The hypothetical lefties that could start filling reselected Tory seats could actually make the majority happy. I’ve been to enough lefty stuff to know that no leftie truly hates the EU. How can you? We benefit from all the contact and solidarity we have with people across the continent. Most lefties disapprove of the governing structures of the EU. That’s what we want to change.
I genuinely don’t think Corbyn was bullshitting when he said he wanted to remain and reform. Meaningful reform just isn’t on the table at the moment. It might be in the future, and although the Troika was able to squash a Greek leftist government, it’s not going to be as easy to do with us.
They need us more than we need them. I could bore you with dry, economic arguments, but I’d rather go for a cultural one. We’re the bridge to North America, we are connected to all our former colonies and we are the best place you can learn to speak the world’s most widely spoken language.
The leadership is floating mandatory reselection after the inevitable leadership challenge. If that happens, and the politics of the candidates are more to the left of those they replaced, they’re not going to be against the EU.
They’re going to be against the EU as-is.
