Graham Taylor.
I think he was a good man who was out of his depth - will always be remembered for his appalling tretament by the media - and for telling the linesman that he’d just got him sacked.
He was right.

He did not like orange from that day on… and the fact that Calton Palmer could not ‘knock it’!
I was deeply moved and upset watching a documentary about Taylor once. I was off my tits on LSD at the time, but think I would have felt the same if I wasn’t. Destroyed unfairly by the media.

Possibly he was out of his depth but the 2-2 draw against Holland at Wembley still remains one of the best displays I’ve seen by an England team. Gazza ran that game against a very decent Dutch team until he had his cheekbone broken.
Also robbed in Rotterdam when RK dragged down Platt. Also hit post and bar.
Put in a great performance in a mentally intimidating atmosphere in Turkey too (first and only time I’ve seen opposition fans with guns)
He was unlucky in short. And, as you mention, didn’t deserve the shit he got.
Although Taylor may be unkindly remembered for his spell as England manager, his record at club record was a lot more than decent. Took Watford from Division 4 to second in the League (plus of course an FA Cup final); took Villa from Division 2 to second in the League a few years later. Then came England. After England, he got Watford into the Premiership (which entailed another two promotions).
Perhaps his greatest mistake was agreeing to the fly-on-the-wall TV programme that documented England’s abortive World Cup qualifying campaign. The result made him look a total idiot, which he clearly wasn’t.
Not quite - Phil Neal looked a total idiot, Taylor just looked foolish for having him on the bench with him.
Here’s a sad one - it’s just been announced that Larry Steinbachek of Bronski Beat died last month.
Great synth band of their time.

Actor Gorden Kaye, best known for his role in the long-running BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!, dies at the age of 75
goodbye goodbye
I am sure he must have been in a lot of things but that is the only programme that I rememebr him in. Still, it must have been a hard gig having suspender clad thighs thrust at you every week. I could never understand why a dodgy looking middle aged bloke was getting so much action whereas I as a young hot blooded struting yoof got nada! Although I did end up marrying a fallen Madonna with big boobies!
Mary Tyler Moore joins the list aged 80. RIP
John Hurt has left us
Yep RIP John Hurt…sadly best known for having an Alien bursting out of his chest…he was much better actor than that.
