Hywel Bennett has croaked. He used to be in lots of “mucky” films that I had to lie about my age to get into in the late 60s.
What was that tv series he was in?
Shelley.
He was also very good in the Neverwhere BBC2 series.
Played Rickie Tarr in the original series of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”
Yeah my Dad said he was a very friendly man. They were out on The Solent together the day the “Mary Rose” was raised, he was a very knowledgeable history buff as was my Dad.
RIP Robert Hardy.
Hywel Bennett starred in a film called Percy in the early 70s (along with films like The Virgin Soldiers). Percy was the name he gave to his penis transplant. He lost his in an accident early in the film and spent the rest of the film finding out where his “new” penis had been before. All very tame by today’s standards and typical of the seaside postcard type humour, but quite racy for the times.
Glen Campbell dies aged 81…sad end for an influential writer/performer…RIP Glen.
Not a great fan of C & W but Galveston and Wichita Lineman are two great records. I didnt realise that he was such an accomplished guatarist/session muscian. So sad to read about his struggles with dementia in later life. RIP cowboy.
Wichita Lineman.
Lineman is a tradesman who constructs and maintains electric power transmission and distribution lines. At a guess, I’d say this is the only popular song ever written about this particular occupation.
Define popular, @bathsaint .
I’m a country lineman
On a high line, on a high line
So will be my grandson
There are power lines in our bloodlines
Apparently the guy who wrote the song said it was inspired by rows of telegraph poles with a bloke stuck up the end one. He said it was a vision of loneliness. Depends what he was doing up the pole though. He might have been listening into to people’s conversations.
Let’s not forget of course that he was once a Beach Boy. In 1964 when Brian Wilson had a breakdown, Glen Campbell joined the band and toured with them. He was offered a permanent place in the band but turned them down, instead signing a solo deal with Capitol. The great guitar work on Pet Sounds was played by him, He also supplied the guitar work for hits and albums by artists as diverse as The Monkees, Nat King Cole, Simon and Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. The US version of Jimmy Page. Interestingly he also acted alongside John Wayne in True Grit, so a proper all-rounder.
Hmmm, looks like quite an aspirational job in the U S of A!
Can a telegraph pole be defined as a ‘pylon’? Asking for a friend.
Sad to see that Bernard Kenny has died of cancer - he was the old fella who stepped in and tried to save Jo Cox when she was attacked.
Second this …
Brucie is dead. Long live Brucie!
Et tu Brucie…the grand old stager dies at 89. RIP Sir Bruce.
