he was never concerned with how Redmond might react to the situation.

“I don’t think so, it is just a comment,” said Pellegrino.

“One comment will not change the performance of one player or the team.

“The most important thing is how we play in the second half.

“We have to learn from this week which is really positive for the team and we have to look forward and see how we can improve in the future with this performance as a base.”

He added: “Nathan is an important player for us but after the other day I made six changes because I expect more player fresh.

“I imagine that it could be a really physical game and because I have got enough squad and we show that most of them deserve to play in this team.

“I think he played well and our reaction in the second half was good, especially in wide areas we arrived many times creating chances.

“We couldn’t score the second but we were really close. Also the opponent was close to a goal but our goalkeeper was really good today and saved a couple of chances.

“Both teams show from the beginning until the end that we want to win the game.”

There was a less positive moment for centre back Wesley Hoedt, after the £15m summer signing was caught in possession as Bournemouth scored the first goal at the Vitality Stadium.

“Obviously he is upset, but it part of our style of play,” said Pellegrino.

“Sometimes you have to realise that the opponent knows how are your qualities and they were pressing really well.

“We have to learn for the future to not make this mistake.”

While much focus is on Charlie Austin and his current goalscoring form, Pellegrino is still after more in an attacking sense from his team as a whole.

“I think the solution is to create chances, the solution is to move the ball with more tempo and arrive more with more determination to the box,” he reflected.

“Also the confidence of the striker is important but always it is not just to put the striker or to put bodies into the box but how to create more chances and to find different solutions.”

THE VERDICT: One point gained or two dropped?

Show/hide article…

Saints may well have left the Vitality Stadium wondering whether they had gained one point or dropped two against Bournemouth.

The battle for south coast supremacy is tighter this season than it has been for a long time, and with the two teams separated by just a couple of points in the table, chances were it was always going to be a keenly fought encounter.

Of course, any point away from home in the Premier League is a decent one.

But much like in the game at Brighton, Saints probably had that nagging feeling that they might have got a big away win to take back down the M27 with them.

There is a sense that Saints feel, from top to bottom, from board to fans, that they are the superior club.

It is understandable given history and tradition, the respective stadia, and even more recent league finishes too.

But football waits for nobody, and if Saints have been a little off pace over the course of the season so far, then that has closed the gap between them and Bournemouth, who are battling away as they have done since making it up to the top flight.

On the balance of this game, you still felt that Saints had the better players, the greater quality in the final third, but ultimately the result is king, and that was honours even.

Saints had waves of intensity, which resulted in waves of pressure on Bournemouth, and always looked as though they could go on to win the game. It was a positive performance.

In fairness to the Cherries, they did work Fraser Forster, and were as industrious as you have come to expect and with a little more could have taken the win themselves.

Despite Mauricio Pellegrino ringing the changes again, both in personnel and formation after the late heartbreak against Manchester City, it was a strong start from Saints.

Virgil van Dijk had the first chance on 12 minutes as he met an outswinging James Ward-Prowse corner just outside the six yard box but under pressure couldn’t guide a header on target, before Dusan Tadic’s effort from Jeremy Pied’s right wing cross produced the same outcome.

Fraser Forster had two big saves to make in as many minutes as Bournemouth got on top for the first time.

The first was a remarkable reaction stop, as the big keeper instinctively threw out his left hand and managed to swat over Jermaine Defoe’s shot that came via Adam Smith’s long range drive.

Moments later Lewis Cook provided a right wing cross that was met by a Nathan Ake header but Forster was able to push wide away to his right in slightly more routine fashion.

Both sides traded penalty shouts as Smith went down in the area after Sofiane Boufal had fully committed to a sliding challenge and failed to get particularly near to the ball.

Smith appeared to leave a foot behind to ensure he was tripped, but it was still a debatable yellow card for diving from referee Jon Moss when it did look a penalty.

After Asmir Begovic was forced into a first save of the game, pushing away Charlie Austin’s header, Saints appealed unsuccessfully to Moss for a penalty of their own as the follow-up from Tadic was blocked by the arm of Simon Francis but from point blank range.

Finally there was something to separate the teams three minutes before half time.

It was a horror moment for Wesley Hoedt, who was caught trying to turn back inside and relieved of the ball by Josh King.

He slid it square to Andrew Surman, whose first time pass outside found the overlap of Ryan Fraser and the Cherries midfielder swept home first time past Forster.

Boufal had chances either side of a half time break in which Nathan Redmond replaced Ward-Prowse, but skied a cut back and saw a low drive stopped by Begovic.

After some initial Cherries pressure as King fired wide and Junior Satnislas worked Forster, Saints really upped the intensity and turned the screw on Bournemouth, with Redmond out on the right providing fresh impetus.

