A colleague of mine used to continually refer to IE as Internet Exploder.

Personally, I prefer the aaaaaIE! variant.

They are all shite compared to apple, when I have the money I am getting a mac, not responding, updates, failed updates, unknown error will be a thing of the past so Bill Gates shove it up your hoop.

Having been required to use both PCs and Macs for the entirety of my working life, you may be in for a shock if you think that buying a Mac is akin to obtaining the silver bullet that puts computer usage woes to rest.

Seriously - for every one day-to-day problem they solve, there seems to be a corresponding obtuse piece of design, or head scratch-inducing hardware/software ‘feature’. My work one also bugs me with software updates. Every sodding day.

They boot quickly and allow for a solid workflow (for myself at least, in web design). Beyond that you’re little functionally poorer with a decent powerhouse PC (and probably a little financially richer to boot).

As for Windows 10, my laptop is on 8 so I’ll probably give it a spin. Would quite like to upgrade the work PC as it possibly needs an OS reinstall anyway, but they’re cautiously sticking to 7 for now. In a business environment that’s a sound call!

Like the story about the bloke who’s wife found out about his porn collection of pictures as windows 10, sets up a screen saver of all the pictures ever on your system… That was a nice surprise while having the family over for dinner!

Here it is. The story, not the collection!

I did my Win 10 update yesterday and so far I have seen nothing untoward. The UI is better IMHO and mayber easier to use. Metro gone, yay.

Most things the same as Win 7 and 8/8.1 but the little things, like the new icons, make it nicer

Did mine today…I think it took just over a couple of hours but I was out for just over an hour andit was complete when I returned.

Looks and runs fine. If you’re updating from 7 its just visually a bit different but nothing that needs any sort of learning curve.

I am now on Windows 10, scary as that is. Going to see if there is anything nicer on the eyes on the clear text settings. One area where Apple has knocked Windows out of the park for donkeys years is on-screen readability.

When you right click on the windows icon at bottom left, you get all the admin tools you need from the control panel. Was it always that way and I just never knew? Either way, I really love that!!

I have tried to update from Win 7. However, it has failed to update twice and rolled back to Win 7.

Have any of you any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

It gets about 80% through the update and then I just get a grey/black screen. It’s as if it has stalled. I then reboot by holding down the power button. When it reboots, it tries to start Win 10 but fails and the cycle of partially installing, hanging, rolling back to Win 7 continues.

I had a similar problem Sickness is in us all, which prompted my _heap of shit_ comment above.

I use a laptop in a docking station, and whilst the upgrade to 10 had started and rebooted, it failed to recognise my external monitor.

This meant that the upgrade process was asking for input using the laptop screen, but the laptop was shut so I couldn’t see it.

A pedant’s knowledge of exactly what can go wrong in operating system upgrades stopped me touching anything for about 4 hours.

Eventually I took the machine out of the docking station, realised what was going on and the upgrade proceeded without problem. That is UNTIL I then re-docked my machine. Windows 10 again failed to detect either the two monitors. It took me 4-5 hours to manually detect the monitors - something to do with incorrect video drivers I believe.

Perhaps your problem is related to Windows 10 not detecting multiple screens/monitors?

OK, rant over.

Kudos to MS on an amazing upgrade process that kept all of my apps and app settings. My printer, that doesn’t even have a driver for Windows 8 let alone Windows 10, is working (not sure how!). The response generally feels quicker. I’m getting used to the new menu and the Edge browser looks excellent too.

My Dell laptop said that it supports Windows 10, but some low-level drivers are not present and this means my battery life isn’t great. But I need a new battery so that might be related to that.

The only criticism, which given the poor reception Metro and Windows 8 had, now appears churlish, is that it’s all a bit similar to Windows 7.

I also have a glitch with my audio drivers on my laptop. That’s the only issue though. Yeah, it looks like a 7/8 hybrid, but seems to run better than both. I like it. I can reach everything I need easily from the left click or right click start menu. It’s all somehow a fair bit more accessible than 7 or 8. I quickly went back to Firefox over Edge, but that’s more down to me being a creature of habit, and liking the extensions I usually use.

That came in Windows 8.1 IIRC.

Look, even my missus hasn’t complained about using Windows 10 and she is the first to whinge if something changes and I don’t take her through it step by bleedinginly obviosu step so, yes, kudos to MS for once.

Ah, my only whinge, Silverlight (BT Spory, Sky Go) doesn’t work in Edge (yet!) so I have to use Firefox to watch BT Sport or Sky Go.

Chrome, correctly, blocked NPAPI calls ages ago so Silverlight hasn’t been allowed in Chrome for ages.

Isn’t it about time MS updated Sliverlight to HTML5 or something…

I’ve not had tons of time to play on it yet, but so far, so good. Apps seems just as, if not more responsive. I’ve been a long-term user of text-based launching; before 7 I used a third party app to do it. I haven’t actually seen the “square view” yet. For me, it’s just a working OS with a slightly different design aesthetic. I’m really not sure how I feel about all the squares and hard edges yet.

I’ve spent a bit more time with this new OS this evening. Now remember that I’ve jumped straight from 7 to 10. The girls all have 8 on their machines, but I’ve been a stickler, so I’m probably going to look like a yokel when I announce my delight at a feature that has been kicking around for ages. So far, I don’t really have a bad word to say about it. I like the way mail accounts are better integrated and that Microsoft, despite obviously wanting to get you onto its store, is finally being real about the availability of networked services from other providers. My Gmail was all set up nice and sharpish, and fully integrated into the OS.

I think tablets have a lot to do with my level of comfort. For years, tablets have essentially been little computers running a much more personal version of an OS. For me, Win 10 is just feeling like that, but on a computer, and not really hampering the “computery” things I need to do on it.

Upgraded last night. Very easy and probably only took an hour. Looks shiny enough and seems to act as a happy middle ground between W7 and W8.1.

Next step is a clean install.

I read all the bumpf about privacy and erosion of rights and some pertinent quotes from the 45 page ‘agreement’. I’ll wait until/if the EU/US lawmakers test the validity of this.

How easy is Linux to use for a non-tecchy and how do I get me an avatar? Looked on the Gravatar site and while it blathered, it didn’t say ‘click here’. Please note the avatar is for others’ purposes; I’m happy to be an invisible blob.
