🏏 :engerland: England in South Africa 2019-20 🇿🇦

Faf du Plessis (these South Africans do have the oddest names) has gone for 19, caught by Denly off the bowling of Bess. Big wicket, that. It’s now 164/4.

Saffers digging in

If nothing else, and even if they end up losing the match - still a strong possibility - the South African batsmen have shown ours how it can be done. Faced with an impossible (or pretty much so) total and masses of time, bat for survival and keep on doing it. Then do it some more.

They’re showing highlights from the test, at Centurion, that finished 10 years ago to the day, England in a very similar position to the Saffers now and they dug in, lost 9 wickets but managed to draw the test…

Yes! Curran has Malan caught in the slips by Stokes (natch) for 85. So that’s 171/5 now.

Rank long hop from Denly, smashed straight to short mid-wicket where Crawley snaffles it.

A badly needed wicket

Love the ESPN commentary

Denly to de Kock, OUT , another brain-fart! Denly has done de Kock with the long-hop! Crawley at short midwicket clings onto a screaming pull above his head, and for the second time in an otherwise immaculate rearguard, one of South Africa’s linchpins has given it away with a surfeit of aggression! The shot was on, insofar as he had to hit it somewhere, so why not to the rope, but the trap was also set!

Wasted review :-

Denly to Philander, no run, padded away, and England are very excited about this! Did the ball roll up his body and flick the glove through to silly point? We are going to the review … nope, that looks like elbow … nope, it’s not even elbow! Missed everything by a foot! Whoops …

Saffers aren’t going to make the 200 needed runs so why aren’t the England bowlers bowling AT the wickets.

They’re just leaving 75% of the balls bowled at them…

vd Dussen gone 17 (140b 194m)

Superb captaincy by Root, leg gully put there the ball before and the ball goes straight to him from a ball bowled down the leg side.

What we could do with now is a bowler who can deliver a few fast, straight yorkers. Stokes might just be the one for that. Let’s hope so.

6 men around the bat for Bess bowling to Philander…

Pretorious gone 0 (22)

c Root b Stokes

Slight movement from a full length ball that takes a thick edge straight to Root.

Anrich Nortje goes first ball

c Crawley b Stokes

And what a fine catch from close fielding, finds the outside edge again, Crawley sticks out his right hand to push it into the air where he grabs it with his left.

241-9

Hat-trick ball for the 2019 SPOTY

by 189 runs and Stokes, fittingly, gets the last wicket.

Short, hostile, takes the bat and goes to gully where Bess pouches it.

Would you like some of this??

Yeah Test Cricket in general, and the 5th day in particular, remains rubbish. Scrap it and bring out some nonsense to entertain under 5s please
