Creepy gone
Mark Taylor berating Aussie bowlers gets the wicket
Missed the Root wicket
Joe Root b Hazlewood 5 (11)
15.3 chopped on! Hazlewood gets in on the act. Root falls looking to play his favoured back-foot dab, and England’s bright start has quickly turned turtle. Short of a length, seams back in as Root plays with an angled bat, the ball hits the inside edge and cannons down into the base of middle and off stumps
73-3
Now 138-3 after Brooks makes his 50 in 46 balls.
Hazlewood to Brook, 1 run
84mph/136kph, good length, jagging in, it comes off inside edge and clatters into the back thigh, it stings, but he hobbles down the other end for a single as it rolls into the leg side
but wait
Brook was uncomfortable but Moeen Ali has pulled up really sore after that run. He has hurt his groin. He has called for the medical staff to come out. We will be delayed here. Moeen is getting assessed by the physio. He is in some discomfort. He’s taking a pain reliever in pill form. But he is set to continue.
173-3, 100 run partnership between Brook and Ali (from 102 balls)
Not if you are playing cricket.
193-5 Stokes goes for 3
Bairstow hangs the bat outside off stump gets an inside edge and gone
270-9
Gloomy floodlights on good time to get bowling.
Par at Oval is 280 this season choosing to bat 1st
4.27pm Innings break England all out for 283.
Not sure either side would be entirely satisfied with that but both would feel it is a decent result in some ways. Australia dropped five catches and conceded more than five runs per over after winning the toss in superb bowling conditions. England were 184 for 3 and lost 7 for 99. Harry Brook was the star with 85 although he was dropped by Carey on 5. Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and the two openers all made starts without kicking on. Batting looked challenging at times but there was value for shots. England will be very pleased to get nearly two hours to bowl tonight. Big challenge coming for Australia’s openers.
What a catch by Root to get rid of Labusarse.
About 6 runs off 200 balls
Should have been Bairstow’s catch.
137 -4
It should have been, but he didn’t even move.
Anderson gets one 151-5
170 -6
186-7. Wood bounces out Starc. Meanwhile:

Wrong
Another Bairstow howler. Missed a run out (Smith) bu taking the bails off before he had the ball.
I think Howler is a bit harsh. Smith thought he was out. 3rd umpire took ages to study it. Even now lots of people think Smith was out (not me) but it was ridiculously close
Edit: Smith gone now 239-8
