In my case, I am working at a law firm covering someone on Mat leave. Because they were so impressed with me in the first few months, I was put forward for a permanent position in another part of the firm, when my mat leaver returns. Several weeks of discussion / internal interview and I was told, in August: “The job is yours, start as soon as you can, but of course only when the mat leaver comes back.”
My mat leaver returns on 1 Dec. I pass this on to my “new boss” only to be told that they have decided to give the role to someone else internally, who can start earlier (it turns out that he started on Nov 7th). I have not been applying for roles elsewhere as I thought it was a good firm, with a good culture. Turns out that you cant even trust a lawyer now. Shafted.
Blurgh. That’s fucking rancid. I had a mate of mine who was similarly screwed over when given a verbal offer from TFL for their graduate scheme. They withdrew it as they (just that year) had changed their minimum academic requirements (he had been allowed to progress through the app. form/tests/interview/AC etc. right up to basically them offering him the job and HR didn’t realise that their new min. requirements applied as soon as they did).
I’m pretty close to securing a job teaching English in China for a year - pretty sick to death of everything that’s been mentioned in this thread already and think it’s time for a change again. The job market for people my age now is fucking infuriating, entry level jobs are a thing of the past and they’ve been replaced by unpaid internships or graduate schemes which are highly competitive. If you decide not to strive for higher pursuits and settle for a bog-standard admin job or whatever, you need a minimum of 2 years experience to even be considered - quite tough when there are so few attainable jobs out there to get that experience anyway.
Fuck that noise, i’m off to live in the Communist bubble. Peace.
Am probably going to end up in Shenzhen as well which is just across the pond from the Philippines, so i’ll give you a little wave!
Also Bucks, that is really fucking shit - sorry to hear that you got screwed over like that. Seems any kind of morality in business is a thing of the past now (although tbf I can’t quite place when it was a thing of the present either…)
Not all bad, one of my former students graduated this summer (Engineering) got on Barclays Grad scheme and is now earning 37K. Not bad for a 22 year old. I look forward to him buying me a pint when he’s next in my local.
Whenever I hear that someone from a large corporation has shit on someone, I cheer myself with the thought that they’ll either live an unhappy life or die quite soon.
What surprises me is that people bother getting on that ladder in the first place and then complain about being shat on. Or get on the ladder knowing that they will be expected to shit on people and then complain when it happens to them.
Live by the corporate sword, die by the corporate sword. Just don’t fucking moan about it.
Apparently my score for the numerical test ranked between the 90th and 99th percentile of all other applicants.
Still miles away from the job, but in terms of personal development this is massive for me. A couple of years ago I honestly just thought I ‘couldn’t do maths’ and didn’t even apply for jobs which had any form of maths testing in their application process - so I’m very pleased.
Go for it man. I had a couple of mates of mine who did more of less the same. I’d have been well up for it were it not for the fact that I essentially have a racist penis and wouldn’t find the women attractive at all. Apparently you get treated like a minor celebrity everywhere you go as well and its not uncommon to hear restaurants even serving foreigners on the house just to give the impression that they’re ‘upper class’ etc. You’ll have an epic time of it.

Was that as a tube driver?
Ha, if they hired through graduate schemes we’d both be all over it.
Popping in with a little update from the job apps that are still alive.
EY: Have done tests and got feedback form. On maths they rate you from 1-7 and I’m happy to report I managed to get a 7 in that so well pleased. However, they care very passionately about their culture, strengths and values and so on so whilst I think I did OK in those ‘what would you do/say’ tests, I can’t be 100% sure. Think I’m through to the next stage but will have to wait and see.
RSM: Have been told I’ve passed the video interview and am waiting to be put through to the next stage.
BDO: Through to video interview and waiting to hear when that will be.
Oddly enough, I’m about to diversify. Happened by accident. Some mush at work is doing a part-time degree and got in touch regarding a problem he was having. Ended up helping him for nowt, like, but it did dawn on me that there are shitloads of people looking to do what I do, and I’m not bad at doing it. I mentioned doing similar via the secondary route, but it ultimately fell apart because it’s too much of a life change for me to accommodate right now.
Tutoring though, is a different story. The missus actually works for a training firm and informs me that I can already run an apprenticeship course and do an on the job course at the same time, also getting DBS checked into the bargain. Main focus is going to be over 16s though. The quality of University education is _highly _variable. Many don’t teach their students code well, at all. My Uni prioritised research ability over lecturing quality, so there are opportunities to help undergraduates, not only during their course, but also in the all important transition from academic development to commercially focused stuff.
