Glastonbury 2017

Corbyn reached out to the middle classes appearing and well done Jezza, the working classes couldn’t afford to go are already behind him.

I doubt very much that Barry was born when Glastonbury started out. By all means complain about the change but you may as well then complain about everything because the whole world has changed since 1970. As for becoming a victim of its own success? How so? It is a festival. Bands play music there. There are lots of interesting things to do there. People go. What really has changed other than it is the biggest festival in the country. Or are we saying that festivals were only ever frequented by the “working class” and now only by the “middle class?” What the fuck is the working class now anyway? Surely it has become anyone who works?

As I said, ageist. Listen to yourself. Soon you will insist that all residents of the UK have to have blond hair and blue eyes! So much for tolerance and everyone intermingling. And you say that you are not devisive? Jeez. It is just a feckin festival. All through the ages people of all ages and backgrounds have attended these types of gatherings and now you want to exclude some parts of society from joining in? Please tell me this is a wind up.

Define “the woking classes” and provide proof that no one in that demographic went to Glastonbury please.

Only 2 people went this year? Small gavering.

You’re right, it must have been shit(bbc pictures must be fake news).

Wonder were all the people on here that thought they were there, really went?

It’s all a conspiracy :lou_facepalm_2:

Very good Barry. I walked into that. But you still need to answer the question. Do you really believe that the class system as was still exists? For me it doesn’t. Outside of the Royals there are just people with varying amounts of money.

I would have thought the main reason why a lot of younger working class kids don’t go is because they just can’t afford it. The best part of 250 quid for a ticket, plus transport, spends etc is a big lump for them to find. Of course the Tarquins and Arabellas will always be treated by the bank of mum and dad, but for most people that is not an option. For those whose parents are in jobs on the minimum wage or zero hours contracts, and when we have the likes of nurses etc, once considered a reasonably paid job, now using food banks, it is blindingly obvious that finding a sum of 400 odd quid for a weekend away is out of the question, a non starter. Millions of families are just managing to keep their head’s above water on a week to week basis. Treats such as a weekend at Glastonbury, although affordable in their budgets a decade ago, is now just a pipedream in the reality of everyday lives in 2017. It really isn’t rocket science.

I agree, how many volunteers for wateraid came from the Flowers Pap?

Dreamworld these lads on here.

Ask the working poor whether they believe there is one?

You didn’t quite get that did you SOS…

Considering the festivals are commerical operations, it seems pretty fucking daft to discourage the older middle classes - they are the ones with all the cash these days.

If you cut out their contribution, you would have the Wurzels headlining

I think I’ve finally worked out what @barry-sanchez is finally getting at.

He’s saying that Glastonbury should be aiming itself at the people with “not much money” and that if that means that the “class” of acts on show is reduced so be it!

However this would not stop the “middle class” going as they go to Glastonbury for the props not necessarily because they like the music.

@barry-sanchez would then suggest that you restrict the age range of people buyig tickets so more of the “lesser” earners can go.

I don’t think he’s railling against it being conformist or anything like that.

N.B. I put @barry-sanchez 's posts through Google translate so this may or may not be what he means

He’s saying that it should be for the young and the working classes/ less well off…of which he it’s neither but he still wants a ticket. Just no one else like him should be there. Or something. It’s nonsense and I don’t even think he believes it, he’s just having his bit of bazza fun.

Not the same as working class though is it? Isn’t it entirely possible that someone who is poor isnt actually working? Not sure how that relates to working class so maybe we can have your definition of “working class?”

I didnt go so I dont know if the place was full of Tarquins and Arabellas but several people from here went and I am sure they would see themselves as cast members from Made In Chelsea (with all due respect). Reading costs £200 if you camp. Is that also a middel class bash only? People find the money for what they want to do, whatever their social status. Nothing is cheap nowdays. The cinema used to be a cheap night out, not any more. Fish and chips is no loner a cheap meal. There was a time when you could watch a football match and get there and back with your pocket money. Football grounds are always full - dont tell me that the “poor” dont go to premiership matches. For the vast majority of us price increases have outstripped wage increases for a number of years but people still smoke, drink and go out. I am sure that many people are priced out of certain activities, but that has always been the case. I think, these days, a lot more people have the means and opportunity to do these things.

No. Sorry not buying that argument.

Me & 2 mates went. One of those - asked me if my mate would let his son come & camp at his gaff.

The Son is just graduated from Uni. In total 30 of the kids in his year applied for and got tickets.

Of those 10 missed their budget away and lost their tickets. However the other 20 had scrounge and worked weekends andevening bar shifts to scrape together the ticket money & 20 quid a day cash budget. Most camped inside mates son + 1 took the plastic bottles of Lidls vodka & case of Strongbow in each day to keep the kids stocked up.

I suppose students at Uni are all too old or middle class? Or the dock would say they should be on benefits not working.

And anyway wtf is working class now? All your manufacturing is done offshore manual labour by Poles or other immigrants.

Mates of my work at Nissan and are Robotics Engi errs with MAN’s

Perhaps the dock means we should force Davis to only allow benefit claimants into Glasto.

Oh and obviously we should stop access for the disabled. Those mobility scooters donated to them by charities just clog up the pathways and the bloody portaloos on their viewing platforms stink the place out.

Yeah leave all festivals for the E Europeans and other working class human trafficked into UK. And make the rich pay for it.

Oh and obviously only pay the acts 10% of their normal fees…

You are so so out of touch, football isn’t a working mans game anymore, how can it be? Look at the prices, how can a family go all the time to that?

Bank of mum and dad, graduation presents and simply having money is how many ya ya’s get to Glastonbury.
Their parents reliving or actually living a life they dreamed of 30 years before go and dilute the atmosphere.

Let’s talk cost.

£240 quid. I watched 20 shows so £+2 per show.At home in Dubai an average gig like New Order cost £65 + £50 In taxi fares.

GnR (who were shit compared to Foo Fighters) cost £90 quid BASIC entry 75m from the stage

I “wasted” £45 on the annual Tee Shirt & tea towel & £3 on a flower head band for Mrs D_P. Money that I or any student wouldn’t have needed to spend

I then spent £25 a day on food & booze. £5 more than the kids but then we had full English each day at the campervan - which belonged to a mate

So I had a 5 day vacation for which I saved for 3 months by not going to the pub (£10 a pint) and taking a packed lunch to the office every day.

I’m now in rehab at a mates pad in Costa del Sol (£48 return) for a week. I’ve been on the beach & couple of bars since I’ve been here. I’ve met plumbers & gas fitters. A bricklayer, a white van man and a DHL delivery driver plus a railway driver.

Strangely all of them are working class and are on a vacation oh and all own property down here.