It paid dividends on 61 minutes as Saints got an equaliser, Oriol Romeu winning the ball and feeding Redmond, whose pinpoint cutback found Austin having peeled off of Ake and gleefully finishing first time low past Begovic.

Saints enjoyed the greater dominance in the final stages, but both sides had chances to win it.

Forster did well to save from King but the rebound struck Callum Wilson and fortunately went wide before Ryan Bertrand whipped in a delicious left wing cross that gave Austin a close range header that he put off target.

The final kick of the game saw Ake head over from a corner eight yards out as both sides settled for a point.

It would be fair to say that there could have been more for Saints on another day. Bournemouth might argue the same.

But while four points from Everton at home, Manchester City away and Bournemouth away is a respectable haul, and there are welcome signs of progress, it is also short of fantastic.

It’s why Saints’ season has again teetered on the brink of lift off, but not quite made it into orbit, while it has also avoided a crash and burn scenario.

A draw ensures they remain in that realm for a little longer.

Austin grateful for Redmond’s role

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin has hailed the impact of Nathan Redmond after the England international set-up his equalising goal in the 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth.

Redmond was brought on at half time for James Ward-Prowse and lifted Saints after going in 1-0 down at the break, following Ryan Fraser’s opening goal on 42 minutes.

Austin, who is now Saints’ four-goal top-scorer, slotted in Redmond’s cut back to level and, in turn, salvaged a vital point for the visitors.

“Nathan’s a good pro,” the 28-year-old said. “He came on at half time and changed the game in our favour.

“It put a bit of pace in the team and went forward. He was a real part of us pushing forward and getting that assist for the goal and creating chances for us to go and win the game.”

“The first-half we were a bit sluggish and went in at the half 1-0 down and rightly so,” he added.

“But second half we put in a good performance and looked the stronger team second half and, if anything, we looked like we were going to snatch it.”

Austin’s goal, his third in two starts, was greeted with a negative reaction by the Cherries support in the Ted MacDougall Stand at the Vitality Stadium.

The former QPR man used to play nearby at Poole Town and in 2009 nearly signed for Bournemouth.

However, a transfer embargo meant he couldn’t join the Cherries and ended up at Swindon Town instead.

“I’m not too sure why,” Austin said, when asked about the Bournemouth fans’ reaction to his goal. “It’s not my fault, if anything I was going to sign here.

“Eddie (Howe) and (assistant manager) Jason (Tindall) did everything they could to sign me and I would have signed.

“But like he (Howe) said during the week, he couldn’t stand in my way and I’m forever grateful for letting me go and giving me the chance he did.”

“I’ve got family here, but it’s not strange,” he said, when asked what it was like to score against a club he’d previously had a connection with.

“I never signed for the club. If things were different and they weren’t in the situation they were in, then I would have signed for them.

“But, for me, whoever I score against I like to score goals. That’s what I’m in the team for.”

Austin, who eventually signed for Eddie Howe at Burnley in 2011, is now enjoying being back as the centrepiece of Saints’ attacking arsenal.

The £4m striker made his second start of the season at the Vitality Stadium, having spent the early part of this season as an impact substitute.

He was first in the starting 11 in the 4-1 win over Everton last week, but was then rested in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, before being reinstated at the Vitality.

“I’m delighted and more importantly putting in big performances for the team and scoring the goals,” he said. “Like I say, I’ve always had the belief and confidence in myself I will score goals. And going forward we’ve got a big period coming up. We know Christmas time is big.”

“I feel good. I’ve got more momentum, more game time and I’m helping the team,” he added.

“The manager knew what he was doing midweek. He pulled me in and told me what was going on.

“As a striker you want to play, you want to keep scoring goals, putting in performances for the team and luckily I’m doing that at the moment.”

Pied hungry to build on Sunday’s return

Show/hide article…

The Frenchman produced a strong performance in his first full 90 minutes of action in the Premier League this season and may well be a key figure for Saints throughout a busy Christmas period.

Sunday’s stalemate marked a positive step for Pied who is looking forward to staking a claim for the right-sided berth left vacant by the injury of Cédric Soares.

“I tried to give my best against Bournemouth and to play a smart game, not just pushing forwards all the time but also concentrating on my defending. It was a good step for me and I am looking forward to continuing in the team."

Inspiration came close to home from team-mate Pierre-Emile Højbjerg whose strong showing against Everton the previous weekend demonstrated that opportunities will come to all members of the Saints squad if they are ready to make the step up.

“It is not easy being on the sidelines but as a member of this squad, it is your job to support the team in whatever way you can. Pierre showed the perfect example against Everton: you come in, you play and you take your chance.”
