There is a bit of a common theme in many of your posts which seem to contain that condescension in an effort to convey a sense of wiser intellect… you write and present your opinions eloquently and in a well reasoned way so it’s really not necessary… anyway, I could also face palm as you have completely missed the point of what is a simplistic cartoon. It’s not about ‘missing’ the point of the. Spirit of the law, nor in dimissing the value in countering hate and vile with reasoned and compelling responses - I have consistently talked about ignorance being the mother of hate and it is only through education that it can be overcome. That starts with the very intelligent response you highlight. But this cartoon is not about that. It’s simply about countering those who cry ‘freedom of speech’ when excluded for other reasons. There are times and places where the constant presence of loudly voiced hateful and vitriolic, racist or bigoted opinion is simply not appropriate. Would you want to have such debate at every meal time if one of you kids was a racist? The ‘spirit’ might be to counter at every opportunity, but there is truth in ‘time and place’ to have more effective and rational debate. I just happen to find it disappointing that Barry attempts to weave in his transparent opinions into virtually every thread no matter what… especially when it’s just Trolling . In which case that cartoon is apt. Trolling is just folks being arseholes for their own amusement, and there is no legal or spirit of the law that means folks should feel morally obliged to listen or read it.
As an aside there is also a philosophical argument to be had about how much voice you give to those who are intolerant . A debate that says we should not tolerate the intolerant as if we do they ultimately win… which brings the US issue of Sinclair media. The law says there is no issue, but is it right that such a large majority of media outlet can in effect be a vehicle for a narrow and unpleasant agenda? When there is no opportunity to counter what is braid cast into your home?A propaganda vehicle? Yes it provides opportunity to educate your kids against this but what when you are not there? Do you simply turn it off , or should the merger be banned in the first place? Both of these are outside the spirit which you rightly point out is what we should be advocating.
