If Jose has been told “Nah, bollox, you aint going anywhere.” and accepted that, then I don’t understand why he wouldn’t just sign the new contract. Bearing in mind it is just a pay rise and not a contract extension…It would be cutting off his nose to spite his face if he didn’t. Basically a no brainer.
So does that mean that there is genuine interest from Utd and he and his agent are engaged in a Mexican stand off (or would it be a Portuguese stand off in this instance??) with Lesley to get MORE money?
Alternatively, he has been told “OK we will sell your ass but not until deadline day once we have a replacement. Gardos only has one good leg and playing Yoshida is not an option so please put in some graft until you go son”.
I don’t have a clue to be honest and none of the above scenarios would surprise me in the slightest. This is a summer transfer window at Saints after all.
So I understand, If a player leaves and doesn’t put in a transfer request, the club is required to pay the player the remainder of their contract. They usually build this into the fee from the buying club.
The wages the club are able to offer are limited by the financial regulations they are now required to adhere to. To get around this they are offering players increasingly long contracts, hence Forster and Van Dyke etc signing up for so long contracts. Basically the club are saying we can’t pay you what you want right now, but we’ll make sure you get the money when you leave. Read from that, that the guys we signed up to long contracts will leave soon enough.
I speculate that fonte is already a top earner. So he can’t be paid any more. The only way he can get more money is to sign an extended contract.
Club are not particularly keen to do that because due to his age is value is diminishing and the likelihood of turning a profit on him when they sell him in a year or two is low. In fact they may end up losing money on him to pay off his contract. Hence fontes hand is forced such that he must go to a big club that can pay him big wages by virtue of the less stringent financial regulations which apply to them. Hence Everton, man u, arsenal links.
Surely this fair play thing is a restriction of trade and could be challenged in court.
Why should the so called bigger clubs that were paying higher wages before it was brought in still continue to do so, they should all either have the same value cap or none at all. % of turn over went out the window with the last TV deal.
It only applies to clubs that decide to take part in a private league. They can leave the league and pay their players whatever they want. So no legal issues.
Similar to franchises and the like, they must conduct their business in accordance with a set of rules and guidelines if they want to be part of the group.
I agree that it is entirely biased to the big clubs, however.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to wait until deadline day to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte, 32, although Saints are unwilling to let him leave.(Manchester Evening News)
Seriously what difference does it make if it’s deadline day or any other fucking day.
It’s like the last day has some magical powers and we’ll suddenly be so desperate to offload him that we’ll bend over, spread our sphincter and tell the Special One to go ahead…
Southampton have told Jose Fonte that he is staying put at the club this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
The report says that Southampton have told Jose Fonte that there is no scenario in which he will leave the club this summer, with the transfer deadline now just eight days away from closing.
Southampton have offered Fonte a new two-year contract, and will be hoping that the captain accepts the new deal to further commit himself to the Saints cause.
There is a contract on the table for Fonte, with the club currently negotiating with the skipper over a new deal.
Fonte won the European Championships with Portugal this summer, which has led to speculation over his short-term future with Southampton.
However, the Saints are still confident with the situation and expect him to sign a new contract, rather than leave the club, according to reports earlier this summer.
Not that I believe the Mail particularly, but I do get the feeling that we will not let Fonte go so late in the window, even if the Special One does think he can nab him on deadline day. There is no way that we would go into the season with Yoshi as regular starter.
What if Rojo was included in the deal? Maybe he is the one who needs convincing and wating until deadline day - rest of the season in reserves or transfer/season loan to saints - choice is yours. Will be more effective when Jim White has his shit yellow tie on.
Meanwhile, Jose is so overwhelmed with joy and emotion at staying that he hasn’t had a chance to express his happiness on FaceBook or even open a new Twitter Account
I personally don’t think that we, as fans, get involved enough.
The minute one of these stories breaks, we need a 24 hour karaoke team stat, at every affected players house, singing “Please Don’t Go”. If they make it as far as Finch Farm or Melwood, the likes of Barry and I will take over.
