:pl: :chelseafc: Chelsea v Southampton :saints: (live on :tnt_sports:)

I mentioned to a colleague of easy money to be made by betting on Chelsea last night and I think he won a tenner after putting 100 down

This season is remarkable for the sheer apathy it’s producing among the Southampton faithful. I honestly can’t remember another like it.

Much like the apathy amongst the players.

I would start a Sotonians Apathy thread to discuss the issue but I can’t be bothered…

I think it has been coming for some time and IMHO was inevitable with the shift in the power following huge cash investments initially from SKY and subsequently the whole CL thing… and then billionaire ownership of a few clubs… Most fans under 40 wont remember a time the gap between the elite and everyone else was not that big and good coaching and good youth development could give many sides a decent chance… When your local side has a chance even if small it drives the passion that delivers the ā€˜saints til I die’ mentality, when the chance of ever winning anything beyond a promotion is zero or when local youth players are snapped up and gone before even a full season, then there comes a point when its a pleasant pass time to follow the local side when its fun… but plenty if other more enjoyable stuff to do if its miserable.

And any uberfan demand that we should stick with it through thick and thin is now nonsense… why? Why when a club is owned by people, not bad people, but folks with no real passion, by those who see it just as a business opportunity, should fans blindly follow no matter what?

The ā€˜game’ and the owners of the top flight clubs have become complacent, thinking that fans will always be there and TV revenues pay for their status… for the elite regular CL ā€˜franchises’ this may be true, but for everyone else, why bother following something that takes you for granted, costs a fortune to watch and serves up nothing but embarrassment. There is nothing to be proud about anymore… so we have a new reality in which most fans can take it or leave it. Sure we will enjoy and celebrate small victories, but don’t expect us all to be spending hard earned time or cash following a club that offers so little passion and fight from the Boardroom to the 1st team…

The future is here - in France.
TV money was half what they expected and is dropping even more as fans stop paying big subscription rates.

Reality is biting
