Is that a typo?
I occasionally dip into this thread just to remind myself how happy I am to be unemployable.
From what I’ve read I don’t think you have a monopoly on being unemployable.
However. I think I’m probably the only one who glories in his undeniable status.
My last boss offered me a pay rise if I would release him.
Psh. I don’t really care. I think you earn about £42k once qualified and in about 5 years you can realistically expect to be a manager on £50-60k or so.
I wasn’t lying when I said I’m not very money-driven. I’m actually a fairly minimalist and non-materialist guy. I just need to earn enough to move out and live indepedently really - just enough so that things like getting married and having a family aren’t out of reach because I don’t earn enough.
OK - passed the AC with Kingston Smith. Apparently I got 100% for the maths and 70% for the verbal (I think these are percentile scores though - there’s no way I got 100% of the maths questions right but I might well have got the highest score out of everyone else there).
Anyway. Just today they’ve sprung on me that they might be full for their offices in London and that they’re looking to fill their spaces for St. Albans. Bit of a piss-take because I can’t really do St. Albans but don’t want to outright threaten to withdraw over that. I still need to somehow look keen on the job whilst getting across that it really has to be London.
My guess is that they may be able to squeeze me into London if they want me enough, but want to try and push me towards St. Albans so that HR can say that they’ve done their job in terms of recruiting for spaces at all their offices.
Location-wise St. Albans is awful. Just out of commuting range for me here in Tooting (way too expensive travel) and fucking just as expensive as London if I were to rent there.
So, I’m going in for a final, partner interview on Thursday. I’ll heavily hint that I’d really much prefer one of their London locations (after all, that’s where I applied), but I’ll only really pull the trigger (and say that it’ll have to be London or I’ll have to turn down the offer) if I actually get an offer. The HR lady told me to speak to the partner in terms of availability and shit but I’d rather avoid the topic as best I can for the actual interview.
The thing that annoys me is that she wasn’t at all clear to me about what my actual choices were - but was obviously heavily trying to ‘sell’ St. Albans to me (telling me that it takes 25 minutes from London and they offer season ticket loans etc.etc.). This is making me cautiously optimistic that I can somehow wrangle a London offer *if* I get the offer.

Ultimately the corporate world wants conformity and shuns independence and quirks. Sucks, but what else you gonna do?
You will be an audit clerk and be sent all over the country. You will be lucky to see the inside of the London office once a week.
Changed your tune somewhat, if i remember rightly.
Demand a chauffeur. Not before 10am though, traffic is horrendous.
I like the fact you edited this posted but still come out of it looking like an arsehole.
Bit of advice for free Tramps - and considering those I work for charge/whore me out for a fortune, I’d maybe take a bit of it on board.
your posts don’t do you any favours because you are inflexible- to put it mildly. We are mostly older and dare I say it wiser fuckers in here who read your post about St Albans and those not doing a face palm are thinking tosser… why? Because if you get an offer for St Albans you take it and move close by and make it work … like every sensible person would … after a couple of years you either move on to something bigger when your experience gives you more options - or you have proven yourself in the burbs and get transferred - believing you are smart enough to try and manipulate a post in London will see you get told to fuck off - they don’t need to want you enough because there are equally smart people they are turning away who will jump at the offer… and it crosses the line from being smart to being arrogant tosser… the whole point of these entry schemes is you demonstrate your commitment by going where and when you are needed.
That is reality, right or wrong, but if you want to play the corporate whore (as I do) dont try and fuck over the pimp before you have even gotten your first punter…
It isn’t that I can’t work outside of London - its the fact that the rent in St. Albans is fucking expensive and I doubt I can find a place that quickly if it’s a January start. I don’t even know what the salary is in terms of personal budgeting!
I’d gladly move to Leeds or Manchester! I’d be equally fine with St. Albans in September - but relocating with a month’s notice is pretty challenging.
Exactly why I turned them down all those years ago.
Thank you kindly! The thought of you seething away behind your computer screen has given me a nice bit of comic relief!
Look, I’m all for hearing how you’re getting on, but I don’t need to hear about every fucking 10m swimming badge or how you do in a year 9 Maths test. Just where you are in the process is fine.

You can rent a room in a house on £21k or £42k.
Be fun to have 3 years of degree level exams to keep you from going out to save money though.
But I applied for the job in London - they’ve only just suddenly sprung this on me! One month seems a pretty short window to relocate - I don’t even know if I can find/afford a place in St. Albans quickly enough to move there!
Completely true!
