I reckon Smith is the most dangerous they have for the 5 day game.
Warner has looked a bit more patient in this world cup but I reckon he’s better suited to the 1 day game. He’ll get frustrated if we pin him down.
Bowling wise, yep, Starc is dangerous and Cummins can keep it tight but I would much rather have the England attack.
High hopes for the Ashes.
We are a far better team and this Ashes will depend on Smith, if he bats for a day like he can he then brings his bowlers into play, his averages are amazing, as far as attacks go yes indeed but Starc can do it himself.
I didn’t say we had better though did I. With the possible exception of Smith we certainly have players as good as the other two. Root can’t be far behind Smith. Starc? If we are going on stats Jimmy Anderson pisses all over him. Stats are only meaningful if you are comparing players with the same length of career and number of games. For example you can’t say starc is a better bowler than archer in 2019 because stats don’t lie. Daft. Likewise root and Smith, Smith has had a longer career than root, the only way you can argue one is better than the other based on stats is when both their careers are over.
No I think you can safely argue now Smith is in a class of his own, 3rd best of all time as it stands. Root isn’t anywhere near that.
Yet.
Averages are averages and he ain’t gonna improve that much!
Maybe, but you don’t know that. Root has plenty of years left. Starc v Anderson? Jimmy isn’t just 3rd best, he’s number 1. According to the stats.

In test cricket? Cummins is above Anderson?
Cummins is number 1at the moment in a month or two someone else will be. He’s played 20 tests, taken 94 wickets. Anderson 148 tests, 575 wickets. More than any pace bowler. Very unlikely Cummins will get close. You might as well argue that when Smith is coming to the end of his career and a young English batsman in his prime moves above him in the rankings, that makes him a better player. Stats are only meaningful when both players are retired and they can be compared.
Perhaps an Ashes thread is needed.

I still have to say Root will never get close to Smith for averages, he’ll have to hit so many more 100’s, he just doesn’t go on like Kohli, Smith etc etc and we’re overlooking Kane Williamson who is genuinely World Class as well.
